Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm just a high school biology teacher in southern California. I wrote a paper on bio-toxins in college. Nine months ago the government asked me to be the 'ordinary citizen' on a seven-member panel. For three days we brainstormed potential homegrown terrorist scenarios. That was all. I thought. "We're the only two left," John Ryder said, no emotion in his voice. "The others have been assassinated. If you want to live, you'll have to come with me." Terrorists have adopted one of the team's scenarios, and if they're successful, it could claim a half-million lives. Samantha Waters and ex-Navy SEAL John Ryder are caught in the middle of a dark conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of power. They have to rely on each other to survive--and to somehow stop the nightmare scenario they imagined before it becomes a terrifying reality. Marcos Gabriel is an award-winning writer whose body of work includes novels, plays, screenplays, and television productions. Working in Los Angeles as the Creative Director of an entertainment advertising agency, he has crafted television commercials and theatrical trailers for many blockbuster and critically-acclaimed Hollywood films. Marcos lives in Southern California with his wife and two children. Marcos Gabriel is a member of the International Thriller Writers Association.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case-based reasoning is a methodology with a long tradition in artificial intelligence that brings together reasoning and machine learning techniques to solve problems based on past experiences or cases. Given a problem to be solved, reasoning involves the use of methods to retrieve similar past cases in order to reuse their solution for the problem at hand. Once the problem has been solved, learning methods can be applied to improve the knowledge based on past experiences. In spite of being a broad methodology applied in industry and services, case-based reasoning has often been forgotten in both artificial intelligence and machine learning books. The aim of this book is to present a concise introduction to case-based reasoning providing the essential building blocks for the designing of case-based reasoning systems, as well as to bring together the main research lines in this field to encourage students to solve current CBR challenges.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a rapidly expanding economy many changes are taking place in India today. The business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, which assumes the continuation of current trends of key water demand drivers, will meet the future food demand. However, it leads to a severe regional water crisis by 2050, where many river basins will reach closure, will be physically water-scarce and will have regions with severely overexploited groundwater resources. While the alternative scenarios of water demand show both optimistic and pessimistic water futures, the scenario with additional productivity growth is the most optimistic, with significant scope for reducing future water demand.

Book excerpt: Rural areas need to fulfil a large variety of functions and to accommodate many activities. The complexity of the problems, limited funds, and the almost irreversible character of some interventions result in a compelling need to evaluate ex ante the effects of alternative solutions for designation of land, for measures to develop infrastructure, and for soil and water management. Scenario studies are undertaken to help manage the complexity, to place bounds on uncertainties, and to create new visions. After an overview of the nature, variety and scope of scenario studies, the book illuminates various European examples and reviews, under the following headings: regional soil and water management; nature development and landscape quality; rural planning and the future of regions.

Book excerpt: The security issues set by the global digitization of our society have had, and will continue to have, a crucial impact at all levels of our social organization, including, just to mention a few, privacy, economics, environmental policies, national sovereignty, medical environments. The importance of the collaborations in the various ?elds of computer s- ence to solve these problems linked with other sciences and techniques is clearly recognized. Moreover, the collaborative work to bridge the formal theory and practical applications becomes increasingly important and useful. In this context, and since France and Japan have strong academic and ind- trial backgrounds in the theory and practice of the scienti?c challenges set by this digitized world, in 2005 we started a formal French–Japanese collaboration and workshop series on computer security. The three ?rst editions of these French–Japanese Computer Security wo- shops in Tokyo, September 5–7, 2005 and December 4–5, 2006 and in Nancy, March 13–14, 2008 were very fruitful and were accompanied by several imp- tant research exchanges between France and Japan. Because of this success, we launched a call for papers dedicated to computer security from it’s foundation to practice, with the goal of gathering together ?nal versions of the rich set of papers and ideas presented at the workshops, yet opening the call to everyone interested in contributing in this context. This v- ume presents the selection of papers arising from this call and this international collaboration.

This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, freshwater ecosystems are considered to be under severe threat from human pressure and climate change (Vörösmarty et al., 2010). Malmqvist and Rundle (2002) suggest that running water is the most impacted upon ecosystem on Earth due to being surrounded by dense human settlements and exploited for domestic and industrial water supply, irrigation, electricity generation and waste disposal. For example, the progressive over-exploitation of surface water resources for irrigation and urban uses in the Colorado River Basin has resulted most years in no runoff reaching the river’s delta (Gleick, 2003) [...]. Hereafter, natural and anthropogenic driving forces will be referred to as global and regional driving forces, respectively. The future effects of these forces up to the 2050s will be assessed in quantitative scenarios implemented in a hydrological model. It is believed that using this nomenclature (i.e. global and regional instead of natural and anthropogenic) better reflects considered environmental stressors, since global-scale driving forces will include not only climatic change but also changes in CO2, atmospheric carbon dioxide and plant physiological parameters, whereas regional-scale driving forces will include changes in land use, agriculture development and agricultural water management. Hence, the difference is that the first group of driving forces acts globally and independently on the study area, whereas the second group includes factors that are specific to the study area. Furthermore, in order to expand on the title of this thesis, impacts in the present study will be assessed not only on the flow regime as such, but also on its ecological functions, i.e. on the environmental flow regime. This is motivated mainly by the semi-natural character of the study area, that is unique in Poland and in Europe, but it also underlines the novelty of this thesis, as going beyond the pure impacts on the flow regime in a scenario-modelling framework is rare in hydrological science, if achieved at all.

Book excerpt: Motion Simulation and Mechanism Design with SolidWorks Motion 2011 is written to help you become familiar with SolidWorks Motion, an add-on module of the SolidWorks software family. This book covers the basic concepts and frequently used commands required to advance readers from a novice to intermediate level in using SolidWorks Motion. SolidWorks Motion allows you to use solid models created in SolidWorks to simulate and visualize mechanism motion and performance. Using SolidWorks Motion early in the product development stage could prevent costly redesign due to design defects found in the physical testing phase. Therefore, using SolidWorks Motion contributes to a more cost effective, reliable, and efficient product design process. Basic concepts discussed in this book include model generation, such as creating assembly mates for proper motion; carrying out simulation and animation; and visualizing simulation results, such as graphs and spreadsheet data. These concepts are introduced using simple, yet realistic examples. Verifying the results obtained from the computer simulation is extremely important. One of the unique features of this book is the incorporation of theoretical discussions for kinematic and dynamic analyses in conjunction with the simulation results obtained using SolidWorks Motion. Verifying the simulation results will increase your confidence in using the software and prevent you from being fooled by erroneous simulations.
