Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of St. Simon Stock When the whole nation was laid under Interdict, as happened in the year 1208, the faithful, no matter how free from all culpa bility, were sure to feel the direful effects of the ecclesiastical ban. Local Interdicts, of rather frequent occurrence, brought the selfsame inconveniences to all who came within the sphere of the ecclesiastical sen tence The scandalous and irreligious con duct of King and Noble that called forth those Spiritual penalties was ill example to the great body of the people. In addition to the deprivation of the ordinary Spiritual helps for the people there was a partisan animosity begotten in the minds of many by those recurring contests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 2 The long delay which has ensued between the publication of this volume and that of its predecessor, has not been owing to any abandonment of the design of the complete work, but mainly to an attempt to make the translation of the Letters of St. Teresa as perfect as possible, and to arrange them in such a manner as not to interfere too much with the onward progress of the narrative of her Life. But, after all, they cannot be used for this purpose as much as could be wished, and it has been found impossible to persevere with the original design of publishing all the letters in English. Such a plan would have involved the extension of the work to four or five volumes. It is with much regret that the design has been given up, and the plan followed in the present volume adopted in its place. The extreme anxiety of the poor inhabitants to secure for themselves and their children, the inestimable blessings of the ministra tions of the Church, is evident from the subscription list, which contains many contributions of single shil lings and even of pence; but the widow's mite, though reckoned a treasure in heaven, does not sufice to efl'ect an endowment on earth, and I venture to hope that my humble efforts to assist them, may therefore be received with indulgence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Lives of the Saints Action of the mind on itself has ever been the tendency of the scientific inquirer. If such attempts have any real value, it is in the evidence they bring forward of our profound ignorance of the most simple phenomena of the interior and unseen life - that child sleep ing so peacefully in most of us, only occasion ally stirring in the dreams that we learn in time to disregard. And unlike the aesthetic critic it is impossible for us to ignore the reality of these experiences of the Saints. For they have no intrinsic beauty, being really but a kind of profound logic following on that postulate Let it be granted that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. In the ex periences of St. Teresa or St. John of the Cross there is nothing that is of any pos sible value if the actual experiences told so coldly never really happened. And indeed, when we inquire more closely into the scienceof mysticism, we find scarcely beauty at all, only a kind of tragedy whose end we cannot see - a tragedy that is really after all only a comedy, so that it should end happily. And mysticism, regarded rightly not as the hysteri cal profession of those who in contemplating some bleeding Christ have lost that temper ance and sanity which it is the profound busi ness of criticism to preserve, but regarded as the hard and crystallized logic of some mighty argument, is really not a beautiful thing at all, in that almost its first requirement is a denial of life, a dislike and contempt for the beauty of the world. Entirely without humour, it has at least to this extent in uenced every school of Christian thought in that Christianity gener ally denies humour to God. Book excerpt: Acclaimed music writer Robert Hilburn’s “epic” and “definitive” (Rolling Stone) biography of music icon Paul Simon, written with Simon’s full participation—but without his editorial control—that “reminds us how titanic this musician is” (The Washington Post). For more than fifty years, Paul Simon has spoken to us in songs about alienation, doubt, resilience, and empathy in ways that have established him as one of the most beloved artists in American pop music history. Songs like “The Sound of Silence,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Still Crazy After All These Years,” and “Graceland” have moved beyond the sales charts and into our cultural consciousness. But Simon is a deeply private person who has said he will not write an autobiography or talk to biographers. Finally, however, he has opened up for Robert Hilburn—for more than one hundred hours of interviews—in this “brilliant and entertaining portrait of Simon that will likely be the definitive biography” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Over the course of three years, Hilburn conducted in-depth interviews with scores of Paul Simon’s friends, family, colleagues, and others—including ex-wives Carrie Fisher and Peggy Harper, who spoke for the first time—and even penetrated the inner circle of Simon’s long-reclusive muse, Kathy Chitty. The result is a deeply human account of the challenges and sacrifices of a life in music at the highest level. In the process, Hilburn documents Simon’s search for artistry and his constant struggle to protect that artistry against distractions—fame, marriage, divorce, drugs, record company interference, rejection, and insecurity—that have derailed so many great pop figures. “As engaging as a lively American tune” (People), Paul Simon is a “straight-shooting tour de force…that does thorough justice to this American prophet and pop star” (USA TODAY, four out of four stars). “Read it if you like Simon; read it if you want to discover how talent unfolds itself” (Stephen King).
