Book excerpt: No religious text has influenced the world more than has the New Testament's Sermon on the Mount, and yet this crucial text still begs to be more clearly understood. Why was it written? What unifying theme or purpose holds it all together? Should it be called a sermon? Or is it some other kind of composition? How would its earliest listeners have heard its encoded allusions and systematic program? This book offers new insights into the Sermon on the Mount by seeing it in the shadow of the all-pervasive Temple in Jerusalem, which dominated the religious landscape of the world of Jesus and his earliest disciples. Analyzing Matthew 5-7 in light of biblical and Jewish backgrounds, ritual studies, and oral performances in early Christian worship, this reading coherently integrates every line in the Sermon. It positions the Sermon as the premier Christian mystery.

Welch's book The Sermon at the Temple and the Sermon on the Mount presented a thorough Latter-day Saint interpretation of the Savior's greatest sermon, drawing on insights from Jesus's Sermon at the Temple in 3 Nephi to shed light on his Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple and Sermon on the Mount builds on that earlier study with substantial additions based on insights gleaned throughout a decade of continuing research. The basic analysis remains unchanged: understanding the Sermon (meaning both texts in their shared, collective meaning) as a temple text reveals that it has far more power and unity than a mere collection of miscellaneous sayings of Jesus.

Book excerpt: The 'temple action' of Jesus, popularly known as 'temple cleansing, ' has been subjected to meticulous studies. Nevertheless, studies focussing on the Johannine version of the 'temple action' are surprisingly very few. The present work concentrates on the Johannine 'temple action' (Jn 2,13-22). The unique contribution of this book is that it has ventured to situate the 'temple action' of Jesus in contexts which have hitherto not been adequately considered in this respect. These significant contexts include the Pre-70 C. E. Jewish hopes concerning the eschatological temple and the Post-70 C.E. private, apocalyptic, rabbinic and political responses to the destruction of the Jerusalem temple. By placing the 'temple action' in the aforesaid contexts, and also in the context of the synoptic versions of the 'temple action, ' this study clarifies why John presents Jesus as the temple, and what it means to say that Jesus' body is the temple. These contexts, besides throwing light to the 'temple action' of Jesus, also turn to be a powerful key to unravel the subtle nuances of much of the Johannine materia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the freshness of a memoir, author and yoga teacher Christina Sell draws upon her first visit to an extraordinary temple in southern India to present basic principles of yoga. Beyond the ordinary aims of yoga as a means of stretching and strengthening, or even for being happier or more centered, My Body is a Temple is an instruction manual for dedicating oneself to a life of the spirit, in and through the vehicle of the human body. The body as a temple is a common metaphor within many spiritual traditions. In this book, Christina Sell delves into the “how” and “why” of this widely accepted comparison. My Body Is a Temple will encourage readers to listen to and honor the body; and to enter more fully into their everyday lives to see that each activity contains a Divine blueprint for success. It will help any yoga student to reclaim the raw materials and energy, always already present, to build his or her body as a temple-to provide refuge and sanctuary for themselves and inspiration for others. While the author’s tradition is that of Anusara Yoga, a strongly heart-centered approach, the book is written for any hatha yoga aspirant or practitioner. Her commitment is to traditional yogic practices and ideals, without being rigid. My Body Is a Temple is a vital and realistic treatment about the process of human change and transformation. Beyond Fitness ... Yoga is a Means of Self-Honoring and Spiritual Transformation This book will be well-used by both students and teachers of yoga. It should be included in all yoga and fitness centers and in popular library collections.

Book excerpt: Margaret Barker believes that Christianity developed so quickly because it was a return to far older faith—far older than the Greek culture that is long-held to have influenced Christianity. Temple Theology explains that the preaching of the gospel and the early Christian faith grew out of the centuries' old Hebrew longing for God's original Temple.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temple Emanu-El, the first Jewish congregation in North Texas, has played a historic role in the growth of Dallas. Founded in 1875, the temple evolved from the Hebrew Benevolent Association, organized in 1872 by eleven men who established a cemetery and held the first Jewish services. This initial gathering of pioneer Jews occurred just two weeks before the arrival of the first train--the indispensable catalyst for Dallas' development into a bustling commercial center. Arguably, Temple Emanu-El owes its ascendancy to the auspicious designation of Dallas as a railroad crossroads. Jews, like other enterprising newcomers, were drawn to the railroad boom town and became part of the westward sweep of trade and emigration to Dallas. These early settlers participated in every aspect of civic growth and responsibility. They invested their life savings in stores on the courthouse square, manned the volunteer fire department, and ran for public office. Like Alexander Sanger, who opened the Dallas branch of Sanger Bros. in 1872 and was elected city alderman the next year, Jews quickly identified with the progressive "Dallas spirit." While retaining the basic principles of their ancestral faith, Temple Emanu-El's Reform Jews adapted their religious practices to conform to the secular demands of life in America. With confidence in the city's promise of progress, congregants actively promoted Dallas' business, civic, and cultural development. Each succeeding generation of temple families produced important leaders whose contribution to the advancement and enrichment of both the temple and the city shaped both. The temple's rabbis addressed controversial issues--Dr. David Lefkowitz denounced the Ku Klux Klan in the early 1920s and Levi A. Olan preached to the troubled city after President Kennedy's assassination in 1963. Gerry Cristol has set this absorbing story against the history of both Dallas and American Judaism. Temple Emanu-El's story affirms a unique but nonetheless eloquent tribute to the American experience, and in A Light in the Prairie, significant social history becomes fascinating reading.
