Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Creeds in Scotland: A Treatise on the Relations of Churches in Scotland Established and Not Established to the Civil Law This is not a book of Church law. It does not profess, that is, to give the internal or administrative law of any Church, as to its creed or otherwise. It is a book of the civil law of Scotland in its relation to the Church. In the present form its scope has been enlarged so as to embrace the whole relation of our jurisprudence to Churches as bodies, whether within or without establishment. It thus includes that solid block of constitutional decisions which before 1843 dealt with the Church's claim to independence within establishment, and fixed its relation to statute and the State. But it records too how the Courts, beginning in the eighteenth century with an attempt to ignore the Church outside, have been obliged to deal with it also, in connection with questions of reparation and questions of property, and on principles which are by no means yet settled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Creeds in Scotland a Treatise the Legal Relation of Churches in Scotland, Established and Not Established, to Their Doctrinal Confessions This is not a book of Church law, but of the civil law of Scotland; and of that law only in so far as it affects or controls Churches in the matter of their creed. Yet the subject is not a small or poor one. Hitherto Churches have made much of their doctrines, and Scottish Churches above others. And law has had much to do with both. Exactly three hundred years have passed since the Reformed Church was acknowledged by the nation in 1567; and our immobility in respect of doctrine during these centuries has been the subject of much unreasonable self-complacency, and much undeserved reproach. But the past is past. That an absolute immobility is to reign in the future, is what few wise men desire, and what no man, whether wise or foolish, expects. Download or read book The Creeds of Christendom written by Philip Schaff and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Schaff's The Creeds of Christendom is a massive set, originally published in three volumes and here reproduced across five volumes, cataloging and explaining the many different creeds from the myriad Christian denominations. The differences in belief between Calvinists, Lutherans, and Presbyterians, for example, can often be subtle, so a thorough examination of the particulars as well as an explanation for how those different beliefs result in a different worldview is necessary. Volume One: Part II covers: . the Catechism of Geneva AD 1546 and 1541 . the Reformed Confessions of France and Netherlands . the Reformed Confessions of Germany . the Reformed Confessions of Bohemia, Poland, and Hungary . the Anglican Articles of Religion . the Presbyterian Confessions of Scotland . the Westminster Standards . the Creeds of Modern Evangelical Denominations. (See Volume One: Part I for the Table of Contents for this volume.) Swiss theologian PHILIP SCHAFF (1819-1893) was educated in Germany and eventually came to the United States to teach at the German Reformed Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. He wrote a number of books and hymnals for children, including History of the Christian Church and The Creeds of the Evangelical Protestant Churches.
