This collections contains 35 key papers by James K. Mitchell during his extraordinary career as a geotechnical engineer.Ø In addition to teaching, Mitchell's career encompassed geotechnical projects ranging from research on hazardous waste landfill stability at Kettleman Hills in California, to lunar soil analysis for NASA Apollo Missions, to working with the Mayor of San Francisco following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Science. Topics include: experimental and analytic studies of soil behavior related to geotechnical and geo-environmental problems; soil improvement and ground reinforcement, physicochemical phenomena in soils, the stress-strain time behavior of soils, in situ measurement of soil properties, and mitigation of ground failure risk during earthquakes. ASCE's Engineering Classics series presents selected papers of lasting importance by eminent engineers who have made outstanding contributions to their field.

Book excerpt: In the last few years, many studies have focused on the behavior of unsaturated sands subjected to dynamic loading. Despite some achievements, much remains unclear about the behavior of unsaturated soil such as: (i) the behavior before and after the main shock and the effect of foreshocks on the liquefaction potential; (ii) the effect of the saturation degree on the CSR (cyclic stress ratio); (iii) in the case of dense soils, what is the effect of unsaturation on the CSR-number of cycles relationship to reach liquefaction? This research work tries to provide some answers to these questions. Two groups of tests were carried out by triaxial dynamic apparatus to survey the sand mechanical behavior when subjected to cyclic loading as well as the residual strength after liquefaction under monotonic loading. All the samples were prepared by the wet tamping method. The vacuum method was used to control the saturation degree of the samples. Then, the Skempton parameter B was used to evaluate the saturation degree of the samples. After that, sample consolidation and cyclic loading were conducted step by step. After that the samples was subjected to the cyclic loading to study the liquefaction and then the monotonic loading to study the residual strength. The results of cyclic loading process show that the liquefaction susceptibility is directly proportional to the sample saturation degree. The results of the monotonic loading show that the strength of sand recuperates when the pore water pressure dissipates after liquefaction.Besides, the experimental protocol established in this study has handled well the main challenges of the unsaturated soil liquefaction tests.

Book excerpt: In this study experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out with the emphasis on studying the behaviour and liquefaction state of typical silty sand sampled from the Mekelle area in Ethiopia under monotonic and cyclic undrained loadings. Experiments have been carried out to measure the pore pressure accumulation, deformation characteristics and related effective stress paths. A numerical model was then used to simulate the behaviour and liquefaction state associated with the changes in the stress-strain-pore pressure levels by means of the finite element method (FEM) using the FE code Tochnog (Tochnog Professional Company 2021).

This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquake-induced soil liquefaction (liquefaction) is a leading cause of earthquake damage worldwide. Liquefaction is often described in the literature as the phenomena of seismic generation of excess porewater pressures and consequent softening of granular soils. Many regions in the United States have been witness to liquefaction and its consequences, not just those in the west that people associate with earthquake hazards. Past damage and destruction caused by liquefaction underline the importance of accurate assessments of where liquefaction is likely and of what the consequences of liquefaction may be. Such assessments are needed to protect life and safety and to mitigate economic, environmental, and societal impacts of liquefaction in a cost-effective manner. Assessment methods exist, but methods to assess the potential for liquefaction triggering are more mature than are those to predict liquefaction consequences, and the earthquake engineering community wrestles with the differences among the various assessment methods for both liquefaction triggering and consequences. State of the Art and Practice in the Assessment of Earthquake-Induced Soil Liquefaction and Its Consequences evaluates these various methods, focusing on those developed within the past 20 years, and recommends strategies to minimize uncertainties in the short term and to develop improved methods to assess liquefaction and its consequences in the long term. This report represents a first attempt within the geotechnical earthquake engineering community to consider, in such a manner, the various methods to assess liquefaction consequences.
