Book excerpt: There is nothing sacrosanct about bike repair. Its pursuit only requires the will to learn. At their finest hours, bikes exist on a level above mere machines, and there's no reason why the joy should end once the ride is over. Bicycle!, written by a die-hard working bicycle mechanic and former courier, offers up everything you need to know to feed and care for your ride, with a bit of bike-versus-car insight on the side. This book cuts through the obtuse techno-speak like a fixed gear through the gridlock, conveying maintenance clarity with humor and radicalism, all the while categorically denying mechanistry's supposed dreariness. Bicycle! encourages any and all to learn the real thrills about autonomy in transportation, not because we have to, but because we want to. With detailed descriptions of all the most useful maintenance tasks and repair scenarios, clearly illustrated, this guide serves the need for a serious rider's manual. Professional bicycle workers - messengers, mechanics, pedi-cab drivers - as well as bicycle commuters have been waiting for this very book.

Book Synopsis Super Lateral Thinking Puzzles by : Paul Sloane
Download or read book Super Lateral Thinking Puzzles written by Paul Sloane and published by Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stand out from the pack--don't think conventionally, think laterally! And, you can start developing well-honed mental skills with more than 80 braintwisting puzzles that test your creativity and smarts. At first it might not seem as if there's enough information to solve them, but if you just persist, you'll come up with the logical answers. Some of the conundrums come from real life: try to figure out how the Greek playwright Aeschylus could have been killed by a tortoise or how the truth about Mary Queen of Scots' baldness was finally revealed. Or, give this a shot: A runner was awarded a prize for winning a marathon. But, the judges disqualified him when they saw a picture of his wristwatch. Why? Happy puzzling! Answer: A picture of the runner early in the race showed him wearing his watch on his right wrist. When he crossed the finishing line it was on his left wrist. The judges investigated and found that one man had run the first half and his identical twin brother ran the second half of the race.
Download or read book Truth in Aquinas written by John Milbank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provocative and sophisticated, Truth in Aquinas is a fascinating re-evaluation of a key area - truth - in the work of Thomas Aquinas. John Milbank and Catherine Pickstock's provocative but strongly argued position is that many of the received views of Aquinas as philosopher and theologian are wrong. This compelling and controversial work builds on the amazing reception of Radical Orthodoxy (Routledge, 1999).
Book Synopsis Phenomenology, Transversality, and World Philosophy by : Hwa Yol Jung
Download or read book Phenomenology, Transversality, and World Philosophy written by Hwa Yol Jung and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenomenology, Transversality, and World Philosophy explores the concept of world philosophy (Weltphilosophie) to take into account the reality of today’s multicultural and globalizing world. It challenges the assumption that the particular in the West is universalizable, but the particular in the non-West is particular forever, using the concept of transversality to construct an intercontinental philosophy. In the tradition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s world literature (Weltliteratur), and in dialogue with work in ethics and political philosophy, Hwa Yol Jung examines the roles that phenomenology and transversality play in constructing world philosophy.
Book Synopsis Mestizo Democracy by : John Francis Burke
Download or read book Mestizo Democracy written by John Francis Burke and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation It can come as no surprise that the ethnic makeup of the American population is rapidly changing. In this volume, John Francis Burke offers a "mestizo" theory of democracy and traces its implications for public policy. Mestizo, meaning "mixture, " is a term from the Mexican socio-political experience. It represents a blend of indigenous, African, and Spanish genes and cultures in Latin America. This mixture is not a "melting pot" experience; rather, the influences of the different cultures remain identifiable but influence each other in dynamic ways. Burke analyzes democratic theory and multiculturalism to develop a model for cultivating a community that can deal effectively with its cultural diversity. He applies this model to official language(s), voting and participation, equal employment opportunity, housing, and free trade. Burke concludes that in the United States we are becoming mestizo whether we know it or not and whether we like it or not. By embracing this, we can forge a future together that will be greater than the sum of its parts

Book Synopsis For Robert Cooper by : Martin Parker
Download or read book For Robert Cooper written by Martin Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Cooper, who died in 2013, was the leading theorist of organization working in England over the past few decades. Describing himself as a ‘social philosopher,’ he was one of the first writers to introduce post-structuralist and post-modern thought into theories of organization but was always reluctant to reduce what he did to being part of ‘Management.’ Instead, he concentrated on thinking about organizations and organizing, working with ideas about entity and process views of organizations, and also the dualisms of organization/environment, organization/disorganization, and concentrating particularly on ideas of the boundary or seam which divides and conjoins. He wrote about, and was influenced by systems theory and post-structuralist philosophy, particularly Whitehead, Bateson, Deleuze, Derrida, Foucault and Simmel. Cooper has already been the subject of much commentary but much of his work is not well known, and it deserves a wider readership. The purpose of this collection is to gather together a body of essays which are widely dispersed in journals and edited collections. This is a repository of pieces and extracts which stand the test of time, and scholars will benefit from a collection which pulls together some of his most influential work. The collection also contains two essays, one biographical and one intellectual, about Cooper and his work.
