Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Tolstoy: Later Years In this edition I have made a few slight alterations in the text, and have added an account of Tolstoy's last illness and death. But the reader should please bear in mind that all but the last two dozen pages of the book were written and published while Tolstoy was still alive. With reference to the statement of his religious views he wrote to me: 'I have just read your presentation of my religious views, and have found it quite good. Here and there I have pencilled remarks on it. It is for you to decide whether you agree with them and accept them.' They were all adopted. 'For my own part, I repeat that the presentation of the whole is very good, and I heartily thank you for it.' That the events of his life as set forth in this volume are accurate, is guaranteed by the fact that his wife, the Countess S. A. Tolstoy, most kindly rendered me the very valuable assistance of reading and correcting it, chapter by chapter. The material collected in the Russian edition of Birukof's Biography of Tolstoy (which as yet reaches only to the year 1884) was of great use to me in writing this book. On several important matters our conclusions differ, but that in no way diminishes my obligation to him. Of the other numerous sources from which I have drawn, acknowledgment is made at the end of each chapter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Tolstoy The events following his leaving Yasnaya Polyana, and his illness at Astapovo, only increased the deep public interest. His death came as the inevitable epilogue of an act for the continua tion of which his strength was not sufficient. It was a majestic conclusion to a great life, which had been one incessant struggle for truth, reason, and love. This short biographical sketch is an attempt to give the reader a simple enumeration of the chief events of Tolstoy's wonderful life, and an indication of the inner, spiritual development of his great soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Tolstoy: First Fifty Years The reason I have written this work is because so many among us are interested in Tolstoy and so few seem to under stand him. It would seem therefore that an English Life of Tolstoy is needed, and having lived in Russia for twenty three years, known Tolstoy well for several years, visited him frequently in Moscow, and stayed with him repeatedly at Yasnaya Polyana, I am perhaps as well qualified as any one to write it, especially as I have long made a careful study of his views. My wife and I have translated several of his works, have known people closely connected with him, and some ten years ago we took part in an unsuccessful 'tolstoy' Colony; besides which 1 went to Canada at his wish to make arrangements for the Doukhobor migration, of which I subsequently wrote the history. Moreover, I am impartial. That is to say, I have taken pains to understand Tolstoy's views, and to see the good there is in them but being a Westerner, I see'also certain things Tolstoy overlooks, and I know that these things knock big holes in some of his most cherished 'principles.' Book excerpt: This biography of the brilliant author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina “should become the first resort for everyone drawn to its titanic subject” (Booklist, starred review). In November 1910, Count Lev Tolstoy died at a remote Russian railway station. At the time of his death, he was the most famous man in Russia, more revered than the tsar, with a growing international following. Born into an aristocratic family, Tolstoy spent his existence rebelling against not only conventional ideas about literature and art but also traditional education, family life, organized religion, and the state. In “an epic biography that does justice to an epic figure,” Rosamund Bartlett draws extensively on key Russian sources, including fascinating material that has only become available since the collapse of the Soviet Union (Library Journal, starred review). She sheds light on Tolstoy’s remarkable journey from callow youth to writer to prophet; discusses his troubled relationship with his wife, Sonya; and vividly evokes the Russian landscapes Tolstoy so loved and the turbulent times in which he lived.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tolstoy The purpose of this book is to give a connected view of Tolstoy's many-sided literary work, with such facts as to his life as may serve to shed light on that Work and on the personality of the man who produced it. The book does not attempt to chronicle in detail the events of Tolstoy's life, or to furnish information as to each of his minor bits of writing; it avoids digressions on the mem bers of his family and other persons associated with him. Tolstoi One word must be added as to the spelling of Tolstoi's name. It is absolutely a triviality of transliteration whether it be spelled with a final or y. Unquestionably the author himself in signing his letters in French or English spelled it Leo Tolstoy. Is it necessary to con form to his spelling of it when it goes against the ratified recommendation of the Society of Librarians? The dieresis corresponds fairly well to the i s kratkot' of the Russian letter. It is the way it was first spelled both in French and in English. It is such a small matter that it seems hardly worth while to mention it. But the ques tion has been raised, and it is well to let the world know that the spelling with i is perfectly correct and has the weight of scientific authority behind it. In the book all Russian words and proper names, unless otherwise indicated, are pronounced with the accent on the penult. Dates are invariably given in new style, the old style be ing twelve days in the nineteenth century and thirteen days in this century behind the calendar of civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Days of Tolstoy Some Of us in Great Britain feel that the time has come when it is highly desirable that we should hear the story of the tragedy which beset the last years of Leo Tolstoy's life, from one who was in its scene. We can understand and respect your reticence up to this point. But now so many rumours, derogatory to Tolstoy, and therefore likely to diminish the weight of his teaching, are spreading over the world, and seem to be the subject Of a very active propaganda even in this country. Compare the environment of his childhood with that Of the southern states of America about the same time, and you realise how badly Russia has been injured by the success Of the Tsars in repressing all independence and originality in the small noble class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diaries of Leo Tolstoy: Youth, 1847 to 1852 When the records oi a great man's life are in question it is not so much the culmination - a matter of common knowledge - which interests one, but rather the first steps, the early indications of what he was eventually to prove himself. Of Tolstoy's Diaries, of which only a portion relating to his latter years has hitherto been published, it may be said that the good wine has been kept till now. The vintage Of Tolstoy's youth holds in a rare degree the essence of his matured philosophy. The Diaries, of which the first pages were written in 1846, were, from the beginning, Diaries of thoughts rather than of actions. They express many of the ideas which he was afterwards to expand in his polemical works, and they owe their vital quality not only to intimate, self-revealing touches, but because they voice the cry of Youth in all' climes and ages - Youth which is ever in spiritual conflict between the external laws of life and the needs of the inner being. It was a subject upon which Tolstoy wrote and pondered much in the course of his long life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1886, shortly before his fifty-eighth birthday, Leo Tolstoy was seriously injured while working in the fields of his estate. Bedridden for over two months, Tolstoy began writing a meditation on death and dying that soon developed into a philosophical treatise on life, death, love, and the overcoming of pessimism. Although begun as an account of how one man encounters and laments his death and makes this death his own, the final work, On Life, describes the optimal life in which we can all be happy despite our mortality. After its completion, On Life was suppressed by the tsars, attacked by the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church, and then censored by the Stalinist regime. This critical edition is the first accurate translation of this unsung classic of Russian thought into English, based on a study of manuscript pages of Tolstoy's drafts, and the first scholarly edition of this work in any language. It includes a detailed introduction and annotations, as well as historical material, such as early drafts, documents related to the presentation of an early version at the Moscow Psychological Society, and responses to the work by philosophers, religious leaders, journalists, and ordinary readers of Tolstoy's day.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Demands of Love and Reason: From Recent Published and Unpublished Writings of Leo Tolstoy One would think no kind of life could be better. But, nevertheless, this life will be hell, or will become hell, if these people are not hypocrites and do not lie, i.s., if they are really sincere. If these people have renounced the advantages and pleasures of life which town and money gave them, they have done so only because they acknowledge all men to be brothers equals before their Father. Not equals in ability, or, perhaps, in worth; but equals in their right to life, and to all that life can give.
