Book excerpt: This is the story about an Australian salvage pirate, who, in the late 1960s, accidentally discovered that a shipwreck in Rabaul harbour, New Guinea, is one of the infamous disguised refinery ships that the Japanese used in the Pacific region during WW2 to legalise their plundered, precious metals.The story details life onboard a small ship for the skipper, his crew, and his vivacious blond 'partner' in the years before 'social correctness'. It highlights many exciting places and people of the Pacific, the fun, the sex, and the adventure. The salvage was fraught with danger. The shipwreck is deep, and the diving equipment primitive, compared to modern times. The salvage required penetration inside the dark recesses, where copper wire dangled like spider webs, waiting to snare the unwary diver. Dangerous and unstable munitions that were ready to explode at a touch. And the constant threat of nitrogen narcosis or the bends, and, of course, the ever-present danger of sharks.This salvage itself was illegal, and therefore, had to be secretive. There was the need to keep 'nosey' rivals away from the wreck. This included simple subterfuge and even more extreme measures, such as explosive booby traps, broken legs, and even the use of a huge Japanese WW2 depth charge to cripple a competitor. The tale recounts the amazing removal of the safes from the wreck. It describes the difficulty in opening them, coupled with the horrifying death of a dive crew member. Then, with success within their reach, and their horde of gold bullion, silver, and gems all safely hidden onboard, they discover that it is illegal to own bullion in Australia. Ultimately, they locate cash buyers in the Solomons and Fiji. To complete that deal, however, they need to take an exciting cruise through some of the remotest parts of the Pacific to make the delivery. Eventually, the sale is successfully concluded, but in the end, the skipper and crew leave Fiji without the boat or the skipper's beautiful blond partner.

His mind began to race at high speeds at once on the problems and means of getting the broken fleet back into service for its giant task. Unless the United States regained control of the sea, even greater disaster loomed. Without victory at sea, tyranny soon would surely rule all Asia and Europe. In a matter of time it would surely rule the Americas. Captain Wallin salvaged most of the broken Pearl Harbor fleet that went on to figure prominently in the United States Navys victory. So the account he masterfully tells covers what he masterfully accomplished. The United States owes him an unpayable debt for this high service among many others in his long career.
