But the reader should please bear in mind that all but the last two dozen pages of the book were written and published while Tolstoy was still alive. With reference to the statement of his religious views he wrote to me: 'I have just read your presentation of my religious views, and have found it quite good. Here and there I have pencilled remarks on it. It is for you to decide whether you agree with them and accept them.' They were all adopted. 'For my own part, I repeat that the presentation of the whole is very good, and I heartily thank you for it.' That the events of his life as set forth in this volume are accurate, is guaranteed by the fact that his wife, the Countess S. A. Tolstoy, most kindly rendered me the very valuable assistance of reading and correcting it, chapter by chapter. The material collected in the Russian edition of Birukof's Biography of Tolstoy (which as yet reaches only to the year 1884) was of great use to me in writing this book. On several important matters our conclusions differ, but that in no way diminishes my obligation to him. Of the other numerous sources from which I have drawn, acknowledgment is made at the end of each chapter. It would seem therefore that an English Life of Tolstoy is needed, and having lived in Russia for twenty three years, known Tolstoy well for several years, visited him frequently in Moscow, and stayed with him repeatedly at Yasnaya Polyana, I am perhaps as well qualified as any one to write it, especially as I have long made a careful study of his views. My wife and I have translated several of his works, have known people closely connected with him, and some ten years ago we took part in an unsuccessful 'tolstoy' Colony; besides which 1 went to Canada at his wish to make arrangements for the Doukhobor migration, of which I subsequently wrote the history. Moreover, I am impartial. That is to say, I have taken pains to understand Tolstoy's views, and to see the good there is in them but being a Westerner, I see'also certain things Tolstoy overlooks, and I know that these things knock big holes in some of his most cherished 'principles.' Bedridden for over two months, Tolstoy began writing a meditation on death and dying that soon developed into a philosophical treatise on life, death, love, and the overcoming of pessimism. Although begun as an account of how one man encounters and laments his death and makes this death his own, the final work, On Life, describes the optimal life in which we can all be happy despite our mortality.
