Book excerpt: Stuart brings his story to the present time in his final book of this trilogy a time when little girls wore dresses and hats to church, the United States was experiencing growing pains of its own and history, culture, and technology were evolving into what would become present-day America. Beginning in 1957, this book chronicles Stuart's life as he, along with several thousand other officers, were RIFed. He then enlisted as a sergeant and began a new life at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. During this time, he would have a 14 months unaccompanied tour to Korea. Returning to Fort Bliss, he would eventually retire as a Lieutenant Colonel in El Paso and enter the civilian world to become a successful commercial realtor. El Paso remains his home to this day. As son, husband, father, grandfather, and now great-grandfather, he looks back at the shaping of his own life and the tumultuous times in which he has lived. His keen insight and observations of this historical period provide an intimate glimpse of the world as it has changed and evolved throughout the past several decades.

Book excerpt: As you read the stories in Bridge Builders: Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things, you will enjoy the company of 12 humorous, uplifting and energizing women. You will find wonderful portrayals of the heart, mind and soul of faith and come to appreciate these aspects of yourself. Elaine Voci gives us the 12 stories of women who have had life-changing experiences plus her own story during the year it took to complete the book. Whether facing terminal illnesses, the loss of a hard-won career or the pursuit of a dream that seems unreachable, these women found a source of faith and courage within themselves that they did not always trust or believe they had. Each called upon inner resources, friendships with other women, scriptural passages and other inspiring words to not only endure, but to conquer fear and grow stronger. You will find part of your own story reflected in these life journeys, lessons and inspiration expertly gathered from the words of 12 heroic women by Elaine Voci, an outstanding new voice in non-fiction. He recounts the trials and tribulations of being part owner of a hardware store, commanding an infantry battalion (reserve), and attending various Army Schools. After meeting and marrying his wife, he was called to active duty as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College. At the end of the Korean War he was in Korea, in Civil Affairs, with the 7 Infantry Division and later with KACC (Koreas Civil Assistance Command) a United Nations Unit, whose mission it was to help in the rehabilitation of Korea which was devastated by the war, Stuart includes many pictures and documents of this era. This is a detailed, accurate, real life account of what really took place in Korea. Then he was assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served as the Post 0-2, a battalion commander and as a regimental executive officer. Each one of Stuart's books is a detailed, accurate, interesting account of his life, the times he lived in, and his beliefs and concerns. This autobiographical series is certain to become a treasured part of American history.

Book excerpt: Read the Foreword Clarion book review of The Life of Stuart O. Van Slyke. In this autobiography compiled from old diaries and letters, Stuart O. Van Slyke recounts his adventures as a young man born to hardship in the early 20th century. He recalls how he overcame his background through his own grit, imagination, and the support of his family and friends. From a 21st century point of view, Stuart's unsupervised childhood seems carefree. Virtually on his own from the beginning, Stuart worked his way through college, where he was introduced to the Army through ROTC, and was the first of his family to graduate. He was called to active duty on June 30, 1941, as a second lieutenant, but his true military career started on Pearl Harbor day. This turned out to a pivotal event in the shaping of his life. One of the highlights of the book is his service in the North African Campaign and his passionate yet sensitive command of the 78th Fighter Control Squadron, and later on the staff of the Allied Air Command of Corsica. The war's ending found him in Korea in military government in 1945, where he assisted in the start of South Korea's return to the community of countries who were no longer enslaved or ruled by despots. He had a real bird's eye view of the development of the 38th Parallel dilemma that plagues us even today. At the age of 29 in 1946, he was a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves, and a civilian again, who wondered what he was now going to do.
