Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of James Gillespie Blaine Ames gillespie blaine was born January 31, 1830, at the Indian Hill Farm, Washington county, Pennsylvania, opposite the town of Browns ville. The old stone house in which he was born is yet standing, and is now included within the limits of West Brownsville - though at the time of his birth it was only the mansion house of the Gillespie farm. The house was erected by Mrs. Blaine's great-grand father, the elder Neal Gillespie, in 1778, on what was then the western frontier of civilization. The late James L. Bowman, of Brownsville, who was conver sant with the history of that locality, said it was the first stone house ever erected on the western side of the Monongahela river. Mr. Blaine entered public life by a strong associa ation in his immediate family, if not by a law Of heredity. His great-grandfather, Colonel Ephraim Blaine, of Carlisle, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, held the position of Commissary-general of the Amer ican army during the War of the Revolution, from the year 1778 to the end of the struggle in 1783. Book excerpt: Excerpt from James Gillespie Blaine No man who has borne a conspicuous part in the political history of the United States had a personality more interesting than that of James G. Blaine. He possessed all the qualities that draw men to a political leader: a keen, active mind, well-trained by early education and ripened by long experience; a strong and comprehensive grasp of public questions; unwavering devotion to principles espoused in boyhood and held to the last; great skill in the selection of points of attack and defence in political controversy, and in the management of a canvass; remarkable facility in putting in popular form his arguments upon a question at issue, supplemented by extraordinary readiness in off-hand debate. The traits enumerated excite admiration for him who possesses them, and inspire confidence in him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, Republicans teamed with activist African Americans to protect black voting rights through innovative constitutional reforms--a radical transformation of southern and national political structures. The Trial of Democracy is a comprehensive analysis of both the forces and mechanisms that led to the implementation of black suffrage and the ultimate failure to maintain a stable northern constituency to support enforcement on a permanent basis. The reforms stirred fierce debates over the political and constitutional value of black suffrage, the legitimacy of racial equality, and the proper sharing of power between the state and federal governments. Unlike most studies of Reconstruction, this book follows these issues into the early twentieth century to examine the impact of the constitutional principles and the rise of Jim Crow. Tying constitutional history to party politics, The Trial of Democracy is a vital contribution to both fields.

Book Synopsis Opening America's Market by : Alfred E. Eckes Jr.
Download or read book Opening America's Market written by Alfred E. Eckes Jr. and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the passage of NAFTA and other recent free trade victories in the United States, former U.S. trade official Alfred Eckes warns that these developments have a dark side. Opening America's Market offers a bold critique of U.S. trade policies over the last sixty years, placing them within a historical perspective. Eckes reconsiders trade policy issues and events from Benjamin Franklin to Bill Clinton, attributing growing political unrest and economic insecurity in the 1990s to shortsighted policy decisions made in the generation after World War II. Eager to win the Cold War and promote the benefits of free trade, American officials generously opened the domestic market to imports but tolerated foreign discrimination against American goods. American consumers and corporations gained in the resulting global economy, but many low-skilled workers have become casualties. Eckes also challenges criticisms of the 'infamous' protectionist Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which allegedly worsened the Great Depression and provoked foreign retaliation. In trade history, he says, this episode was merely a mole hill, not a mountain.
