Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Buddha I have done my best to expose both the theoretical and practical doctrines of Buddha, all in all according to the authorized Chinese Text. I should have published the classification of Buddha's Personality, ' had it not been too voluminous and so complicated for this small book. It may not be altogether useless for those readers who can read the Japanese original as well as the English translation to state here that the translators have given a few small turns and contractions to my original, with out missing the spirit of the original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Asia: Being the Life and Teachings of Gautama, Prince of India and Founder of Buddhism In the following Poem I have sought, by the medium of an imaginary Buddhist votary, to depict the life and character and indicate the philosophy of that noble hero and reformer, Prince Gautama of India, the founder of Buddhism. A generation ago little or nothing was known in Europe of this great faith of Asia, which had nevertheless existed during twenty-four centuries, and at this day surpasses, in the number of its followers and the area of its prevalence, any other form of creed. Four hundred and seventy millions of our race live and die in the tenets of Gautama; and the spiritual dominions of this ancient teacher extend, at the present time, from Nepaul and Ceylon over the whole Eastern Peninsula to China, Japan, Thibet, Central Asia, Siberia, and even Swedish Lapland. India itself might fairly be included in this magnificent empire of belief, for though the profession of Buddhism has for the most part passed away from the land of its birth, the mark of Gautama's sublime teaching is stamped ineffaceably upon modern Brahmanism, and the most characteristic habits and convictions of the Hindus are clearly due to the benign influence of Buddha's precepts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buddha And what is this Buddha From the earliest age the allegorical poetry of the Indians, like that of the Greeks and the Germans, treats of the destinies of the sun hero: of his birth from the morning-cloud, which, as soon as it has given him' being, must itself vanish before the rays of its illuminating child; of his battle with and victory over the dark demon of the thunder cloud; how he then marches triumphantly across the firmament, until at last the day declines and the light hero succumbs to darkness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Asia and the Light of the World: A Comparison of the Legend, the Doctrine,& the Ethics of the Buddha, With the Story, the Doctrine,& the Ethics of Christ There is reason to believe that a large class even of Christian people have a most exaggerated idea Of the excellence of the great non-christian religions, and the extent to which their teachings agree with those of the Gospel Of Christ. This remark applies with special force at present to the case Of Buddhism, in which, for various reasons, very many intelligent people, of every variety of religious Opinion, have of late years come to feel a very special interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of the Buddha The object of this little book is to give the reader a succinct account of an Eastern sage whose doctrine of the Path has been accepted by millions of the human race, and whose influ ence is still felt at the ends of the earth. What is generally understood by Buddhism will be found to differ greatly from the way of emancipation here set forth. And for this reason Unlike all other religions, Buddhism began with out God and without prayer, and ended in be coming a most elaborate system of polytheism with a superstitious multiplication of collects. Up to the time of Asoka, about 250 b.o., it seems to have remained comparatively pure; but by the thirteenth century a.d., when the revival of Brahmanism drove it from India, it had assumed in other countries so many new features as to be hardly recognisable. Nor should this be a matter for great surprise. When an essentially Aryan religion or system of philosophy is transplanted to Turanian lands it is not to be expected that it will remain unchanged. The contrast between the teaching of the Christ and of His apostles, and the Christianity of Rome in the Middle Ages is indeed great, but the difference between the Buddhism of Tibet and the Dharma of Sakya Muni 1s greater still. The history of the faith In all the lands m which it has taken root is far too vast a subject for our present purpose, but a general outline of its rise and fall in Aryavarta. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed of Buddha That the problem has not yet been even ap proximately solved is my sincere conviction. I have read many treatises on Buddhism; but I have yet to find the writer who, when expounding the philosophy (as distinguished from the ethical system) of Buddha, teaches as one having au thority and not as the Scribes. The indisputable fact that Buddha himself kept silence with regard to the ultimate realities and ultimate issues of life, shows that the task of interpreting his creed is one for criticism (in the widest and deepest sense of the word) rather than for scholarship.
