Some of them I have taken no pains to obviate, as. They concerned the convenience of my publisher: meantime, while the third sheet was in the press, I was informed that a Life of More, by the hand of the late Sir James Mackin tosh, had appeared in the twenty-first volume of Dr. Lardner's Cyclopaedia. Had this occurred at an earlier stage of the business, I should, of course, have re nounced my own attempt; especially, as I had the great pleasure of finding Sir J ames's views similar to my own on the point in question. Book excerpt: English statesman and writer Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) is best remembered as both a humanist scholar-as author of the classic 1516 political satire *Utopia*-and a religious martyr: he was beheaded by King Henry VIII for refusing to acknowledge the monarch as the head of the Church of England. Much of what we know about his life comes courtesy of this biography, by his son-in-law, English politician WILLIAM ROPER (1498-1578). Written in the mid 16th century but not published till 1626, this is history told from the perspective of a primary source-it is a riveting eyewitness account of the last days of one of the great figures of English history and literature. This reprint of an 1822 edition includes some family letters, including More's last written communication before his death.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Thomas More It is now twelve years since I began to study the life and writings of the great hero of conscience whom this book commemorates. The work has been often laid aside, but never wholly abandoned, and in spite of the demands of a laborious profession I have been able, I think, to become acquainted with most of the literature which describes and illustrates Mores beautiful life. With the exception of Mr.S. L.Lee's admirable, and, for its length, exhaustive, contribution to the Dictionary of National Biography, which cannot be obtained in a separate form, and Father Bridgett's valuable biography, which is concerned primarily with the life of More as a defender of the Papal Supremacy, there are no modern works which have made use of all the material that is at the disposal of students of this period. Much interest attaches to the earlier biographies from from the circumstances connected with their composition and publication. William Roper's book about Sir Thomas More may justly claim a place amongst the select few which are no less rich in matter than pleasing in form. In a style which may seem involved sometimes, but has nevertheless all the charm that belongs to our language in the vigour of its literary youth, he tells a story of the deepest human interest, and he tells of things which he himself had seen and heard, and remembered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written from the Tower of London, these letters of Thomas More still speak powerfully today. The story of Thomas More, recently told in Peter Ackroyd's bestselling biography, is well known. In the spring of 1534, Thomas More was taken to the Tower of London, and after fourteen months in prison, the brilliant author of Utopia, friend of Erasmus and the humanities, and former Lord Chancellor of England was beheaded on Tower Hill. Yet More wrote some of his best works as a prisoner, including a set of historically and religiously important letters. The Last Letters of Thomas More is a superb new edition of More's prison correspondence, introduced and fully annotated for contemporary readers by Alvaro de Silva. Based on the critical edition of More's correspondence, this volume begins with letters penned by More to Cromwell and Henry VIII in February 1534 and ends with More's last words to his daughter, Margaret Roper, on the eve of his execution. More writes on a host of topics-prayer and penance, the right use of riches and power, the joys of heaven, psychological depression and suicidal temptations, the moral compromises of those who imprisoned him, and much more. This volume not only records the clarity of More's conscience and his readiness to die for the integrity of his religious faith, but it also throws light on the literary works that More wrote during the same period and on the religious and political conditions of Tudor England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Sir Thomas More Besides the two editions mentioned there exists a photographic facsimile of the manuscript prepared by Mr. R. B. Fleming and issued in a series of Tudor Facsimile d104s. It is the full size of the original and leaves nothing to be desired in the way of technical execution, but of course the covering of tracing paper and the staining of the margins render many passages hopeless for the photographer. What purpose of general utility it was thought that a facsimile of which a large part is absolutely illegible could serve, I do not know, but to me it has proved invaluable, indeed without its help I should have hardly found the present work possible. It is also incidentally of value in preserving intact one or two passages which have since been damaged in the manuscript. It remains to say something as to the present edition. The rules which govern the editing of the Malone Society's texts of course forbade any attempt to patch up a compromise between the original and revised versions of the play. On the other hand there were obvious drawbacks to printing the manu script exactly as it stood. After some hesitation therefore I determined to print first the whole of the original text so far as it has been preserved, and then to gather together at the end all the various attempts at revision in so far as they were made on separate leaves and did not merely consist of triļ¬‚ing additions or directions written in the margins of the original sheets. These insertions I have printed in the order in which they at present stand in the manuscript, and have numbered them I - VI. The hand in which any particular passage is written I have indicated in the headline and more minutely in the notes. Any addition or alteration (of a whole word or more) made in a hand different from that of the text of that passage, is distinguished by the substitution of small capitals for lower case type; specific information concerning the hand being added in the notes. Looking up she says to herself) - "On asking Mr. Gunnel to what use I should put this fair volume, he did suggest my making it a kind of family register, wherein to note the more important of our domestic passages, whether joy or grief, 'You are ready at the pen, Mistress M., he was pleased to say, but 'twill be well to write in English, which it is expedient for you not altogether to neglect, even for the more honourable Latin.' (Smiling.) It is well to make trial of Gonnellus - albeit our daily course is so methodical that 'twill afford scant subject for the pen." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Writings of Sir Thomas More: Lord Chancellor of England and Martyr Under Henry VIII In More's dedicatory letter to Thomas Ruthal of his translation into Latin of three of Lucian's dialogues, he complained that writers of the lives of saints sometimes indulge in falsehoods: "They have scarcely left. a life of martyr or of virgin without foisting into it something untrue - piously, no doubt! for of course there was a danger lest truth, left to itself, should not be able to stand upright; so that it was necessary to prop it up with lies!" I may say that my first anxiety in composing this Life of the illustrious writer, chancellor and martyr, has been not to merit this reproach; to state nothing that I did not believe, and to accept nothing for which I had not historical evidence. My first care was to collate the biographies of More already in existence. In giving some account of the principal of these, I shall be able at the same time to state the sources from which a correct and complete life of More can be drawn.
