Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Tennyson Professor Lounsbury's name, I suppose, is most closely associated by the public with his studies in Chaucer and Shakespeare. His literary taste, however, was singularly catholic. Pope and Dryden, for example, appealed to him strongly because of their pugnacity and the keenness of their satire. Their poems he knew intimately, and he often quoted passages from them in conversation, not always accurately but rather by way of a paraphrase which gave new edge to an epigram. Of later poets the ones he read most were Byron, Browning, and Tennyson. From any one of the three, he would repeat, when in the mood for it, long stretches running to hundreds of verses. Among the poems of Tennyson which he sometimes recited were 'Locksley Hall, ' the 'Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington, ' and parts of 'Maud, ' 'The Princess, ' and 'In Memoriam.' Many of the quotations in this volume were first written out from memory. This admiration for Tennyson began in youth and continued through a long life. It was his habit when a schoolboy to clip from the newspaper any new production of the poet and paste it in a scrapbook, first, I daresay, committing the lines to memory; and the most notable essay that he wrote while in college was a defence of 'Maud' against hostile criticism. Book excerpt: Alfred Lord Tennyson, Queen Victoria's favorite poet, commanded a wider readership than any other of his time. His ascendancy was neither the triumph of pure genius nor an accident of history: he skillfully crafted his own career and his relationships with his audience. Fame and recognition came, lavishly and in abundance, but the hunger for more never left him. Resolving never to be anything except 'a poet', he wore his hair long, smoked incessantly, and sported a cloak and wide-brimmed Spanish hat.Tennyson ranged widely in his poetry, turning his interests in geology, evolution and Arthurian legend into verse, but much of his work relates to his personal life. The poet who wrote The Lady of Shalott and The Charge of the Light Brigade has become a permanent part of our culture. This enjoyable and thoughtful new biography shows him as a Romantic as well as a Victorian, exploring both the poems and the pressures of his era, and the personal relationships that made the man.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson's Life and Poetry: And Mistakes Concerning Tennyson Tennyson's literary career lasted nearly seventy years, for he was a prolific verse writer so long ago as 1825, when a lad of sixteen. His boyish rhymes were published anonymously, along with those of his elder brother Charles, in Poems by Two Braillers. Tl'l'e preface or advertisement of this precious volume was dated March, 1827; the ms. Of the poems went to the printer in 1826. For the manuscript the youths were paid fifteen pounds in money and five pounds' worth of books; a few months after the Laureate's death it was sold (with the receipt) for 480. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson The nineteenth century is well-named the wonderful, for among all the centuries of man's history there is none that can rival it in variety and range of achievement. Tennyson's life almost spanned this great period. He saw the old order change and give place to new in all departments of human activity. When he was archil-d, tra velling, for instance, was still conducted by almost the same means as it had been when, fifteen cen turies earlier, a Roman emperor passed from the remote province of Britain to Rome. 'when steam came, all this was changed. A new age, if only in mechanical power, was come. But with the new external advance in power went the internal or invisible advance - men's thoughts were widened. As the railway-train sped man on to conquests over time and distance, so the onward-speeding thoughts of man were to lead him ever forward, spinning down the ringing grooves of change. The mere catalogue of the new thoughts and new actions would fill a volume. The great body of modern science was developed. The far-influencing theory of Darwin, that all forms of life were developed from fewer and simpler forms through countless ages, was applied to the study of all branches of knowledge, includ ing Religion. Old hereditary rights and privileges gave way more than ever to those founded on human worth, as political power passed from the few to the many. With the passing of power into the hands of the people, there arose also the query, - are not women of the people, too, and shall they not have education, and rights and votes? On all these and a thousand other topics a flood of literature was poured out. Enlightenment spread, and as it spread, unrest necessarily increased: an enlightened populace will not be content with less than its due. Mean while England's over-seas dominions grew - Mel bourne was founded when the poet was twenty six - commerce, too, grew with tremendous rapidity, and brought men of all nations more and more into contact with each other. Despite the numerous wars, there grew steadily the realisa tion of the great truth, proclaimed by both reli gion and science that all men are brothers, in spirit and in flesh. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson: A Modern Portrait MY aim in this book has been to create a living portrait of a poet and a man as I have conceived him after a close study both of his life and his poetry and of their intimate reactions. For twenty years of middle life, the period contained in Part II. And some of Part III. Of this book, Tenny son's poetry supplies the more vital and explicit evidence. In youth and in later life it exists rather as the implicit habit of his life, from which, therefore, I have been careful not to disentangle it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson, the Story of His Life The Life of a great man cannot be written in one, or even in many, biographies and it is only after the task has been frequently attempted that a measure of success is attainable. Not until we have become thoroughly acquainted with a man's outer life can we with confidence lift the veil, and, entering the inner sanctuary of his being, seek somewhat to understand the secrets of his soul, and learn how they dominate his thought and influence his work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson and in Memoriam an Appreciation and a Study That is not the figure which Tennyson pre sents on his first appearance in the arena where he was to outstrip all rivals. His Keepsahe period lasted long. Looking back, we can indeed discern in the volume of 1842 - in the Ulysses, in the Morte d'arthur, in The Two Voices - the promise of nearly all that was to come. But these were imbedded in much that was pretty but petty, Wordsworthian idylls too long drawn out, Lords of Burleigh and Ladies Clare, that half justified the early scofi'ers, Wilson and the rest. Even the melody, though sweet and clear, was thin and at times tinkling. Grace, not force or dignity, was the character istic up to and including The Princess of 1847, the most graceful poem of such length in the language. The Rape of the loch, the only other poem in English literature that can be compared with it, is more witty than graceful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tennyson Epoch The series of which this volume is the ninth may he said to have three objects: First, to teach the history of our literature in a rational and orderly manner; second, to illuminate the history of England by exhibiting the thoughts of its men of letters in their own words; and, third, to display, as if in a gallery, some specimens of the inheritance into which every English-reading boy and girl has entered. It has been too long the practice to teach English literature in handbooks which give only the briefest examples, if any, of the works they profess to describe; and our many excellent school anthologies, from their want of a definite historical arrangement, and the absence of prose, fail almost entirely to give a connected view of the development of our language. Now, the history of our literature, falling, as it undoubtedly does, into a series of well-marked periods of excellence, appears to lend itself peculiarly to the historical treatment suggested by the word 'epoch.' In this volume, for reasons given in the Introduction, I have been compelled to include a period which really contains two epochs. My general principles of selection are three - the intrinsic merit and interest of the piece, its convenience for use in schools, and its ability to stand by itself without great detriment from the absence of context. Also I avoid those works which are likely to be read elsewhere. For this reason Dickens, Thackeray, and the novelists generally, are here omitted.
