Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Moses In the Article which follows, a powerful argu ment is presented in support of the traditional belief of Jews and Christians, and, indeed, of all generations from the time of our Lord till about a hundred years ago, that the Five Books of our Bible, called the Pentateuch, are the Law of Moses. For these last hundred years, a school of criticism has prevailed in' the Universities of Germany and England, which denies this tra dition, and alleges that these five books are, in their present form, a compilation by Jewish scribes, after the Babylonian captivity, from writers so unknown that they can only be designated by letters, J., H., P., H., and so on, who wrote centuries after Moses. Nor is this the most important part of the critical theory. Such writers might tell the truth. But these writers and compilers together are said to have presented in the Pentateuch, 'to the Jewish people and the world, a radically false account of early Jewish history, and to have attributed to Moses legisla tion which came at a much later date. Voltaire once asked whether, if a sacred Book was found to state what was not true, it could be considered sacred. Strange to say, a large body of English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses and the Law: A Study of Pentateuch Problems The first chapter of the Book of Genesis narrates the creation of the universe and of the living and inanimate world in a story of work accomplished in six days. If the most rigorously literal interpretation be attached to the text, disregarding all considerations but the meaning of the individual words as they stand, the account appears to commit itself to three statements: (1) The world was created in six stages, the work of 'each being begun and completed within one day: And there was evening and there was morning, a second a third day.' (2) Each stage was comprehensive and the time allotted to it did not overlap with that of any other stage; (3) The six stages are placed in a definite order of succession in time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lex Mosaica: Or the Law of Moses and the Higher Criticism HE Higher Criticism has had its say in this country as well as on the Continents of Europe and America. Sporadic efforts have been already made by re sponsible writers to Show that the new position is either untenable or is fraught with greater difficulties than the traditional view. But' it occurred to the Editor that there was still room for a work which should put to a more systematic test the working of the recent hypotheses. We appeal to the same documents as our Opponents. We believe that our Opponents are equally with our selves desirous to arrive at truth. The critics have appealed to the development of events as recorded in the Old Testament in verification of their theories: we endeavour to Show that upon these theories the history is unworkable in any one of the centuries between the period of the great lawgiver and the completion of the Canon. He is in no way responsible for any additions of my own, which are always definitely marked off from his work by, at least, square brackets usually followed by the contracted word trans. For the Table of Contents here given, the division into chapters, the chapter-headings and Index, I am also responsible. The quotations from the Bible are given, usually, from the Revised Version. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses and Deuteronomy While I do not fear the ostracism of scientific opinion, yet I wish honestly to recognize the full force of the critical arguments. Let us then briefly examine some of the reasons why the critics would have us believe that Deuteronomy was not written until centuries after Moses. These are mainly threefold (1) Certain ex pressions which Moses could not have used; (2) certain laws, whose origin must be assigned to a much later period than that of the great lawgiver; (3) the absence of allusions to this book by the prophets of the eighth century. Of course there are several other grounds which are of subordinate importance, and for which there is no room in a brief and popular article. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law and Covenant: Being the Restoration of Two of the Books of Moses, Each in Two Version, and Designated Herein as the Siniatic Tora and the Book of the Covenant; According to Reconstructive Criticism The Law and the Covenant, is the same Which higher criticism relegates to its documents, known as the Book of the Covenant, the Words of the Covenant, the Book of Judgments, Which are found in Exodus; and the Laws of Holiness, which are found in Leviticus; and the Deu teronomic Code, Which is found in Deuteronomy. I leave it With every fair-minded reader to decide whether the three great Mosaic documents, Which I have restored and named the Tora of Moses, the Sinaitic Law, and the Book of the Covenant, giving each in two versions, are not rather to be accepted than the three documents supposed to be discovered by the higher critics and called by them the Prophetic Code, the Laws of Holi ness, and the Deuteronomic Code. The documents of reconstructive criticism are logical in arrangement, consistent as literary productions, and related to each other as an earlier to later codes, while the docu ments of higher criticism are Without any logical or der, inconsistent with each other, and as literary pro ductions must surely be classed as puerile productions because of the repetitions, inconsistencies, and incon gruous arrangements of their parts. Poythress explores Genesis through Deuteronomy, demonstrating how the sacrifices and traditions of the Hebrews graphically foreshadow Christ’s relationship with his people. Dr. Poythress also explains how the penalties of the law prefigure the destruction of sin and guilt through Jesus. -- Publisher's statement
