Excerpt: ...looked eastward for prayer and had a desk westward for what was done to the people, removed--the hideous organ blocking the east end of the north aisle--the stone altar buried under a huge wooden pile with "decoration," and its simple early English window blocked with a vulgar reredos. Anglo-Catholic taste is becoming as coarse and careless as the Roman. The next thing was to see that dear and beautiful Stonegappe--walls falling--trees felled past any possibility of restoring the woods for five generations, the wind let in to them where they were deliciously sheltered--the garden an appalling wilderness, one hothouse full of dead nettles, the next of stinging nettles--the lawn a field and the warm delicious rooms which were full of the noble presence of John Sidgwick and the living happiness and smile of my dear little "aunt," and the force and joyousness of all the cousinhood--bare, dirty, and beginning to go, floor and ceiling. The village has since their day been administered by a peasant who could scarcely be got to have four Communions a year, and when the present good Dutton came there the whole choir were unbaptized and a good woman asked, "Why there were no Missions connected with the Church of England?" How powerfully Christ Church and Lothersdale Church and Stonegappe and the Castle affected my whole view of life and thought, and they are in ruins--and I soon shall be. We went on to Kildwick and had a good warm welcome. The " Lang kirk o' Craven" has never in its history looked more religious and more cleanly sweet. Visited my dear old aunt's grave and prayed with the girls as at Embsay in the Church. Then we went to Keighley by train from Kildwick and went over hall, staircase and living-rooms of the dearest Riddlesden--and...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable true story of the life of Mary Benson: wife of an archbishop, friend of Queen Victoria, mother of three "unpermissably gifted" children—including E. F. Benson, and in love with dozens of women Sometimes touching and sometimes hilarious, this is the story of one lovable, brilliant woman and her trajectory through the often surprising opportunities and the remarkable limitations of a Victorian woman's life. Young Minnie Sidgwick was just 12 years old when her cousin, 12-year-old Edward Benson, proposed to her in 1853. Edward went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury and little Minnie—as Mary Benson—to preside a social world that ranged from Tennyson, Henry James, and Oscar Wilde to foreign royalty and Queen Victoria herself. Yet Mrs. Benson's most intense relationships were not with her husband and his associates, but with other women. When the Archbishop died, Mary, or "Ben" to her intimates, turned down an offer from the Queen to live at Windsor, and set up home in a Jacobean manor house with her friend Lucy Tait. Drawing on the diaries and novels of the Bensons themselves, including E. F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia novels, as well as the writing of contemporary writers and poets, this book creates a very rich portrait of Mary Benson, her family, her close female friends, and their world.

Book Synopsis Late Ruskin: New Contexts by : Francis O'Gorman
Download or read book Late Ruskin: New Contexts written by Francis O'Gorman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Ruskin said that 1860 marked the beginning of his 'proper work'. This study presents new, historicized readings of important texts and themes from that late period, 1860-1889, discussing in detail works including Unto this Last (1860), the Lectures on Art (1870), Fors Clavigera (1871-1884), and The Bible of Amiens (1880-85), and considering key themes such as Ruskin's politicized regard for Pre-Raphaelitism in the 1870s, and the complex topic of Ruskin and manliness. Claiming new and distinctive importance for this period of Ruskin's work, both in terms of Ruskin's development as a writer and his place in Victorian culture as it moved toward modernity, this book is the first solely devoted to the prolific later years, and draws on much unpublished material.
