Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Charlotte Bronte The life of Charlotte Bronte has been written once for all by Mrs. Gaskell; but as no criticism of Miss Bronte's novels is possible apart from the story of her life, I have attempted the biographical sketch the following pages will be found to contain. For any lengthened quotations from Mrs. Gaskell's book (which is throughout referred to as G., the paging being that of the popular edition in one volume), I have the kind permission of Messrs. Smith and Elder. Mr. Wemyss Reid's monograph on Charlotte Bronte (Macmillan, 1877), is well-known, though whether the author performs the task he somewhat unnecessarily laid upon himself of proving that Mrs. Gaskell's portrait requires re-touching, is a question which is best left open for the consideration of the judicious reader of both books. Mr. Leyland's two volumes, "The Bronte Family" (Sampson Low: 1886), deserve to be read by every one, though, so far as he busies himself with Branwell Bronte, he fails to interest those who, to employ an American figure, "have no use" for that young man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Charlotte Bronte, Vol. 1 of 2: Author of "Jane Eyre," "Shirley," "Villette," &C The Leeds and Bradford railway runs along a deep valley of the Aire; a slow and sluggish stream, compared to the neighbouring river of Wharfe. Keighley station is on this line of railway, about a quarter of a mile from the town of the same name. The number of inhabitants and the importance of Keighley have been very greatly increased during the last twenty years, owing to the rapidly extended market for worsted manufactures, a branch of industry that mainly employs the factory population of this part of Yorkshire, which has Bradford for its centre and metropolis. Keighley is in process of transformation from a populous, old-fashioned village, into a still more populous and flourishing town. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle Dear miss nussey, - We had not seen the article in Sharpe, and very possibly should not, if you had not directed our attention to it. We ordered a copy, and have now read the Few Words about Jane Eyre. The writer has certainly made many mistakes, but apparently not from any unkind motive, as he professes to be an admirer of Charlotte's works, pays a just tribute to her genius, and in common with thousands deplores her untimely death. His design seems rather to be to gratify the curiosity of the multitude in reference to one who had made such a sensation in the literary world. But even if the article had been of a less harmless character, we should not have felt inclined to take any notice of it, as by doing so we should have given it an importance which it would not other wise have obtained. Charlotte herself would have acted thus; and her character stands too high to be injured by the state ments in a magazine of small circulation and little influence statements which the writer prefaces with the remark that he does not vouch for their accuracy. The many laudatory notices of Charlotte and her works which appeared since her death may well make us indifferent to the detractions of a few envious or malignant persons, as there ever will be such. When practicable, l verified by personal investigation what I had heard and read. When dependent upon information received from others, I consulted what seemed to me the ablest authorities upon a subject which has been treated by many, with more or less skill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte Very soon the charge was widely circulated that Charlotte Bronte had satirized Thackeray, under the character of Rochester, bringing to light the sorrows of his private life. Her publishers immediately corrected the report, and when she next visited London she was introduced to Thackeray, who afterward paid her this tribute I remember the trembling, little frame, the little hand, the great, honest eyes. She gave me the impression of being a very pure, lofty, and high-minded person. As one thinks of that life, so noble, so lovely, of that passion for truth, of those nights of eager study, swarming fancies, invention, depression, elation, prayer; as one reads the necessarily incomplete, though most touching and admirable, history of the heart that throbbed in this one littleframe, with What awe do we await the tomorrow, when that which is now but darkly seen shall be clear. How well I remember the delight and won der and pleasure with which I read Jane Eyre, ' sent to me by an author whose name and sex were then alike unknown to me; and how, my own work pressing upon me, I could not, having taken the volume up, lay it down until it was read through. It is a quality as hard to define as impos sible to mistake even the static and dynamic terms of definition so freely and scientifically misused in the latest school of feminine romance would scarcely help us much to wards an adequate apprehension or expression of it. But its absence or its presence is or should be anywhere and always recognisable at a glance, whether dynamic or merely static, of a skilful or unskilful eye to discern the. In a letter to Miss Wooler, dated January 27 th, 1858, Charlotte Bronte wrote: "Villette is to be published to-morrow. Its appearance has been purposely delayed hitherto, to avoid discourteous clashing with Mrs. Gaskell's new work." The story was received, as its writer's friend and biographer tells us, "with one burst of acclamation"; but the laudatory notices only served to make the author's heart "swell with thankfulness to Him who takes note both of suffering, and work, and motives." But it seemed fated that each of her books should bring with it some jar in friendship or some disappointment in expectation. "Jane Eyre was the centre of a very vortex of discussion; "Shirley" touched for its writer the weakness in Greorge Henry Lewes's character; and now "Villette" brought forth a review in the Daily News which disappointed her in Harriet Martineau. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte the Woman: A Study Here is an extract from a letter written to Ellen Nussey when Charlotte was in her last situation as governess. The Taylors had written to her from Brussels, and it is almost a premonition of what life awaited her there. I hardly know what swells to my throat as I read her (mary Taylor's) letter: such a vehement impatience of restraint and steady work; such a strong wish for wings, wings such as wealth can furnish; such an earnest thirst to see, to know, to learn; something internal seemed to expand bodily for a minute. I was tantalised by the consciousness of faculties unexercised - then all collapsed and I despaired These rebellious and absurd emotions were only momentary; I quelled them in five minutes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte, 1816-1916: A Centenary Memorial But what is unanimous, is not so much the warm praise of Charlotte Bronte, in which this band of writers, from their various points of View, ultimately agree, as the testimony they bear to the feeling she still stirs in us - to the delight she still gives to this later generation, after more than half a century. The security of her fame, we see, is, yearly greater, as her star rises surely and steadily to its place in the nineteenth-century heaven. Fluctuations of opinion there have been, and must always be, in the case of those who, like the Brontes, challenge opinion, and, so to speak, take it by force. But it seems to me that the fluctuations are over, and the verdict given. And the members of the Bronte Society, during the last twentyilyears, have certainly helped to make it what it is. Their unworthy President bids them now a grateful farewell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
