Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics constitutes the most accurate and comprehensive known description of the fundamental building blocks of the universe. However, overwhelming evidence suggests that the theory is incomplete and that new physics may be hiding at the TeV-scale. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN probes these high-energy scales, opening a potential gateway to access physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Long-lived particles (LLPs) arise in many promising BSM theories, but they remain weakly constrained at the LHC. This thesis presents a novel search for displaced and delayed diphoton and dielectron vertices originating from the decay of a neutral LLP. The analysis uses the full LHC Run 2 dataset of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The search harnesses the capabilities of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeter to precisely measure the displacement and delay of the final state electromagnetic objects.

Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 268 presents an overview of the most recent observational and theoretical research on the formation and evolution of light elements in the Universe: H, He, Li, Be, B, and their isotopes. Astrophysicists from a variety of subfields discuss recent developments that will improve our understanding of the light elements and provide important clues to stellar and galactic evolution, Big Bang nucleosynthesis, and cosmology. Striking observational progress has been achieved recently through the advent of next generation ground- and space-based telescopes, such as the cosmic microwave background experiments that allow the accurate determination of the baryon density of the Universe. New theoretical breakthroughs in describing stellar interiors and the chemical evolution of complex systems and the remaining challenges in this field are also addressed. This critical review is a useful resource for all those interested in the chemical evolution of the Universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If youve ever wondered if a particle can have weight but no mass, why the neutron is neutral or why the electrona negative particledoesnt fly apart when all of its inner parts are presumably negative also, then this book is for you. John R. Holt chases the holy grail of sciencea theory that explains everythingin this ambitious work that draws upon particle physics, theoretical physics, cosmology, and related disciplines. Combining empirical facts with reasonable speculation, he presents a simple theory in an easy-to-understand format that can be applied to the whole universe. This theory presents a scheme using only one material substance which, under the influence of only one force, produces all we see and interact with in the world around us. The theory he presentsonce understoodwill put physics as a whole and our understanding of reality on a new path. Explore complicated ideas, and challenge your biases, superstitions, and misconceptions with Holts Theory of Everything.

Book excerpt: This new book addresses a gap in the literature, offering an explanation of the aurora's causes, how the occurrence of major events may now be predicted, and how amateur observers can go about recording displays. This is the first serious book about aurora written for practical but non-professional observers. It provides a concise accessible description of the various auroral forms and how to record them, illustrated with color images of recent displays. It contains details of 'Space Weather' forecasting websites, how to interpret and use the information given on these, and how to anticipate auroral activity.

Book excerpt: This unique volume by two renowned astrophotographers unveils the science and history behind 100 of the most significant astronomical images of all time. The authors have carefully selected their list of images from across time and technology to bring to the reader the most relevant photographic images spanning all eras of modern astronomical history. Based on scientific evidence today we have a basic notion of how Earth and the universe came to be. The road to this knowledge was paved with 175 years of astronomical images acquired by the coupling of two revolutionary technologies – the camera and telescope. With ingenuity and determination humankind would quickly embrace these technologies to tell the story of the cosmos and unravel its mysteries. This book presents in pictures and words a photographic chronology of our aspiration to understand the universe. From the first fledgling attempts to photograph the Moon, planets, and stars to the marvels of orbiting observatories that record the cosmos at energies beyond the range of human vision, astronomers have always relied on images to "break through" to the next level of understanding. A subset of these breakthrough images has profound significance in documenting some of the greatest milestones in modern astronomy.

Book excerpt: This annual SUSY conference has become the world's largest international meeting devolted to new ideas in high energy physics. The main subject of the conference is theoretical and phenomenological aspects of supersymmetric theories, and dark matter and dark energy, and other comological connections. New, interesting results from various experimental groups are increasingly presented at the conference as well. With roughly 200 plenary and parallel presentations, SUSY08 will likely deliver energy and enthusiasm of both theorists and experimentalists who are searching the frontier of high energy physics.
