Book excerpt: Few days in history have been as meticulously documented as Abraham Lincoln's last day. The bucket list was short. The day began as a peaceful spring day and Lincoln had put in motion a plan to have a joyous carriage ride with his wife, attend the theater, and spend the day enjoying his family. Gone was the melancholy that had engulfed the last few years. On this day, the President bounced out of bed, was jovial at breakfast, and uncharacteristically fussed over his appearance. He was usually unkempt and miserable, but had a special reason to appear dapper on this day. On their carriage ride there is about an hour where the Lincolns are unaccounted for. Mary Lincoln claims they went toward The Soldier's Home-historians disagree with her, but do not offer much of an alternative. Many historical accounts of Lincoln's last carriage ride contradict the very eyewitness accounts they source. Everyone knows the events of that night, and hopefully my photograph fills in the afternoon of Lincoln's last day.

This frontiersman-turned-chief executive was a simple man with large goals, who was savvy enough to recognize the power of the new invention of photography, and was willing to use it to shape his image and create an historic legacy. More than one hundred images of Lincoln's life and times provide a complete portrait of our most revered president, and the events that defined him. From the only confirmed existing picture of Lincoln before the historic Gettysburg Address to his second inauguration-where he is unknowingly surrounded by John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators-to the execution of his murderers, this eye-opening, inspiring visual journey provides a fresh take on one of the most documented and beloved figures in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE LINCOLN BRIGADE The day after Christmas in 1936, a group of ninety-six Americans sailed from New York to help Spain defend its democratic government against fascism. Ultimately, twenty-eight hundred United States volunteers reached Spain to become the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Few Lincolns had any military training. More than half were seriously wounded or died in battle. Most Lincolns were activists and idealists who had worked with and demonstrated for the homeless and unemployed during the Great Depression. They were poets and blue-collar workers, professors and students, seamen and journalists, lawyers and painters, Christians and Jews, blacks and whites. The Brigade was the first fully integrated United States army, and Oliver Law, an African American from Texas, was an early Lincoln commander. William Loren Katz and the late Marc Crawford twice traveled with the Brigade to Spain in the 1980s, interviewed surviving Lincolns on old battlefields, and obtained never-before-published documents and photographs for this book.

Book excerpt: From the author of the forthcoming Building the Great Society (February 2018), an intimate look into Lincoln’s White House and the aftermath of his death, via the lives of his two closest aides In this timely look into Abraham Lincoln’s White House, and the aftermath of his death, noted historian and political advisor Joshua Zeitz presents a fresh perspective on the sixteenth U.S. president—as seen through the eyes of Lincoln’s two closest aides and confidants, John Hay and John Nicolay. Lincoln’s official secretaries, Hay and Nicolay enjoyed more access, witnessed more history, and knew Lincoln better than anyone outside of the president’s immediate family. They were the gatekeepers of Lincoln’s legacy. Drawing on letters, diaries, and memoirs, Lincoln’s Boys is part political drama and part coming-of-age tale—a fascinating story of friendship, politics, war, and the contest over history and remembrance.
