Book excerpt: Hinduism flourished in the districts around Poona in Bombay to a far greater extent than in the rest of India, hence the problems facing the British administrators of Maharashtra were quite different from those confronting them in other parts of India. The solutions they proposed and the policies which emerged determined the social changes which took place in the Maharashtra in the nineteenth century. This book analyses these changes by focussing on the rise of new social groups and the dissemination of new values and shows how these social groups and values interacted with the traditional order in Maharashtra to create a stable regional society. Originally published in 1968.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lokamanya (revered leader) Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856 - 1920), the extremist politician of Maharashtra, a region of western India, was one of the first Congress Party leaders to adopt the strategy of mass politics. Interpretations of his role and his achievement differen greatly. Some historians depict Tilak as India's first mass politician who was a creative nationalist myth-maker; other suggest that he was an opportunist who manipulated politics for selfish, elitist purposes. With an eye to resolving these conflicting opinions, Cashman related Tilak's ideology to his political organization. the author concentrates on four mass movements, studying the Lokamanya when he was engaged in political action and comparing his public statements with his political tactics. This approach provides a means of examining the manner in which Tilak redefined myths and of assessing the value of myths for purposes of political mobilization. Cashman suggests deficiencies in previous interpretations of Tilak. Arguing that the limitations of the mass movements need not be explained by the inadequacies of myths, he demonstrates that instead they reflected the transitional state of Maharashtraian society, which lacked a broad consensus. Tilak was active at a time when there was no common goal, no broader objective, in which sectional interests might be subsumed. He symbolized the uncertain striving of his society for some new direction, whose nature was yet unknown. He did not create the myth of the Lokamanya or the ideology of nationalism but, responding to social and political pressures, became a prisoner of the myths. Much writing of Indian history has been influenced either by a narrow ideological approach or by a retreat to arithmetical pragmatism. Cashman attempts to restore a balance by reexamining the relationship of myth to politics. Book excerpt: Highly revered by hundreds of millions of Indian devotees over that past three centuries, Dasbodh is truly a "Grantharaj," a King among spiritual books. The great Saint Samartha Ramdas has many literary works attributed to him, of which, Dasbodh and Manache Shlok are the two most well-known. Dasbodh is very highly revered and commonly studied, even in many business and management courses. The sound principles contained within its pages help people from all walks of life to be successful not only in spiritual life, but in business, politics, society, and family life as well. Saint Samartha Ramdas is considered to be somewhat unique when compared to other previous or contemporary Maharashtran saints such as Jnanadev, Eknath, and Tukaram, in that their teachings for the most part focused exclusively on the topics Vedanta, devotion, mysticism, and spiritual practice. The teachings of Samartha Ramdas not only includes these topics, but in them, we also find messages of the importance of the wise use of positive effort, discrimination, determination, and practical shrewdness in daily life and politics. Samartha is recognized as having been a great leader and an advocate for socio-political and religious reforms, regeneration, and reorganization. He is well-known for promoting the ideal of establishing and maintaining a harmonious, happy, and morally healthy society supported by a solid foundation of deep spirituality.

Book excerpt: COMPARABLE IN LASTING significance to the famous classics TheWay of a Pilgrim and Brother Lawrence's The Practice of the Presence of God, this book is an extraordinary spiritual autobiography. It recounts the story of a homeless monk's journey as he travels the dusty roads and paths of the Indian subcontinent, from the ancient temples of the south to the awe-inspiring, snow-covered Himalayas of the north. This is the tale of a pilgrimage, vividly and compellingly told, taken with the hallmarks of complete faith in the Creator and constant remembrance of God. Swami Ramdas did not accept money and treated all people he encountered as manifestations of his Beloved. The narrative contains many inspiring accounts of how his pure love transformed people who at first treated him very harshly. Whatever situation he was placed in, he didn't fail to notice the lighter side, which appealed to his keen sense of the comic and ludicrous in life. He never lost this quality, even after he became God-intoxicated and lived on the road in total, blissful surrender to the divine will. Many readers find themselves in a lifelong love affair with this story. This book is the first in a trilogy chronicling Swami Ramdas' pilgrimage to God-realization. The next two volumes, In the Vision of God, volumes I and II, are also available from Blue Dove Press.
