Book excerpt: This paper concerns the relation between the Lifted Root Number Conjecture, as introduced in [GRW2], and a new equivariant form of Iwasawa theory. A main conjecture of equivariant Iwasawa theory is formulated, and its equivalence to the Lifted Root Number Conjecture is shown subject to the validity of a semi-local version of the Root Number Conjecture, which itself is proved in the case of a tame extension of real abelian fields.

Book excerpt: The algebraic techniques developed by Kakde will almost certainly lead eventually to major progress in the study of congruences between automorphic forms and the main conjectures of non-commutative Iwasawa theory for many motives. Non-commutative Iwasawa theory has emerged dramatically over the last decade, culminating in the recent proof of the non-commutative main conjecture for the Tate motive over a totally real p-adic Lie extension of a number field, independently by Ritter and Weiss on the one hand, and Kakde on the other. The initial ideas for giving a precise formulation of the non-commutative main conjecture were discovered by Venjakob, and were then systematically developed in the subsequent papers by Coates-Fukaya-Kato-Sujatha-Venjakob and Fukaya-Kato. There was also parallel related work in this direction by Burns and Flach on the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. Subsequently, Kato discovered an important idea for studying the K_1 groups of non-abelian Iwasawa algebras in terms of the K_1 groups of the abelian quotients of these Iwasawa algebras. Kakde's proof is a beautiful development of these ideas of Kato, combined with an idea of Burns, and essentially reduces the study of the non-abelian main conjectures to abelian ones. The approach of Ritter and Weiss is more classical, and partly inspired by techniques of Frohlich and Taylor. Since many of the ideas in this book should eventually be applicable to other motives, one of its major aims is to provide a self-contained exposition of some of the main general themes underlying these developments. The present volume will be a valuable resource for researchers working in both Iwasawa theory and the theory of automorphic forms.

Since then, these conjectures and their generalizations have been actively investigated. This has led to significant progress in algebraic number theory. The current volume, based on the conference held at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD), represents the state-of-the-art research in this area. The first four survey papers provide an introduction to a majority of the recent work related to Stark's conjectures. The remaining six contributions touch on some major themes currently under exploration in the area, such as non-abelian and $p$-adic aspects of the conjectures, abelian refinements, etc. Among others, some important contributors to the volume include Harold M. Stark, John Tate, and Barry Mazur. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in number theory.

Book excerpt: A formula for the odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of a finite H-space in terms of its K-theory and Adams operations has been obtained by Bousfield. This work applies this theorem to give explicit determinations of the v1-periodic homotopy groups of (E8,5) and (E8,3), thus completing the determination of all odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of all compact simple Lie groups, a project suggested by Mimura in 1989. The method is different to that used by the author in previous works. There is no homotopy theoretic input, and no spectral sequence calculation. The input is the second exterior power operation in the representation ring of E8, which we determine using specialized software. This can be interpreted as giving the Adams operation psi^2 in K(E8). Eigenvectors of psi^2 must also be eigenvectors of psi^k for any k. The matrix of these eigenvectors is the key to the analysis. Its determinant is closely related to the homotopy decomposition of E8 localized at each prime. By taking careful combinations of eigenvectors, a set of generators of K(E8) can be obtained on which there is a nice formula for all Adams operations. Bousfield's theorem (and considerable Maple computation) allows the v1-periodic homotopy groups to be obtained from this.

Book excerpt: We deal with a map $\alpha$ from a finite group $G$ into the automorphism group $Aut({\mathcal L})$ of a factor ${\mathcal L}$ satisfying: $G=N \rtimes H$ is a semi-direct product, the induced map $g \in G \to [\alpha_g] \in Out({\mathcal L})=Aut({\mathcal L})/Int({\mathcal L})$ is an injective homomorphism, and the restrictions $\alpha\!\!\mid_N,\alpha\!\!\mid_H$ are genuine actions of the subgroups on the factor ${\mathcal L}$. The pair ${\mathcal M}={\mathcal L} \rtimes_{\alpha} H \supseteq {\mathcal N}={\mathcal L}^{\alpha\mid_N}$ (of the crossed product ${\mathcal L} \rtimes_{\alpha} H$ and the fixed-point algebra ${\mathcal L}^{\alpha\mid_N}$) gives us an irreducible inclusion of factors with Jones index $\ No. G$. The inclusion ${\mathcal M} \supseteq {\mathcal N}$ is of depth $2$ and hence known to correspond to a Kac algebra of dimension $\ No. G$.A Kac algebra arising in this way is investigated in detail, and in fact the relevant multiplicative unitary (satisfying the pentagon equation) is described. We introduce and analyze a certain cohomology group (denoted by $H^2((N,H),{\mathbf T})$) providing complete information on the Kac algebra structure, and we construct an abundance of non-trivial examples by making use of various cocycles. The operator algebraic meaning of this cohomology group is clarified, and some related topics are also discussed. Sector technique enables us to establish structure results for Kac algebras with certain prescribed underlying algebra structure. They guarantee that 'most' Kac algebras of low dimension (say less than $60$) actually arise from inclusions of the form ${\mathcal L} \rtimes_{\alpha} H \supseteq {\mathcal L}^{\alpha\mid_N}$, and consequently their classification can be carried out by determining $H^2((N,H),{\mathbf T})$. Among other things we indeed classify Kac algebras of dimension $16$ and $24$, which (together with previously known results) gives rise to the complete classification of Kac algebras of dimension up to $31$. Partly to simplify classification procedure and hopefully for its own sake, we also study 'group extensions' of general (finite-dimensional) Kac algebras with some discussions on related topics.

Book excerpt: This volume began as the last part of a one-term graduate course given at the Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences in the Autumn of 1993. The course was one of four associated with the 1993-94 Fields Institute programme, which I helped to organise, entitled "Artin L-functions". Published as [132]' the final chapter of the course introduced a manner in which to construct class-group valued invariants from Galois actions on the algebraic K-groups, in dimensions two and three, of number rings. These invariants were inspired by the analogous Chin burg invariants of [34], which correspond to dimensions zero and one. The classical Chinburg invariants measure the Galois structure of classical objects such as units in rings of algebraic integers. However, at the "Galois Module Structure" workshop in February 1994, discussions about my invariant (0,1 (L/ K, 3) in the notation of Chapter 5) after my lecture revealed that a number of other higher-dimensional co homological and motivic invariants of a similar nature were beginning to surface in the work of several authors. Encouraged by this trend and convinced that K-theory is the archetypical motivic cohomology theory, I gratefully took the opportunity of collaboration on computing and generalizing these K-theoretic invariants. These generalizations took several forms - local and global, for example - as I followed part of number theory and the prevalent trends in the "Galois Module Structure" arithmetic geometry.

Many symmetric monoidal model categories of spectra whose homotopy categories are equivalent to the stable homotopy category are now known, whereas no such categories were known before 1993. The most well-known examples are the category of $S$-modules and the category of symmetric spectra. We focus on the category of orthogonal spectra, which enjoys some of the best features of $S$-modules and symmetric spectra and which is particularly well-suited to equivariant generalization. We first complete the nonequivariant theory by comparing orthogonal spectra to $S$-modules. We then develop the equivariant theory. For a compact Lie group $G$, we construct a symmetric monoidal model category of orthogonal $G$-spectra whose homotopy category is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category of $G$-spectra. We also complete the theory of $S_G$-modules and compare the categories of orthogonal $G$-spectra and $S_G$-modules. A key feature is the analysis of change of universe, change of group, fixed point, and orbit functors in these two highly structured categories for the study of equivariant stable homotopy theory.

Book excerpt: Intersection homology theory provides a way to obtain generalized Poincare duality, as well as a signature and characteristic classes, for singular spaces. For this to work, one has had to assume however that the space satisfies the so-called Witt condition. We extend this approach to constructing invariants to spaces more general than Witt spaces. We present an algebraic framework for extending generalized Poincare duality and intersection homology to singular spaces $X$ not necessarily Witt. The initial step in this program is to define the category $SD(X)$ of complexes of sheaves suitable for studying intersection homology type invariants on non-Witt spaces. The objects in this category can be shown to be the closest possible self-dual 'approximation' to intersection homology sheaves. It is therefore desirable to understand the structure of such self-dual sheaves and to isolate the minimal data necessary to construct them. As the main tool in this analysis we introduce the notion of a Lagrangian structure (related to the familiar notion of Lagrangian submodules for $(-1)^k$-Hermitian forms, as in surgery theory). We demonstrate that every complex in $SD(X)$ has naturally associated Lagrangian structures and conversely, that Lagrangian structures serve as the natural building blocks for objects in $SD(X).Our main result asserts that there is in fact an equivalence of categories between $SD(X)$ and a twisted product of categories of Lagrangian structures. This may be viewed as a Postnikov system for $SD(X)$ whose fibers are categories of Lagrangian structures. The question arises as to which varieties possess Lagrangian structures. To begin to answer that, we define the model-class of varieties with an ordered resolution and use block bundles to describe the geometry of such spaces. Our main result concerning these is that they have associated preferred Lagrangian structures, and hence self-dual generalized intersection homology sheaves.

Book excerpt: The property of maximal $L_p$-regularity for parabolic evolution equations is investigated via the concept of $\mathcal R$-sectorial operators and operator-valued Fourier multipliers. As application, we consider the $L_q$-realization of an elliptic boundary value problem of order $2m$ with operator-valued coefficients subject to general boundary conditions. We show that there is maximal $L_p$-$L_q$-regularity for the solution of the associated Cauchy problem provided the top order coefficients are bounded and uniformly continuous.
