Book excerpt: Sometimes legends should stay buried in the past but there’s always a curious person that just has to be sure the legend is really true and then they will be satisfied. Then there is a chance that digging it up can have far greater consequences such as death but usually, that thought doesn’t even enter the person or person’s mind. Even if the consequences can be fatal the curious feel that it’s worth the risk. This is where the fool hearty comes in and the story begins with Dr. Steven Brace. He had just received his Ph.D. in Archeology and was feeling pretty cocky, and was ready to have his name alongside other famous archeologist’s before him in the history books. As for this doctor, the only name he would be getting for himself would be his name listed in the obituaries. The good ole doctor started doing research into some legends and one that caught his eye was about pirates that had buried treasure on an island called Dead Man’s Island. Legend has it that the island had buried treasure that was buried somewhere on Dead Man’s Island in the Atlantic Ocean. A pirate ship that was sailing next to the island called The Ghost Dog’s captain decided it would be a good place to bury their treasure. So the ship dropped anchor and lowered a small boat into the water to take the captain and his three men into shore to bury their treasure. Once the pirate’s boat reached the shore they were able to find a small cave on the island to bury their treasure. Just as the treasure was buried they were greeted by natives of the island. Instead of a warm welcome by the natives they were met with spears and beheaded on the spot and left in the cave along with the buried treasure to rot.

Book excerpt: More than just a history of the real 'pirates of the Caribbean,' Pirates: A History explores piracy from ancient times to the present day, from the bloodthirsty Viking raiders who terrorised northern Europe to the legendary female Chinese pirate of the 1920s, Lai Choi San. In this history we see how thin the line was between a royally chartered privateer and a pirate, most notably epitomised by Francis Drake. Then there were the Renegades: Europeans captured by the Barbary corsairs who converted to Islam and became pirate captains in their own right. Some were simply cut-throat drunkards, but many pirate ships were run on surprisingly progressive, democratic principles. The 'golden age' of piracy is examined afresh and the colourful characters of the era brought to life. Accounts of Blackbeard, Black Barty and William Kidd illustrate the truth behind the legends of the Jolly Roger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would be an understatement to say that pop culture's perception of piracy and pirates has been primarily influenced by Captain Edward Teach, known to the world as Blackbeard, the most famous pirate of all time. An English pirate who terrorized the high seas near the Carolinas in the early 18th century, a period often referred to as the Golden Age of Piracy, Blackbeard was the gold standard, and in the 300 years since his death he has inspired legends that have spanned books like Treasure Island, movies, and even theme park rides. Of course, like any legendary figure, Blackbeard is remembered today based more on myths than reality. People continue to let their imaginations go when it comes to Blackbeard, picturing a pirate who captured more booty than any other pirate, hid buried treasure, and lit his hair on fire before battle. People have long claimed that his ghost still haunts the Atlantic Ocean, and his contemporaries were so scared of him that they claimed to have seen his headless body swim around his pirate boat three times. The myths and legends surrounding Blackbeard tend to obscure the life he really lived, but his piracy was also notorious enough to capture headlines during his time. The British Crown put a higher price on his head than any other pirate of the era, and when an author writing under the pseudonym Charles Johnson wrote about Blackbeard in A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates, a legend was born.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new account explores the most notorious pirates in history and how their rise and fall can be traced back to a single pirate haven, Nassau. Angus Konstam, one of the world's leading pirate experts, has brought his 30 years of research to create the definitive book on the Golden Age of Piracy. Many of the privateers the British had used to prey on French and Spanish shipping during the War of the Spanish Succession turned to piracy. The pirates took over Nassau on the Bahamian island of New Providence and turned it into their own pirate haven, where shady merchants were happy to buy their plunder. It became the hub of a pirate network that included some of the most notorious pirates in history: Blackbeard, 'Calico Jack' Rackam, Charles Vane and Bartholomew Roberts. The growth of piracy led to a major surge in attacks in the Caribbean and along North America's Atlantic seaboard. With the fragile maritime economy of the Americas threatened with collapse, major ports were threatened and trade brought to a standstill, the British government finally declared war on the pirates. The Pirate Menace draws on extensive research, as well as a wide range of first-hand accounts, to produce a new history of the heyday of historical piracy.

En route she is kidnapped-a case of mistaken identity-by Captain Nathanael Blackthorne, the pirate captain. Accustomed to blood, musket and cannon, life aboard the pirate ship isn't the hell Cate expects. She is instantly drawn into Nathan's bloody rivalry against Lord Creswicke-the man who forced Nathan into piracy-and Commodore Harte, Creswicke's puppet. They are an "unholy alliance" of ambition and power, Nathan a rat terrier on their heels. The impending arrival of Creswicke's fiancé is too much temptation for revenge. This is a story of two scarred people, blinded by their defenses. It's the story of trust, or rather, the lack of. It's the story of a loss of faith and disbelief that Providence might ever smile again.

Book excerpt: In the first-ever Seven Seas history of the world's female buccaneers, Pirate Women: The Princesses, Prostitutes, and Privateers Who Ruled the Seven Seas tells the story of women, both real and legendary, who through the ages sailed alongside—and sometimes in command of—their male counterparts. These women came from all walks of life but had one thing in common: a desire for freedom. History has largely ignored these female swashbucklers, until now. Here are their stories, from ancient Norse princess Alfhild and warrior Rusla to Sayyida al-Hurra of the Barbary corsairs; from Grace O'Malley, who terrorized shipping operations around the British Isles during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I; to Cheng I Sao, who commanded a fleet of four hundred ships off China in the early nineteenth century. Author Laura Sook Duncombe also looks beyond the stories to the storytellers and mythmakers. What biases and agendas motivated them? What did they leave out? Pirate Women explores why and how these stories are told and passed down, and how history changes depending on who is recording it. It's the most comprehensive overview of women pirates in one volume and chock-full of swashbuckling adventures that pull these unique women from the shadows into the spotlight that they deserve.
