Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Martin Luther The biography of Luther is in truth a history of his age, so wide-spread were his connections, so universal was his influence. Yet, singularly enough, most of his biographers have traced his life chiefly and intentionally from a personal stand-point. These works are therefore fragmentary, as witness the lives by Michelet and Meurer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Martin Luther On one point there is no difference of opinion, the remarkable and immediate success of the work. A wide examination2 of contemporary literature has shown that by 1526, three fourths of the quotations from the New Testament in German were from Luther's version. The Catholics paid it the sincere compliment of plagiarism for the rapidly executed version of Emser was but a light revision of his opponent's work. Only the Zwing lians for a time stood aloof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Martin Luther: To Which Is Prefixed an Expository Essay on the Lutheran Reformation But there is a third method, somewhat different from either of the others. It may, for the sake of distino tion, be termed the method of expositron. In this case, the examiner may be supposed previously to have so considered the subject as to have made up his min'd upon it. The facts have all been examined, and are associated with settled judgments of approval or blame. An Essay constructed on this principle will aim chiefly at information. The writer will not con ceal from his readers that he has a decided opinion on the subject which he is about to bring before them, and may very properly assume that, on all the leading prin ciples of the case, their Opinions coincide with his own. What he seeks to do is to make that coincidence more complete by a careful explanation. He will endeavour, therefore, to give such a statement of the leading facts of the case as shall make the development of their principles an easier task, and enable the reader to dis tinguish between what are only accidental adjuncts, and what are rationally and properly effects and results. Nearly every year adds to the number of new religions. The major1ty fabricate their own religion, and many set forth their peculiar no tions and whims as new revelations, to say nothing of the fools who, in their satanlc ln fatuation, proclaim it as the highest wisdom to believe in no 'god at all. But what is sad dest of all 1s that so many, who 'still extol the Bible as the word of God, 111 so many points depart from it, and follow the false opinions of men in preference to the blessed and unchang able utterances of the God of truth. Of what avail are all these futile doctrines of men? They are vain cobwebs, and nothing more. Though they appear ever so beautiful and ingenlous, they are but shining bubbles which soon must burst. Wo to the unhappy mortals, who put their trust in them tempo i'a'l and eternal ru1n 1s their doom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Martin Luther The sixteenth century was the most remarkable and splendid age of the world, both as it respects the great and exalted men, and the important events which it produced. The most important of all events, which render the sixteenth century the most splendid period since the era of the Saviour of the world, is the Reformation to which that century gave birth. Welcome must this change have been to all Germany, a country where the liberty of the subject, and the freedom of conscience seemed to be at home; where liberty, since the time of the Romans till this very moment, knew how mightily to protect her rights against every attempt of tyrants, against the most subtle artifice of usurpers, and against the encroachments of despotism and oppression. From Germany proceeded the power which caused Rome, the once proud mistress of almost the whole known world, to tremble, even when she was at the zenith of her potency. And from Germany also pro ceeded the power which shook the triple crown of the most artful religious and temporal usurper at more modern Rome, and brought her to the very brink of inevitable ruin. In such a country as Germany, darkness could not long abide, nor tyrants with impunity long exercise their intolerable profligacies. It was in Germany, where the morning dawn of a pure worship of the Supreme Being, and of a wise liberty of conscience was destined to arise. But it was only in Italy, a country which, in other respects, was the seat of the greatest mental refinement, where a burning climate heats the blood to the production of the wildest and most inordinate passions; in Italy, the mind could. Be so far subdued and debased, the feelings of liberty so far depressed, that man literally crept in the very dust, and willingly bent his neck to the yoke 'tvhich superstition and the lust of dominion riveted. To a romantic people, which, by a warm and agreeable atmosphere, a luxurious and ever young and ever smiling nature, and the most manifold fascinations of art, is kept in an eternal enjoyment of the pleasures of sense, a religion was better suited, whose magnificent pomp, whose abundance of riddles and secrets allure the fancy, and whose doctrines insinuate themselves into the soul by means of forms ingeniously contrived by the painter's art. Surely, then, it is incumbent on us who have lighted the beacon of invitation to bid others come and enjoy with us liberty of person and conscience, to know him better. Nor is it only for this. The life of Luther is one for which we find no parallel in any history, and as such it is worth knowing. I have tried to view it from an impartial standpoint, to see him as a man among men, leaving polemics and the niceties of chronology to those who have tastes in that direction. J. H. T. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Martin Luther, Vol. 1 of 2 But Augustine Bishop of Hippo, a convert from Manichaeism through the excellent example of his mother Monica and the preaching of ambrose, is the greatest name of this period. He taught salvation by grace alone, as none had taught it since St. Paul and he may with justice be esteemed the spi ritual father of Luther and the Reformation. He was raised up in God's providence to be a witness to the truth before the grossest doctrinal corruptions had taken firm root, as Luther was raised up when the papal church was overshadowed with their fullest growth. In the intervening thousand years, what ever true Christianity subsisted within the Roman pale is due to the Scriptures or to Augustine their best expositor. And it would be as impossible for Rome to reconcile the decrees of the Council of Trent with the writings of Augustine, whose authority she professes to recognize, as with those of Luther himself. The Pope claimed to be the Vicegerent of Jesus Christ on earth; the priests called themselves the chosen generation, the sacred order; the laity were, of course, all baptized and repeated their prayers in churches without number; and the cross might be seen standing up everywhere. Now, was the condition of the church really so deplorable as to justify the breath ing of the suspicious word Reformation?
