Book excerpt: There is a law of healing so plain that even a child can understand it, so fundamental that the ablest mind has never yet thought through all the facts and phenomena of life that rest upon it. It is the purpose of this book to make this law plain. The greatest power in the world is the power of thought, for it is Creative Mind in action. Nothing exists that did not first exist in thought from the first sun that blazed only in the Mind of the Creator, to the last doll-dress fashioned by a childish hand. Science supports the fact that the first movement in nature can have come only from the application of an immaterial force or Will to the primary etheric particles otherwise in a perfect state of equilibrium. It must leave to metaphysics not only an explanation of the Will that moves but also the substance that is moved. This, then, it is the province of this book to show with all that it entails. Since an act of Will is an act of mind, we concern ourselves with the activity of a Creative Mind. Again since Mind acts creatively, there is a way in which it acts. We must also, therefore, teach the way. It is to teach this way that the Bible was written, that Jesus lived and taught. This way has been known for many centuries but has always been taught in terms of the understanding of the day in which the teacher lived. The Great Metaphysician taught largely in parables and oriental figures of speech. But He taught "the Way" and his followers were called the People of the Way.

Book excerpt: The incarnation of the divine oneness is the essence that dwells in the human soul - with whom one is closely associated. It is a huge deal and a remarkable metamorphosis that unfolds before all and sundry. People have arrived at a point in time and space when the pretense no longer burdens them to be someone they were never meant to be. That they have reached a stage where they no more require to sacrifice the anguish and suffering that come with being incarnated at this physical juncture of existence. The price has to be paid. Within the human fraternity, an incredible phenomenon is taking place. The misery and pain have been a constant threat. The concept of micro family is now coming to an end. The incarnation of self-judgment - the divine one of all time - into the very physical boundary is finally starting to occur. The Law of Divine Oneness is here. What a fantastic find! What a glorious splendor! What a spectacular event that is just getting started and is already showering down on humanity! The all-powerful divine oneness is now entering the world. The excellent resistance of incarnation itself is dominating the universe. The sheer enormity and uniqueness of the actual incarnation or manifestation can no longer keep the forces of light and affection from discovering reality. Eventually, the journey of the human body to develop into what it was meant for has began. The numerous untiring and freely abundant energies of the living bodies are getting exposed. It comprises physical and mental involvement nurturing and fostering the enormous task that is finally coming to fruition. The divine oneness of all time is now well-equipped to initiate the entire ethics into the vessels that have been created specifically for this purpose.

Rather than looking at treatises as shortcuts from 'law in books' to 'law in action', the essays in this collection ask what treatises can tell us about what troubled legal professionals at a given time, what motivated them to write what they did, and what they hoped to achieve. This book, then, is the first study of the legal treatise as a 'law book in action', an active text produced by individuals with ideas about what they wanted the law to be, not a mere stepping-stone to codes and other forms of legal writing, but a multifaceted genre of legal literature in its own right, practical and fanciful, dogmatic and ornamental in turn. This book will be of interest to legal scholars, lawyers and judges, as well as to anyone else with a scholarly interest in law in general, and legal history in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Why are atoms so small?' asks 'naive physicist' in Erwin Schrodinger's book 'What is Life? The Physical Aspect of the Living Cell'. 'The question is wrong' answers the author, 'the actual problem is why we are built of such an enormous number of these particles'. The idea that everything is built of atoms is quite an old one. It seems that l Democritus himself borrowed it from some obscure Phoenician source . The arguments for the existence of small indivisible units of matter were quite simple. 2 According to Lucretius observable matter would disappear by 'wear and tear' (the world exists for a sufficiently long, if not infinitely long time) unless there are some units which cannot be further split into parts. th However, in the middle of the 19 century any reference to the atomic structure of matter was considered among European physicists as a sign of extremely bad taste and provinciality. The hypothesis of the ancient Greeks (for Lucretius had translated Epicurean philosophy into Latin hexameters) was at that time seen as bringing nothing positive to exact science. The properties of gaseous, liquid and solid bodies, as well as the behaviour of heat and energy, were successfully described by the rapidly developing science of thermodynamics.

Book excerpt: In this book, Jennifer Moore studies the role and application of humanitarian law by considering the experiences of African countries that are emerging from civil wars. Moore first offers an overview of international law, including its essential vocabulary, and then describes four particular subfields of international law: international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal law, and international refugee law. After offering readers this important backdrop, Moore turns to practical mechanisms necessary to implement international humanitarian law, focusing specifically on the experiences of Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Burundi. This study of humanitarian law, despite its focus on Africa's experience, is important to conflict resolution and reconstruction throughout the world.

Book excerpt: Even stronger than the Law of Attraction, a law governs the conscious formation of reality. It is the Law of Inspired Action. It opens a secret that is virtually not a secret. Human beings are acting at the peak point of all material things. It is the level of spirit when one uses the Law of Inspired Action. This supreme level governs all other levels. People are not trying to create anything when they use this superior law. They are rather letting the universe create things through them. Individuals are simply collaborating with God to create something new. According to the Law of Inspired Action, God is the one who is operating through men. As a result, there is nothing left for men to do but to let almighty do everything through his devotees. It does not mean. However, people should refrain from taking action; it just implies they should not do those actions that their inner self does not drive. Individuals are pushing action when they try to do things that do not have inspirational traits. Non-doing action is the path of inspired action. It is allowing oneself to do such things that one wants to do with an open mind. When people are trying to materialize things and use the energy to fuel the building process, using the law of attraction alone can be challenging. When one believes he has to attract things, he implies that they exist outside the human boundary. However, everything one desires is already within him and is only waiting to be opened. All the things people desire will appear in optimal time when the path is pursued with universal guidance. When one follows the Law of Inspired Action, he will unconsciously employ the law of attraction to pull everything needed into the self environment at all times. It's because the universe has drawn a strategy for mankind, and if they follow it, they can line their activities with the divine flow of thoughts and events. People will discover that they are doing the right thing at the right moment and the right place. It happens with all of the opportunities and resources already in place. People just walk right in.

Book excerpt: The Rule of Law in Action in Democratic Athens examines how the Athenians attempted to enforce and apply the law when judging disputes in court. Recent scholarship has paid considerable attention to the practice and execution of Greek law. However, much of this work has left several flawed assumptions unchallenged, such as that Athenian law was primarily concerned with procedure; that the main task of enforcement lay in the hands of private citizens; that the Athenians used the courts not to uphold the law but to pursue personal feuds; and that the Athenian courts rendered ad hoc judgments and paid little attention to the letter of the law. Drawing on modern legal theory, the author examines the nature of "open texture" in Athenian law and reveals that the Athenians were much more sophisticated in their approach to law than many modern scholars have assumed, and thus breaks considerable new ground in the field. At the same time, the book studies the weaknesses of the Athenian legal system and how they contributed to Athens' defeat in the Peloponnesian War. By reexamining the available evidence, Edward Harris provides a much needed corrective to long-held views and places the Athenian administration of justice in its broad political and social context.

Book excerpt: Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

Book excerpt: John Henry Schlegel recovers a largely ignored aspect of American Legal Realism, a movement in legal thought in the 1920s and 1930s that sought to bring the modern notion of empirical science into the study and teaching of law. In this book, he explores individual Realist scholars' efforts to challenge the received notion that the study of law was primarily a matter of learning rules and how to manipulate them. He argues that empirical research was integral to Legal Realism, and he explores why this kind of research did not, finally, become a part of American law school curricula. Schlegel reviews the work of several prominent Realists but concentrates on the writings of Walter Wheeler Cook, Underhill Moore, and Charles E. Clark. He reveals how their interest in empirical research was a product of their personal and professional circumstances and demonstrates the influence of John Dewey's ideas on the expression of that interest. According to Schlegel, competing understandings of the role of empirical inquiry contributed to the slow decline of this kind of research by professors of law. Originally published in 1995.
