Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Stand of the Old Siberia His brief narrative of The Last Stand Tof the Old Siberia is based on observa tions made during a geological and geograph ical reconnaissance by the author through Siberia in 1901, just after the Boxer war in China and adjoining parts of Siberia. The reason that the narrative was not published many years ago is that the region was still the old-time Siberia, for the Great Siberian Rail way was only partly completed and had not yet materially changed the people or their conditions. This old-time Siberia had been much described, much discussed, and more often than not, much and unjustly abused; enough had been said about it for that time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Siberia Notwithstanding the fact that the world is now passing through a phase of eager geographical exploration and dis covery to which no period - not even the Elizabethan affords a parallel, there are still countries whither the traveller, be he naturalist, geographer, or sportsman, but rarely directs his steps. Siberia is one of them. The map of Africa is becoming almost as crowded with place-names as that of France, and we are steadily filling in the Arctic and even the Antarctic coast-lines, but the Land of the Tundra remains almost as unknown to Englishmen as it was in the days of Cochrane, when, eighty years ago, he set him self the astounding task of walking, baggageless and alone, from Dieppe to Kamschatka. The Treaty of Nertchinsk is a couple of centuries old, and the Russian conquerors had reached the furthest limits of the vast land even earlier, but no one now thinks of following in their footsteps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Siberia The journey through Western and Central Siberia and the adjacent parts of Mongolia, of which some account is given in the following pages, was undertaken in response to the invitation of my friends, Messrs Douglas Carruthers and J. H. Miller, who were engaged in the scientific exploration of those regions. They were mainly interested in the physical characteristics of the Siberian-Mongolian borderland, and the geographical results of their investigations were communicated to the Royal Geographical Society by Mr Carruthers in March 1912. My own interests, on the other hand, had long been mainly associated with social and economic questions, and my special studies had been not a little stimulated by a visit to Canada some years before. The prospect was therefore particularly pleasing, and the opportunity offered of joining such an expedition to a little-known and rapidly changing country was not to be missed. I was not disappointed in my expectations. For the greater part of a year I was living in the midst of a new society passing through a fascinating phase of development. Siberia is now where Canada was a generation ago. Just as the English settler in Canada has become a Canadian, so the Russian settler in Siberia has become a Siberian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “melodious” mix of music, history, and travelogue “reveals a story inextricably linked to the drama of Russia itself . . . These pages sing like a symphony.” —The Wall Street Journal Siberia’s story is traditionally one of exiles, penal colonies, and unmarked graves. Yet there is another tale to tell. Dotted throughout this remote land are pianos—grand instruments created during the boom years of the nineteenth century, as well as humble Soviet-made uprights that found their way into equally modest homes. They tell the story of how, ever since entering Russian culture under the westernizing influence of Catherine the Great, piano music has run through the country like blood. How these pianos traveled into this snowbound wilderness in the first place is testament to noble acts of fortitude by governors, adventurers, and exiles. Siberian pianos have accomplished extraordinary feats, from the instrument that Maria Volkonsky, wife of an exiled Decembrist revolutionary, used to spread music east of the Urals, to those that brought reprieve to the Soviet Gulag. That these instruments might still exist in such a hostile landscape is remarkable. That they are still capable of making music in far-flung villages is nothing less than a miracle. The Lost Pianos of Siberia follows Roberts on a three-year adventure as she tracks a number of instruments to find one whose history is definitively Siberian. Her journey reveals a desolate land inhabited by wild tigers and deeply shaped by its dark history, yet one that is also profoundly beautiful—and peppered with pianos. “An elegant and nuanced journey through literature, through history, through music, murder and incarceration and revolution, through snow and ice and remoteness, to discover the human face of Siberia. I loved this book.” —Paul Theroux

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel narrates the story of Micheaux, who bears the same name as its famous author, and his struggles to become a successful homesteader in Dakota. Largely autobiographical, the novel provides an insight into the lesser known history of the American Wild West where even the Black pioneers were surviving and fighting against the tough and unforgiving terrain. Read on! Excerpt: "I was born twenty-nine years ago near the Ohio River, about forty miles above Cairo, the fourth son and fifth child of a family of thirteen, by the name of Devereaux—which, of course, is not my name but we will call it that for this sketch. It is a peculiar name that ends with an "eaux," however, and is considered an odd name for a colored man to have, unless he is from Louisiana where the French crossed with the Indians and slaves, causing many Louisiana negroes to have the French names and many speak the French language also. My father, however, came from Kentucky and inherited the name from his father who was sold off into Texas during the slavery period and is said to be living there today. He was a farmer and owned eighty acres of land and was, therefore, considered fairly "well-to-do," that is, for a colored man. The county in which we lived bordered on the river some twenty miles, and took its name from an old fort that used to do a little cannonading for the Federal forces back in the Civil War..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a decade-long collaboration between Japan and Russia, this important volume presents the first major synthesis of current knowledge on the ecophysiology of the coniferous forests growing on permafrost at high latitudes. It presents ecological data for a region long inaccessible to most scientists, and raises important questions about the global carbon balance as these systems are affected by the changing climate. Making up around 20% of the entire boreal forests of the northern hemisphere, these ‘permafrost forest ecosystems’ are subject to particular constraints in terms of temperature, nutrient availability, and root space, creating exceptional ecosystem characteristics not known elsewhere. This authoritative text explores their diversity, structure, dynamics and physiology. It provides a comparison of these forests in relation to boreal forests elsewhere, and concludes with an assessment of the potential responses of this unique biome to climate change. The book will be invaluable to advanced students and researchers interested in boreal vegetation, forest ecology, silviculture and forest soils, as well as to researchers into climate change and the global carbon balance.
