Book excerpt: This book provides an illuminating perspective on how lawyers operate in a society anxious to embrace democracy in this era of hope and optimism, yet still crippled by past attitudes, weak and ineffectual institutions, corruption, and the recrudescence of primordial ethnic sentiments, using Nigeria as a case study. The book compares and contrasts the central issues faced by lawyers all over the African continent, since the social pathologies that disfigure Nigeria are prevalent in most African nations. Despite these problems, the democratic impulse remains strong in the continent of Africa. Nearly all African countries put their faith in constitutional democracy despite its debasement by the political elites; increasingly they depend on law to help promote social equilibrium and secure constitutional democracy.

Book excerpt: "My intention [is] to provide a frank criticism of the British colonial legacies to countries which I have come to love and admire and a sincere unsycophantic tribute to those who are now struggling with the problems flowing from these legacies." In this book, an expanded version of The Oliver Wendell Holmes Lectures he delivered at Harvard University in 1966, Mr. Gower first looks at some of the legacies of colonialism inherited by those nations of Tropical Africa which recently gained independence from Britain: Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. These various legacies include arbitrary national boundaries imposed long before independence; British-style education, government, civil service, military forces, and police; respect for the rule of law (and a residual contempt for it as a result of colonial associations); underdeveloped and unbalanced economies; hostility toward the West, including American "dollar-imperialism," and a hypersensitivity to criticism from that quarter. Mr. Gower continues with an assessment of what has happened to these legacies since independence and what seems likely to happen to them in the next few decades. His central concern is the challenge thus implied for the indigenous legal professions, but his study has far wider implications. In conclusion Mr. Gower describes how the legal professions were organized at the time of independence in the various countries and what progress has been made in producing the kinds of lawyers needed to solve the urgent problems these countries face. He suggests what the United States can and should-and occasionally what it should not-do to help.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has brought into sharp focus the parts played and contributions made to the Legal Profession in Nigeria from Independence till today by Hairat Balogun. Hers has been a Life of service, driven by truth and a commitment to Justice. Service, Truth and Justice - three words - adherence to just one of them can define someone as a person of integrity and honour; and when all three are found in one person they set that person apart as an icon, a yardstick for her peers, and a model for the generation following after. As the first lady Attorney-General of the foremost Nigerian state i.e. Lagos State, during the military regime she exhibited, for the first time, obedience of the Executive arm of government to court orders in the celebrated case of Ojukwu vs Attorney General of Lagos State and others 1986 3 NWLR (part 26) 39 Court of Appeal. She thereby laid the foundation of the precedence of putting a stop to the disobedience of court orders by the Military Government dubbed as Executive Lawlessness. The contribution of the Author to the political history of this country was appreciated by her appointment as a member of "The Transition to Civil Rule Tribunal" in 1987 by the then Military Government. I commend this book to all cadres of people, lawyers, humanists, religious people of Christian and Muslim faith as they all will find a lesson or two to learn. I particularly recommend this book to our youths i.e. pupils of secondary schools, graduates of our universities (especially lawyers) and teacher training colleges who from this book will learn the importance of hard work, dedication, honesty and loyalty which are important virtues that are gradually being eroded from our society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria, the United States’ most important strategic partner in West Africa, is in grave trouble. While Nigerians often claim they are masters of dancing on the brink without falling off, the disastrous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, the radical Islamic insurrection Boko Haram, and escalating violence in the delta and the north may finally provide the impetus that pushes it into the abyss of state failure. In this thoroughly updated edition, John Campbellexplores Nigeria’s post-colonial history and presents a nuanced explanation of the events and conditions that have carried this complex, dynamic, and very troubled giant to the edge. Central to his analysis are the oil wealth, endemic corruption, and elite competition that have undermined Nigeria’s nascent democratic institutions and alienated an increasingly impoverished population. However, state failure is not inevitable, nor is it in the interest of the United States. Campbell provides concrete new policy options that would not only allow the United States to help Nigeria avoid state failure but also to play a positive role in Nigeria’s political, social, and economic development.

Book excerpt: This edited volume records the amazing transformations brought about by leaders in legal education and legal profession. It captures experiences and experiments in the governance of law schools and legal profession during the COVID-19 pandemic as case studies; ideas which helped in resilience and which could show the way forward; the psychological, philosophical, and sociological aspects of the transformation; and the spiritual and material sources of motivation of the leadership. The contributions are along the following themes --- The shifting idea of law school: systems and processes; The “new normal” in legal profession; Psychological, philosophical, and sociological aspects of transformation; Experiences from global regions and countries; Legal education and legal profession in a post-COVID world. Through these five themes, and the eighteen contributions, the volume seeks to answer questions like --- how the educational and professional leaders adapted to the circumstances by building a “new normal”? How and to what extent their own legal education and professional experiences informed their actions during the Pandemic? How they re-imagined ambitions and reordered systems and processes? What type of guidance and support they received from the state and regulatory bodies? How they guaranteed the well-being of students, faculty, and staff during the Pandemic and the transition? How they upheld professional values and ethics when contexts of their application collapsed?
