Book excerpt: Readings in Sri Aurobindo's The Life Divine Volume 2 There is probably no other book [Sri Aurobindo's The Life Divine] that I know of which so well, completely, rationally and intuitively addresses the questions of our existence and the meaning of life, and provides a cogent answer rooted in the highest spiritual realization and yogic experience that can be adapted by all, regardless of their particular background or inclinations. Santosh Krinsky, a life long student of Sri Aurobindo, with great devotion, dedication and attention has served this crucial role of providing a bridge to help us enter more deeply into the vast universe of consciousness that Aurobindo holds open for humanity today. He leads the reader through each page of The Life Divine by extracting its essence. In this way, he makes the book easier to access, with no loss of its broader meaning. - from the Foreword by Dr. David Frawley, author of Yoga and Ayurveda

It pays particular attention to the psychological principles involved and their implications for the consummate understanding of human nature. It explores the psychological aspects of yoga theory and practice and discusses the aphorisms in Patanjali’s treatise on Yoga with necessary commentary in current psychological terminology to make them intelligible to students of psychology and other interested readers. Importantly, the author draws out the implications of these aphorisms for future psychological study and research. The book discusses the author’s concept of yoga of nonviolence which brings in Gandhian ideas into the framework of yoga. The author’s own vast experience in creating interfaces of yoga research with practice also informs the discussions in this book. This authoritative and topical book by an eminent academic like Professor Ramakrishna Rao is of interest to scholars and students of diverse disciplines, including but not limited to psychology, philosophy and wellbeing research.

Book excerpt: Many of us face the difficulty of trying to change something in our nature, only to find that it is either difficult or virtually impossible. The key to solving this problem actually lies in a deeper understanding of the true nature of our psychological being. We are actually composed of various different "parts" or "planes" of action that combine together, interact with one another and impinge upon one another. This understanding allows us to differentiate between a mental idea, a force of will, an emotional movement, a vital energy, or a physical structure, and thereby more clearly understand the results of our psychological efforts and growth activities.

Book excerpt: This book begins with a chapter about Sri Aurobindo and the prophetic nature of his opus magnum, Savitri, using references from Carl Jung. I then examine Jungs creation myth, using comparative material form Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. I end with a note on heart-Self centered transformation and one involving spiritual transfiguration. I follow with a discussion on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien from the perspective of the mythical psyche, using comparative material from Jung. I subsequently discuss Jungs take on contemporary religion, Gnosticism and alchemy, along with his encounter with the East. Jung emphasizes the compensatory needs of the Western psyche with prophetic declarations on the psychological and spiritual transformations required for the new aeon. I subsequently examine Jean Gebsers study on the evolution of consciousness, and the demand today to develop an integral structure of consciousness, referring to both Jung, and Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Stephen Phillips focuses on one of the most important poems about meditation in world literature, as understood by two of the greatest philosophers of India, one classical, one modern. Sankara's commentaries on the Upanisads are a core of the Vedanta tradition and Aurobindo is a towering figure of 20th-century Hindu thought. This is the first time their approaches have been studied together. The Isa (c. 500 BCE) an “Upanisad” belongs to a genre of “adhyatmika” learning-concerning self and consciousness-in early Indian literature. According to the Ancient Indian tradition of yoga, meditation is antithetical to willful bodily and mental action. Breathing is all you do. In the conception of the Isa Upanisad, we are told that the best that comes from meditation is because of what the “Lord” is. In Sankara's interpretation it comes to block out the little “you,” whereas according to Aurobindo it comes as a divine connection, an occult “Conscious Force” belonging to truer part of oneself, atman, and an “opening” to that self's native energy. Framed around Aurobindo's translation of each of the Isa's eighteen verses, along with a translation of each verse, Phillips follows a different reading of Sankara as laid out in his commentary. All this is done against the backdrop of modern scholarship. Convergences and divergences of these streams are the focus throughout. Appendix A presents the Upanisad with the two readings side by side. This book traces a worldview and consonant yoga teaching common to two authors who are typically taken to be oceans apart, not only chronologically but in intellectual stance. Addressing a huge gap in the contemporary literature on meditation in the Hindu traditions, Phillips presents a compelling new way of thinking about meditation in the Advaita Vedanta philosophy and Upanisad.

Book excerpt: This is a collection of careful, objective, historically sensitive studies of modern commentators on the Bhagavadgita, one of the basic scriptures of Hinduism, and one which has been widely read in the modern West. Experts on modern Indian religious thought show how Ghandi, Vivekananda, Radhakrishnan, Bhaktivedanta, Aurobindo, Tilak, Bhave, Sivananda, the Theosophists, and Bhankim read, used and interpreted the Gita. Collectively, the essays display the different backgrounds and orientations of the major Indian thinkers of our time. An Introduction and a Conclusion provide a perspective on the thinkers and identify common themes which are part of modern emphases.
