Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin Hymn-Writers and Their Hymns Some months before the death of my true hearted friend, Rev. S. W. Duffield, he wrote to express his wish that I should complete this work, if he did not live to finish it. As I was not aware how grave, and even hopeless, was his illness, I did not feel that I was undertaking a serious responsibility in assenting to his wish. But his untimely death brought to me the duty of discharging a wish which "the emphasis of death" made imperative. In our conferences over the book and its subject, which we had had for three years past, I had come to appreciate Mr. Duffield's ideas as to its form and content, and read with much interest his preliminary studies in the Christian Intelligencer, the Sunday-School Times, and the New Englander. On coming into possession of his manuscript and notes, I found that the greater part of the book had been carried almost to the point of readiness for the printer, although several chapters had not been written and all needed careful revision. I have revised throughout the chapters Mr. Duffield left, but in doing so I have been embarrassed by the very vitality and personal quality in Mr. Duffield's style. He reminds one of what Archdeacon Hare says of the freshness and living force in a page of Luther's. This has constrained me to leave intact many a phrase or expression I should not have used, but which was natural and even inevitable in him. It is my hope that I have not sacrificed this admirable quality of his writing to any pedantry of judgment. The chapters on Pope Damasus (Chapter IV.) I have rewritten throughout. That on Bernard of Cluny I have rearranged, but without much alteration. That on Thomas of Celano I have re-written to the top of page 252. That on Hermann of Reichenau I should have liked to rewrite; but as I dissented from some of its arguments, I feared to more than retouch it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns and Other Poetry of the Latin Church Corolla Hymnorum, while countless treasures te main to exercise the skill and taste of translators, and to testify to the piety and scriptural knowledge of the old Hymn-writers. I do not, therefore, apologise for attempting to render these Hymns in our mother tongue - success is another matter. The originals are of a studied simplicity, and this would be lost by turning them into florid or sensational verse. I have tried to give their meaning and spirit faithfully, so clothing them in an English dress that they might again appear, so far as I could effect this, as originals. I humbly hope that my endeavour may conduce, in however small a degree, to the glory of God and the good of His Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first mention of Christian Latin hymns by a known author occurs in the writings of St. Jerome who states that Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers (c. 310-366), a noted author of commentaries and theological works, wrote a Liber Hymnorum. This collection has never been recovered in its entirety. Hilary’s priority as a hymn writer is attested by Isidore of Seville (d. 636) who says: Hilary, however, Bishop of Poitiers in Gaul, a man of unusual eloquence, was the first prominent hymn writer. More important than his prior claim is the motive which actuated him, the defense of the Trinitarian doctrine, to which he was aroused by his controversy with the Arians. A period of four years as an exile in Phrygia for which his theological opponents were responsible, made him familiar with the use of hymns in the oriental church to promote the Arian heresy. Hilary wrested a sword, so to speak, from his adversaries and carried to the west the hymn, now a weapon of the orthodox. His authentic extant hymns, three in number, must have been a part of the Liber Hymnorum. Ante saecula qui manens, “O Thou who dost exist before time,” is a hymn of seventy verses in honor of the Trinity; Fefellit saevam verbum factum te, caro, “The Incarnate Word hath deceived thee (Death)” is an Easter hymn; and Adae carnis gloriosae, “In the person of the Heavenly Adam” is a hymn on the theme of the temptation of Jesus. They are ponderous in style and expression and perhaps too lengthy for congregational use since they were destined to be superseded. In addition to these the hymn Hymnum dicat turba fratrum, “Let your hymn be sung, ye faithful,” has been most persistently associated with Hilary’s name. The earliest text occurs in a seventh century manuscript. It is a metrical version of the life of Jesus in seventy-four lines, written in the same meter as that of Adae carnis gloriosae.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Hymns in English Verse: With Short Biographical Sketches of Their Authors One of the first fruits of the Spirit is joy, and joy is naturally expressed in song. James (v. 13) says, Is any merry? Let him sing psalms. Paul (eph. V. 19) urges Christians to sing and make melody in their hearts to the Lord, and exhorts them (eph. V. 19, Col. Iii. 16) to help one another when they come to gether for worship, by psalms and hymns and spir itual songs. At midnight, in prison, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God (acts xvi. The worship of the church from the begin ning included the singing both of psalms used in the Jewish ritual and also of hymns that were peculiar to the Christian service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Hymns: Translations of the Verses of the Most Notable Latin Writers of the Early and Middle Ages Immediately upon the appearance of that poem in print, the author was urged by scholarly friends, both clerical and lay, lovers, like himself, of the fine old church songs, to try his hand at others, especially those used for liturgical purposes and found in the Breviary and Missal. The more of these translations that appeared, the more popular they seemed to become. The very act of translating afforded a singular pleas ure and exhilaration of spirit. In a short time the number of English renderings on the author's hands became so great, and the requests of friends to collect them in a volume, so urgent, that the present work is the result.
