Book excerpt: This book, through the lens of interdisciplinary legal analysis, draws a subtle balance between bioethics and financial regulation, with the latter playing an unexpectedly crucial role in the way life may potentially be governed. The legal topic of human preservation or cryoconservation was initially developed in the United States in the case of Donaldson v. van de Kamp. More recently, the subject arose in Europe as a result of a decision of the High Court, Family Division, London. This new theme of cryoconservation has unfolded through multifaceted forms, including its impact on regulation. In an area that may, at least prima facie, be regarded as belonging to the traditional realm of medical law, the findings presented here suggest that its potential has strong economic implications. The work argues that it is necessary also to look at this subject from a more interdisciplinary perspective, drawing a fil rouge between two otherwise seemingly opposing areas of law: medical law and financial regulation. The legal framework draws on the Anglo-American, and the United Kingdom in particular, along with civil law analysis from Italy. The work will be of interest to researchers and academics in the areas of medical law, legal philosophy, financial law, property law and insurance law.

According to Ettinger, cryonic hibernation (experimental long-term suspended animation) of humans may provide a "door into summer" unlike any season previously known. Such patients (individuals and families in cryonic hibernation) may yet experience the transhuman condition. Ettinger argues for his belief in "the possibility of limitless life for our generation." We should become aware of the incorrect, distorted, and oversimplified ideas presented in the popular media about cryonics. He believes that the cool logic and scientific evidence he presents should lead us to forget the horror movies and urban legends and embrace great expectations.

But immortality projects have gained increasing legitimacy and power in the world of science and technology. With recent rapid advances in biology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, secular immortalists hope for and work toward a future without death. On Not Dying is an anthropological, historical, and philosophical exploration of immortality as a secular and scientific category. Based on an ethnography of immortalist communities—those who believe humans can extend their personal existence indefinitely through technological means—and an examination of other institutions involved at the end of life, Abou Farman argues that secular immortalism is an important site to explore the tensions inherent in secularism: how to accept death but extend life; knowing the future is open but your future is finite; that life has meaning but the universe is meaningless. As secularism denies a soul, an afterlife, and a cosmic purpose, conflicts arise around the relationship of mind and body, individual finitude and the infinity of time and the cosmos, and the purpose of life. Immortalism today, Farman argues, is shaped by these historical and culturally situated tensions. Immortalist projects go beyond extending life, confronting dualism and cosmic alienation by imagining (and producing) informatic selves separate from the biological body but connected to a cosmic unfolding. On Not Dying interrogates the social implications of technoscientific immortalism and raises important political questions. Whose life will be extended? Will these technologies be available to all, or will they reproduce racial and geopolitical hierarchies? As human life on earth is threatened in the Anthropocene, why should life be extended, and what will that prolonged existence look like?

Securitisation transactions have been identified in the literature among the main reasons for the 2007–2008 financial crisis, alongside derivative contracts. More than a decade later, the EU legislature passed in 2017 a legal framework comprehensively disciplining the area of securitisations in the EU. On such a background the main purpose of the book is to discuss and analyse, in a holistic way, both the rationale behind the securitisations as financial transactions and their main players (e.g. originators, SPVs and credit rating agencies) and their "ESG" (Environmental, Social and Governance) challenges, particularly the recent regulation passed in the EU during the 2020–2021 global pandemic. The goal of this legal analysis is to identify and clarify the entire legal process of securitisations, as a result of the new EU legislation, as well as duties, responsibilities and practices incumbent on the main players. Furthermore, the monograph is also concerned with the new challenges facing financial markets and their regulation: the new concept of sustainability and the development of technology. In this scenario, there is a blend of financial issues, new environmental challenges and, ultimately, the role human beings are expected to play, also from a social justice perspective. Adopting not just doctrinal methodology but also comparative (from a private law perspective) and interdisciplinary (regulatory and law and economics), the authors also include a discussion of the main literature which has blossomed over the last two decades on structured finance transactions, particularly the literature that unveiled, a decade ago, the concept of shadow banking.
