Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Christopher Columbus A series of volumes, upon the Pioneers and Patriots of America, would certainly be defective if they did not contain an account of the adventures of Christopher Columbus, the most illustrious of all the pioneers of the New World. Columbus had his enemies. He has been vehemently assailed. The writer has endeavored to give a perfectly correct account of his character and career, and has been careful to present to the reader his authority for every important statement. Many may think that the assaults upon his character do not deserve so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Christopher Columbus, Discoverer of the New World: A Biographical Sketch As long as Englishmen are sailors and merchants, and love enterprise and admire greatness of courage, they ought to hold in veneration the memory of Christopher Columbus. If anything could shake his popularity in England, it is to be feared that it might be the discovery that he was not only a daring seaman, who, despising all timid counsels and dark forebodings, gallantly sailed his little craft into a world of unknown waters, but moreover all the time a saint of Holy Church; and that when he departed this life he was ripe for canonization, and that he even miraculously aids those who commend themselves to his powerful intercession. This is at least a new idea for Englishmen, who have derived in nearly every case all their information about the character and work of the great admiral from the beautiful Life written by Washington Irving. The Protestant mind is impatient of the supernatural. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christopher Columbus and the New World of His Discovery: A Narrative I have received the proofs of the new and revised edition of your Columbus, and I have noted the passages which have been materially altered from the original edition. This book marks an epoch in Columbian literature for in it the hero who discovered the New World is shown for the first time as a living man. You have raised him from the dust of documents and shown him as a human being, a creature of flesh and blood who acts thinks, loves and fights like ourselves, and who is subject, as all real men must be, to passions, mistakes and illusions. You have had the courage to cut loose from the traditional line followed by all the modern biographers of Columbus; and although I differ from you in certain details, I look upon your book as giving a more true and lively picture of the great discoverer than is contained in any other work written on the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Columbus: The Discoverer of America This Life of Columbus is one of a series of biographies prepared under my superintendence, and for the most part taken verbatim from my "History of the Spanish Conquest in America." That work was written chiefly with a view to illustrate the history of slavery, and not to give full accounts of the deeds of the discoverers and conquerors of the New World, much less to give a condensed memoir of each of them. It has, therefore, been necessary to re-arrange and add considerably to these materials, and for this assistance I am indebted to the skill and research of Mr. Herbert Preston Thomas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus is a figure in history which presents all the variations, the shiftings, the many-colored lights of a kaleidescope. He has no fixed name in the language of the nation. He is Columbus, Columbo, Colon, Colonus; he is Christoval Colon, and Christo pher Columbus. He is claimed by the residents of several places as having been born in their respective localities; he was descended from noble fami lies, and his father was a humble wool-comber. He was educated at a' university, he assisted his father in his lowly occupation. He was a student, a wool-comber, and a sailor at the immature age of fourteen years. 'he was familiar with geography, and yet, as the facts subsequently established, he scarcely knew its simplest rudiments. These are only a few of the contrarieties in his life as recorded in his tory. He discovered America, and yet he did noth ing of the kind. This Northern half of the American Continent is about to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of a discovery which he never made. The enormous region known as North America, he did not discover, he never even dreamed of its existence. He did not undertake his voyage influenced by the slightest idea that a new world was to be found; it was a different approach to an old world, India, that he sought, and he died in the belief that it was the coasts of India that he had encountered; hence the name West Indies given to the islands that confronted him as he sailed westward. There are no sources of exact information about many of the facts of his career. It is not known with certainty when he was born or where, or how his boyhood and youth were spent; or whether he was learned in the books or attained his success through a knowledge of nature at first hand. His death went almost unnoticed, and his burial place is unknown. At best, his biography is a recounting of the proba bilities, the story of what the biographer believes he did. Columbus was a mystic. A great vision came to him and became the controlling influence of his life. Faith in the V1s1on gave him courage to face hunger and pain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Columbus by Arthur Helps CHAPTER I. Early Discoveries in the Fifteenth Century. LEGENDS OF THE SEA. Modern familiarity with navigation renders it difficult for us to appreciate adequately the greatness of the enterprise which was undertaken by the discoverers of the New World. Seen by the light of science and of experience, the ocean, if it has some real terrors, has no imaginary ones. But it was quite otherwise in the fifteenth century. Geographical knowledge was but just awakening, after ages of slumber; and throughout those ages the wildest dreams had mingled fiction with fact. Legends telling of monsters of the deep, jealous of invasion of their territory; of rocks of lodestone, powerful enough to extract every particle of iron from a passing ship; of stagnant seas and fiery skies; of wandering saints and flying islands; all combined to invest the unknown with the terrors of the supernatural, and to deter the explorer of the great ocean. The half-decked vessels that crept along the Mediterranean shores were but ill-fitted to bear the brunt of the furious waves of the Atlantic. The now indispensable sextant was but clumsily anticipated by the newly invented astrolabe. The use of the compass had scarcely become familiar to navigators, who indeed but imperfectly understood its properties. And who could tell, it was objected, that a ship which might succeed in sailing down the waste of waters would ever be able to return, for would not the voyage home be a perpetual journey up a mountain of sea? We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Christopher Columbus Thus, when the great oriental civilization of India and Egypt seems efl'ete from age, and God wishes to call Asia and the West to a younger, more active, and more stirring civilization, Alexander starts, without well knowing why, from the valleys of Macedonia, taking with him the enthusiasm and the soldiers of Greece and before the terror and glory of his name, the known world becomes one, from the Indus to the extremes of Europe.
