The signal changes which have been wrought during the last two centuries, in the opinions, laws, and institutions of Christendom, are to be attributed less to the labours of enlightened statesmen and jurists, than to the teaching and example of those religious reformers who became the instruments in the Divine hand to dispel the clouds of superstition, and shake the foundations of despotism both in church and state. Among these, the subject of this work is entitled to hold a conspicuous rank.
