Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of St. Bernard The barbarians, who, issuing from their fastnesses from time to time, laid waste the fair lands of the south, and divided between them the Roman Empire, were altogether strangers to the arts and sciences, and knew no other occu patiou but the chase or war. The right of the strong to Oppress the weak was the only law which they obeyed; conquest was their great and only object of glory. They professed a sovereign contempt for the arts of civilized life, and were not capable of estimating the blessings which a settled polity is calculated to confer. Though the Christian religion, which they embraced, softened by degrees the fero city of their disposition and the wildness of their habits, it was not until after many centuries that its results were seen. His life thus almost coincides with the central portion of the Middle Ages. He witnessed also what may be regarded as especially mediaeval events. He saw the First and the Second Crusades; he saw the rising liberties of the communes; the beginnings of scholasticism under Abelard were contemporary with him. A large church reformation, and the noblest period of-growth and influence that monasticism was destined to know, were social facts with which he was not only coeval, but on which he has left the deepest marks of his action and genius. Saint Bernard was a Burgundian. Not far from st. Bernards Dijon, in full view of the range of the Cote d'Or hills, pa was a feudal castle, situate on a small eminence which went by the name of Fontaines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Works of Saint Bernard, Vol. 1: Abbot of Clairvaux There are so many things to be said respecting the career and the writings of S. Bernard of Clairvaux, and so high are the praises which must, on any just view of his character, be considered his due, that an eloquence not less than his own would be needed to give adequate expression to them. He was an untiring and transcendently able labourer; and that in many fields. In all his manifold activities are manifest an intellect vigorous and splendid, and a magnetic attractiveness of personal character which never failed to influence and win over others to his views. His entire disinterestedness, his remarkable industry, the soul-subduing eloquence which seems to have been equally effective in France and in Italy, over the sturdy burghers of Liege and the turbulent population of Milan, and above all the wonderful piety and saintliness which formed the noblest and the most engaging of his gifts - these qualities, and the actions which came out of them, rendered him the ornament, as he was more than any other man, the leader, of his own time, and have drawn upon him the admiration of succeeding ages. We have to look at S. Bernard in more than one capacity. First and chiefly, he was a monk, for he lived in an age when the most elevated religious enthusiasm inevitably took the form of the monastic vocation.
