Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: July 27, 1911 The real Christian is not necessarily he who regularly each Sab bath dons his Sunday best and sallies forth with sober face and disapproving frown upon the world's follies, but he who each day can thank God that he lives, and prays to be of service to his fellow-men, helping and being helped, has found a nugget which will grow brighter with constant use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: June 15, 1911 N 0 man has spent his life in vain whose aim and ambition has been the betterment of himself. No fountain is so small but that heaven may be imaged in its bosom. Some years ago we met an old gentlemen who had been active in newspaper work in Salt Lake City during the early sixties, and who was well acquainted with President Brigham Young. After our introduction had been graciously acknowledged by the old gentleman, we began asking about the great man, who, under the guiding hand of Omnipotence, was so instrumental in directing the destinies of what was to become a mighty people, whose religion was to be heralded to all the nations of the world. He told us of his knowledge of the Mormons during those early days, of his intercourse with Brigham Young and of his impres sions of the residents of the territory of Utah. He was unstinted in his praise of the hardy pioneers and their fearlessness in overcoming the natural conditions which seemed to be against them. He said the language of many of them would have been a barrier, under any other circumstances, for it was with difficulty they were able to make themselves understood, for they came from several foreign countries. Without the leader they would all have perished, but with a boldness that, to many would have appeared terrifying, their dauntless leader wrested victory from the very jaws of death and under the guiding hand of Almighty God planted those people in the desert; and their fruit has been of the choicest variety and has done honor to the world and will yet be chosen from among men to standardize the mode of living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: August 31, 1911 Third, the Mormon people are not peasants or illiterate. Some of their forefathers may have been, but they are not. Their leaders are graduates of Harvard, Cornell, Michigan, or German universities, and some of their young men lead the world to-day in scholarship. Utah has a strong public school and university system; education and music are her pride. She has over five thousand college and university students. The chief charges against the Mormons have been polygamy, deception, bigotry, and the seeking of political power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: October 26, 1911 There is another difference, however, namely, that we believe in the divine calling of Joseph Smith. But what injury can this belief be to the world? We accord to the world the right to be lieve what and how they may, and ask the same right in return. We deny them the right to prevent us from believing as we please, so long as our beliefs do not interfere with the exercise of their religious rights on their part. What did this Joseph Smith teach Anything that will harm the world He taught God to men. He has revealed the Father and the Son to the modern world, as to their form and substance for the ideas concerning the Godhead given in the New Testament had become vague and mystical in the minds of men. He taught that Jesus was in the express image of His Father, that He was literally the Son of God, that He died for the sins of the world, and rose from the dead with the very body which He had in mortality and now sits enthroned on the right hand of the Father. Let me ask again what harm such teachings can do to mankind Nothing. It can do none. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: June 8, 1911 It must be plainly stated that it is not the business of the Watch Committee to discuss such opinions. For years the Mor mons have had nearly a hundred legally registered places of worship in this country. They have a constitutional right to worship among us, and to preach their doctrines. If they commit any crime, they can be punished in a lawful way; but, short of that, it is the duty of the authorities to protect them in the exercise of their rights. As a parting thought, President Young wrote in his diary: Our homes, gardens, orchards, farms, streets, mills, bridges, public halls, magnificent temple, and other public improvements we leave as a monument of our patriotism, industry, economy, uprightness of purpose, and integrity of heart, as a living testimony of the falsehoods and wickedness of those who charge us with disloyalty to the Constitution of our country, idleness, and dishonesty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: June 22, 1911 The true philosophy of the fall and man's redemption there from has not been revealed, so as to become plain and easy to com prehend from any human standpoint. If any seer or revelator should point out the true philosophy thereof, we might look for some of the most profound scholars of the age to at once attempt a comparison along the line of present advanced science and modern philosophy, and because they would fail to find - which they certainly would - anything that agreed with modern science, they would boldly - as did the serpent - insert something fully equivalent to the word not into their reply. Let me ask, would such a declaration, based upon such reliable scientific conclusions, invalidate in the least degree the declaration of an inspired revelator upon this or any other subject whatever, although such declarations may not be accompanied by any proof whatever? Trace the history of the giving of any oral revelation from the earliest period down to the present day, no matter to what it relates, it has seldom indeed been accompanied by any corrobora tive evidence. Such evidence, if given, followed afterwards. Allow me to suggest that this absence of evidence might be a test of our faith in the word of the Lord which we are required to exercise. Leaving out past history, to some of which we may incidentally refer, and coming down to our own day; we can profitably consider many of the announcements and declarations made by heavenly messengers and which the great majority of so-called enlightened mankind have refused to accept. Ninety years ago, a beardless youth of fourteen years - Joseph Smith, Jr. - made the startling declaration, I have seen God, who introduced me to His Son, our Savior, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him. Joseph accepted - without questioning their identity - and related, somewhat in detail, the instructions the Savior gave him at this time; also the appearance afterwards of other heavenly personages, giving their names, also their instructions to him and the bestowal by them subsequently upon him the divine authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: February 9, 1911 Redeemer, His Son Jesus Christ. So there is but one plan of redemption and salvation for the human family. That being so, in the justice of God, who is the very embodiment of that eternal principle, all His children must, at some time and in some place, become acquainted with that gospel, learn what it is and have the opportunity of receiving it and obeying it, or of rejecting it if they will - for the principle of free agency 'is an eternal and abiding principle. It exists in all intelligent beings, the sons and the daughters of the great God who has given them that privilege to choose light or darkness, truth or error, good or evil, to take which course they prefer. Although there are, of course, many influences surrounding them, either for good or for evil, to which they may yield themselves, and to which they may become subject, yet in them, inherent, God-given, God-planted, is the principle of free agency, the power to receive or to reject the truth; to live accord ing to light, or to walk in darkness. So, at some period in the history of all the sons and daughters of Adam's race, there must come a time when they can hear that which God wants them to do, and take their choice. Whether they be in the body or out of the body, they are the same persons; people are not changed, simply because they shuffle of this mortal coil. They are the same persons as they were before they came into the body, and will be the same when they pass out of the body. Every indi vidual soul Will preserve its own identity, worlds without end. So, I say, there is a grand and glorious work to be performed, and I do not expect to cease my exertions and labors when the time comes for me to depart hence. I shall go, I presume, as I have done ever since I have been in the Church, where I am sent, and try to do the work allotted to me, and to do it with my might, to put my powers and energies into it, and to perform such duties as are incumbent upon me to the extent of my abilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: October 12, 1911 Is there a man possessing reasoning powers who can believe that any one of these quibbles would ever have been thought of had it not been necessary to devise some means to save some theory from being destroyed by the obvious meaning of the Savior's language? While the kingdom was yet in prospect, Jesus taught the people by parables and figures; but after its establishment, figures gave place to facts, commands and promises. Jesus commands His apostles to preach the gospel to every creature, promising salva tion to those who would believe and obey it. He also promised them the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth and enable them to unerringly perform the work he had assigned them. When it came, they began to preach as it inspired them; people were cut to the heart and made to cry out, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Peter did not tell them to be born again, because the time for figures had passed; he, therefore, said to them, Repent, and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. (acts 2: Thus he told them plainly, without a figure, to do that which would translate them into the kingdom of God's dear Son, and produce the change of state indicated by the figurative language of Jesus as used in the con versation with Nicodemus when He said: Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. When Peter thus addressed them, they that gladly received his word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. N ow, are they born again? Surely, they are. When were they born again? Just when they did what Peter commanded them to do. Then, if they were born again when they were baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, will we not be born again when we do as they did'? And if it took this to introduce them into the kingdom of God then, will anything less do us now? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: July 6, 1911 Among sectarian writers may be mentioned Dr. Doddridge, who in his Family Expositor, writes on page 456: We cannot expect that the miracles of Paul's days should be renewed in ours. Again on page 848 in note e, he gives it as his opinion that as the power of working miracles was not absolutely confined to the apostles, so it might in some instances continue something longer in the church than their days, In commenting on the words, And these signs shall follow them that believe, as found in Mark this same writer asserts that the word believe in this place signifies something different from that of faith, which had in the preceding verse (verse 16) been required as indispensably neces sary to salvation. He does not appear to have assigned any reason for so strange an interpretation of the passage, nor do the words used by St. Mark warrant any such view as above expressed. Our Lord is stated by St. Mark in verse 16 to have said, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, and in verse 17 He is said to have immediately added, And these signs shall follow them that believe. The word believe in verse 17 can therefore have no other signification than the faith which in verse 16 was required for salvation. Another writer, the Rev. Albert Barnes, in his commentaries on the gospels, holds the view that it was the apostles and others in the primitive age only who were endowed with power to per form miracles. As he admits, however, that the signs following, mentioned in Mark were signs that God was with His ser vants, and had sent them forth to preach, it is strange that this writer should practically claim that preachers of the gospel in this day and age of the world no longer require that same divine wit ness to their labors which the servants of the Lord enjoyed so fully in primitive times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: June 29, 1911 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. We believe in the home and that it must be kept pure. Marriage with us is a covenant entered into for all time and for all eternity. We are true to our wives and steadfast in our fidelity to them and to our children. For myself - and it may sound strangely to you - that means that I believe in being true to five wives, who are loving, loyal, contented and happy mothers. They have been my wives for from over twenty-seven years to more than forty years. They have looked up and been true to me through all these years, and I have held my love and duty to them above all things else; my love for them, my conscience and my manhood would not allow it to be otherwise. In England individuals have maliciously misrepresented us, as they have done in the United States and at home. They have said that we seek to win women and girls from their homes to come and live among us here. They have said, for example, that eight hundred such leave England every month, and by the time this lying report reaches America it is made to read that eight hundred women leave England every week. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: February 23, 1911 The missionary methods Of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter day Saints are open and above board. There is in them nothing to hide or cover up. The missionaries have a simple, gospel message to deliver that conforms in all respects both as to doc trine and organization, with the gospel as set forth in the New Testament Of the Bible. They sincerely believe that they are under a binding moral obligation to declare this message of truth and salvation to all nations; but the only avenues through which they can reach the people are by public hall meetings, street preaching, door to door tracting, and the press, when Opportunity Offers. Strict order and decorum characterize the Latter-day Saints' hall meetings, and order is maintained at the street meetings so far as circumstances and the usual conditions of noise and con fusion in the Open air will admit. The tracts treat gospel principles exclusively, and are handed to people at their homes in the spirit of courtesy and friendliness, and with a pure desire to do good.
