Book excerpt: Absorbing the Old with the New “The time is coming declares the L-rd, when I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel…I will put my laws in their minds and write it on their hearts” (Jeremiah 31:31-33). The New Covenant Prophecy tells the very personal, real-life story of a Jewish believer who believes that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Jewish Messiah. His fascinating background includes being born in London into a wealthy Jewish family, parental divorce, anti-Semitism, and a supernatural spiritual experience when a Voice told him that he was loved and would be used to minister to God’s people. Jews, Messianic Jews, Christians, and nonbelievers alike will be enthralled with the intriguing details of his life in England and the United States—not only what was going on spiritually but also his keen mind for business-building and entrepreneurship. Written from a Messianic perspective, the author shares his spiritual discoveries in sensitive yet exciting ways that reveal the Good News of Yeshua so Jewish people can better understand the New Covenant—and Gentile believers can better understand the Church’s reconnection to Israel in the last days.

Book excerpt: For those who live there, Earth is both paradise and prison, a place for people to live out their lives with no hope of leaving or knowledge of what exists beyond this world. Then on one otherwise uneventful day, two odd-looking men from another planet suddenly appear with an offer the citizens of Earth can't refuse: the power to travel into the unexplored frontiers of the universe. But first, the Earthlings must prove they can bring peace to their world and show love for their fellow man. At first, Earth's inhabitants are skeptical of their new friends but soon realize the magnitude of the gift these aliens have offered. They are given five years to end their wars and create an atmosphere of peace and social harmony needed to impress the union of worlds. While the world is filled with excitement, the Reverend Jimmy Jordan questions his faith in God, which leaves no room for the existence of life beyond Earth. He studies the Bible in earnest to strengthen his beliefs, and he discovers a startling secret concerning Earth's new friends, one that could have dire consequences for the planet and the people living on it.

Book excerpt: ADRIAN is handsome, brilliant, and devoted to serving others. Under the cool exterior, however, he is tormented and unfulfilled. Abandoned by his father and emotionally distant from his mother, he feels alone – adrift on campus - until he meets SAVION. With rhymes dripping from his lips like honey, Savion has just what Adrian needs: stability, maturity, and love. Although their friendship is filled with peaks and valleys, their relationship is threatened by Adrian’s biggest challenge: BETA CHI PHI. Finding the appeal of pledging his father’s fraternity irresistible, Adrian decides to take the plunge and pledge Beta Chi Phi in an attempt to fill the void in his heart, even after his relationship with Savion blossoms. Almost immediately, Adrian is thrust headlong into a world of mind games, controlled behavior, and strokes from the paddle--tempered with the brotherhood that bonds men in times of adversity. Adrian knows that he must keep his relationship with Savion a secret at all costs, for if his new-found family were to learn the truth, he may have to choose… The one he loves…or his brothers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to discuss John's references to Jesus' emotions in the light of the current debate regarding Johannine Christology. The Fourth Gospel refers to Jesus' love, joy, and zeal. At times it also portrays him as troubled, deeply moved, and in tears. Do these expressions of emotion underscore Jesus' humanity or his divinity? The study is set against the background of the emotions of God as found in earlier Jewish literature, as well as against that of the emotions of Jesus in the Synoptics and the remainder of the New Testament. Voorwinde argues that the covenant provides the most consistent perspective for viewing both the emotions of Yahweh in the Old Testament and the emotions of Jesus in the Gospels. The Johannine Jesus is found to fulfil the hitherto incompatible roles of covenant Lord and covenant sacrifice. Rather than being expressive only of his humanity Jesus' emotions are also found to underscore his divinity. This is due to the unique genius of this Gospel with its paradoxical presentation of Jesus whose divinity is manifested most eloquently in his weakness, suffering, and death. Only his tears at the grave of Lazarus can be explained as a human emotion pure and simple. All the other emotions, because of their strong connections to the cross, highlight both Jesus' humanity and divinity, albeit for various reasons and in highly nuanced ways. JSNTS 284>

Book excerpt: In The LORD Who Listens, Charles C. Helmer IV draws on Holy Scripture and the theology of Karl Barth to offer a theological intepretation of God's hearing. Prioritizing this neglected biblical theme, Helmer develops a theological grammar for speaking of God's hearing that maintains a strong creator-creature distinction and then proceeds to demonstrate the profound implications God's hearing has for the doctrines of anthropology, Christology and, thus, for understandings of the gospel. In contrast to passibilist-liberationist strategies, God's hearing is argued to furnish existentially and theologically superior resources for those who cry out to be heard by God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1780s and 1790s were a critical era for communities of color in the new United States of America. Even Thomas Jefferson observed that in the aftermath of the American Revolution, "the spirit of the master is abating, that of the slave rising from the dust." This book explores the means by which the very first Black and Indian authors rose up to transform their communities and the course of American literary history. It argues that the origins of modern African-American and American Indian literatures emerged at the revolutionary crossroads of religion and racial formation as early Black and Indian authors reinvented American evangelicalism and created new postslavery communities, new categories of racial identification, and new literary traditions. While shedding fresh light on the pioneering figures of African-American and Native American cultural history--including Samson Occom, Prince Hall, Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, and John Marrant--this work also explores a powerful set of little-known Black and Indian sermons, narratives, journals, and hymns. Chronicling the early American communities of color from the separatist Christian Indian settlement in upstate New York to the first African Lodge of Freemasons in Boston, it shows how eighteenth-century Black and Indian writers forever shaped the American experience of race and religion. American Lazarus offers a bold new vision of a foundational moment in American literature. It reveals the depth of early Black and Indian intellectual history and reassesses the political, literary, and cultural powers of religion in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Edition - Updated and Revised A Bible student reference A New Testament prophecy of a falling away from truth into apostasy and lawlessness, in the final generation before Jesus Christ returns in glory, is being fulfilled now and is shortly to end. Yet Christianity has overwhelmingly moved so far from its first century roots that it could not even recognise this – or that Christ’s return is therefore now almost upon us! How and why this is the case is here explained thoroughly and logically with many examples directly from the word of God. In God’s saving plan for the world, everyone must in time make a free will choice to become part of the ‘Israel of God’ in order to access eternal life in the kingdom of God. The route to take is the “strait and narrow” way (Mat 7:13-14) that very few have so far found, and it involves the biblical new and old covenants which both apply to this Israel. Embark on this voyage only if you are willing to: be challenged about some basic Christian preconceptions, be a serious open-minded Bible student, and trust what the Bible teaches - but remember that time is short. “What the Bible has taught me I see as both vital and urgent for our eternal salvation; yet I know of no church or individual theologian who teaches what this book deals with in any substantive way” “Be prepared for major challenges to your understanding just as God has challenged me.” “In the epistles, Paul refers to two Israels whom he calls Israel after the flesh (I Cor 10:18) and the Israel of God (Gal 6:16); I focus mainly on the latter (but I also explain an unexpected but critically important connection between them)” “Dependent on the teaching, nearly all Christian denominations either teach nothing at all on it or almost the opposite of what Scripture repeatedly showed me. Looking back, I find this absolutely staggering!” “Very few [Christians] understand that the new covenant also only applies to Israel (as I will clearly show).” “I no longer believe that the NT [New Testament] can be fully understood without this extra Israel dimension” “Had I felt I could deliver this in a more light-hearted way I would have done so, but its implications are too awesome and fundamental to our eternal life prospects for that”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have Jews reshaped their identities as Jews in the face of the radical newness called America? Julian Levinson explores the ways in which exposure to American literary culture -- in particular the visionary tradition identified with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman -- led American Jewish writers to a new understanding of themselves as Jews. Discussing the lives and work of writers such as Emma Lazarus, Mary Antin, Ludwig Lewisohn, Waldo Frank, Anzia Yezierska, I. J. Schwartz, Alfred Kazin, and Irving Howe, Levinson concludes that their interaction with American culture led them to improvise new and meaningful ways of being Jewish. In contrast to the often expressed view that the diaspora experience leads to assimilation, Exiles on Main Street traces an arc of return to Jewish identification and describes a vital and creative Jewish American literary culture.

Book excerpt: The man was on a mission and someone was going to get some news. Each person in the little cluster braced themselves in their own way; the message was for one of them. As the runner came around the last descending bend on Jordan's west bank, they could identify him as Benjamin, from the house of Heis, twenty-seven miles away, near Bethany. Benjamin is used to delivering messages, and in this case he has been hired by two sisters to find Jesus, and deliver their message that Lazarus is sick. But when Jesus sends him back with a return message, everyone, including Benjamin is surprised. Why would Jesus wait three days to come when the situation is so dire? The answer is in the miraculous raising of Lazarus after being four days dead. But his living proof of Jesus's divinity sparks an evil plot by the Pharisees to do away with not only Lazarus, but Jesus himself, and soon Lazarus and his whole family must embark on a journey they never anticipated. They will meet inspiring characters, learn of Jesus's love and provision, and discover the ultimate truths of life. Join author Mike and Dianne Heintzeman for an incredible odyssey of faith, hope, and love in Stonehouse: The War is Over.
