Book excerpt: Provides the first commentary on the full second book of Sidonius Apollinaris' letters The works of Sidonius Apollinaris, poet, politician and bishop, have long been the subject of interest in historical and theological studies, as he documents the life of the Gallo-Roman aristocracy and church in a time of social and political upheaval. The literary qualities of Sidonius' letters, however, have only recently become the focus of research. This book places this aspect centre stage, considering Sidonius' rich intertextuality with other authors, especially Pliny the Younger. This critical edition comprises a newly edited Latin text of the second book of Sidonius Apollinaris' Epistulae, a modern English translation and a literary, linguistic and historical commentary on the fourteen letters. The detailed commentary focuses on the literary Sidonius and his broad education and offers a narratological analysis of the text, highlighting its role as a book of leisure in the overarching collection of letters. The introduction focuses on the latest research on the second book of the Epistulae and shows how it is carefully anchored within the wider nine-book collection of letters. Judith Hindermann is a freelance researcher in Latin Philology at the University of Basel. Her research interests include ancient letters, Roman elegy, the ancient novel, animals in ancient literature, Neo-Latin literature and gender studies in Classics.

Book excerpt: Is the world better off without Christianity? Combining narrative with keen critique of contemporary debates, author and historian John Dickson gives an honest account of 2,000 years of Christian history that helps us understand what Christianity is and what it's meant to be. To say that the Christian Church has an "image problem" doesn't quite capture it. From the Crusades and the Inquisition to the racism and abuse present in today's Church--both in Catholic and Protestant traditions--the institution that Christ established on earth has a lot to answer for. But the Church has also had moments throughout history when it has been in tune with Jesus' teachings--from the rise of charity to the invention of hospitals. For defenders of the faith, it's important to be able to recognize the good and bad in the church's history and be inspired to live aligned with Christ. For skeptics, this book is a thought-provoking introduction to the idea that Christianity is, despite all, an essential foundation of our civilization. Bullies and Saints will take you on a big-picture journey from the Sermon on the Mount to the modern church: Giving contextual accounts of infamous chapters of Christian history, such as the Crusades, and acknowledging their darkness. Outlining the great movements of the faith and defending its heroes and saints, some of whom are not commonly recognized. Examining the Church beside the teachings and life of Jesus and how it has succeeded in its mission to imitate Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre de Bérulle (1575?1629) is one of the foremost personalities of early modern Catholicism. As the founder of the "French school" of spirituality, he has exercised a profound influence on the Church from the seventeenth century to the present day. Until now, however, very little of Bérulle's writings have been available in English. This volume provides the first complete English translation of his best-known work, first printed in Paris in 1623 and titled Discourses on the State and Grandeurs of Jesus, by the Ineffable Union of the Deity with Humanity, and the Submission and Servitude that Is Due Him and His Most Holy Mother in Response to This Wondrous State. Composed in his maturity, this work expresses Bérulle's theology of the Man-God, whose self-emptying has enabled us to become "capable" of God. In contrast to other spiritual writers who taught that mystical union with God follows the extinction of all sensory and conceptual awareness and all activity of willing, Bérulle's focus is on the faithful soul's participation in what he calls Jesus' "states," or inner dispositions. The state that Bérulle describes and honors supremely in this text is Jesus' state of self-emptying in the mystery of the Incarnation. In the hypostatic union, our humanity in Christ is lifted up to heaven, and Christ is the first fruit of humanity-made-divine, the "firstborn among many brothers." Through him we become children of God by adoption, participants in God's divine being. This is an outstanding translation, conveying not only the meaning but also the beauty and rhetorical features of the original. The Discourses will repay reading as a poignant source of personal devotion, a primary text of the Catholic Reformation, and a classic of spiritual theology.
