Book excerpt: This little book is an attempt at a study and interpretation of a lovable young saint, whose tercentenary this year will, it is to be hoped, increase special devotion to him. Saint John Berchmans is recommended as a patron and helper in solving the difficult problem of maintaining agreeable and efficient relations with the practical life of the hour without cooling in faith and reverence, of making the love of God the dominant motive of conduct without sacrificing any of the courtesies or failing in human sympathies. I have depended for most of the facts in my sketch upon the excellent and exhaustive biography of the Saint by the Rev. Francis Goldie, S.J. The English Jesuit drew a large part of his material from official processes and enquiries, and from the contemporary Life by Father Cepari, S.J., the Saint's superior and confessor. As far as facts go, I can, to use a quaint phraseJ be tracked in their snow. In the interpretation of facts I have sometimes allowed myself latitude. IN the following brief sketch of the life of Saint John Berchmans there will not be room for an elaborate description of the rich historical setting which Europe, and especially the Brabant and the Rome of that time afforded. To tell the truth, there is not much call for it. The interest of John's life lay in its contact with the big affairs of another world than this. The Saint touched human life, not at its points of earthly splendor and importance, but at its less obtrusive and less impressive surfaces of homely and domestic rounds of routine. The single hour of glorious life that is worth an age without a name, never came to John. Like most of us he was forced by circumstances into a pack-horse gait. His days, like ours, were much of a kind, singularly beggarly in their opportunities for spectacular heroism. And yet he achieved heroism. With the scanty materials supplied by the stern realism of an ordinary every-day life, he succeeded in kindling a splendor which has burnt its way brightly through the mists of time, and, after three centuries, remains a fixed and steady glow in the night that has fallen upon the deeds of by-gone generations.

Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1873, one of the worst yellow fever epidemics in U.S. history swept through Shreveport. As the deadly scourge claimed a quarter of the town's population, the dedicated efforts of five missionary priests offered a call to hope, even as they laid down their own lives in the struggle. True martyrdom is vanishingly rare, extolled as the highest possible sacrifice, yet Shreveport bore abundant witness through these five saintly priests. Their heroism in the midst of this tragic chapter is captured here by a trio of authors, winding a narrative that transcends history to reveal complex themes of virtue, sacrifice and response in times of human crisis and suffering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Martin’s final word is as Jungian as it is Catholic: God does not want us to be Mother Teresa or Dorothy Day. God wants us to be most fully ourselves.” —Washington Post Book World WITTY, WRYLY HONEST, AND ALWAYS ORIGINAL, My Life with the Saints is James Martin’s story of how his life has been shaped by some surprising friends—the saints of the Catholic Church. In his modern classic memoir, Martin introduces us to saints throughout history—from St. Peter to Dorothy Day, St. Francis of Assisi to Mother Teresa—and chronicles his lifelong friendships with them. Filled with fascinating tales, Martin’s funny, vibrant, and stirring book invites readers to discover how saints guide us throughout our earthly journeys and how they help each of us find holiness in our own lives. Featuring a new chapter from Martin, this tenth-anniversary edition of the best-selling memoir updates readers about his life over the past ten years. In that time, he has been a New York Times best-selling author, official chaplain of The Colbert Report, and a welcome presence in the media whenever there’s a breaking Catholic news story. But he has always remained recognizably himself. John L. Allen, Jr., the acclaimed Catholic journalist, contributes a foreword that shows how Martin has become one of the wisest and most insightful voices of this era. “An outstanding and often hilarious memoir.” —Publishers Weekly “One of the best spiritual memoirs in years.” —Robert Ellsberg “Remarkably engaging.” —U.S. Catholic One of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of the Year Winner of the Christopher Award Winner of the Catholic Press Association Book Award

Book excerpt: In this penetrating book written some five years before his death, Sheen explores the duality inherent in the vocation of the modern-day priest: his need, like that of Christ, to feel the holiness of God that binds him to the Father; and at the same time his need to become a victim, like Christ, for the world's sins, assuming its guilty and poverty in union with the Lord. "Those mysterious Priests" emphasizes the sense of obligation and spirituality that is such an essential part of any effective priesthood in the world of today.
