Had Anselm come into the world a century later than he did, he would have found in the canons of St. Ours a cloistered brotherhood resembling in its essential features a community of monks; for precisely a hundred years after his birth that corporation relinquished the secular life to enter upon one ordered after a religious model; and the antiquary who now treads the cloister1 which their feet once wore, will find upon the capital of one of the exquisite little pillars of its colonnade this inscription: ?
