This manager of the House of Commons during the reigns of George I and George II, was Prime Minister to both these kings, and was elevated by the latter on 9 February, 1742, to the dignity of Earl of Orford, though he was better known by his previous title of Sir Robert until his death on 18 March, 1745. Sir Robert, a (5072 w'vamt and a wit, was in no sense a strict moralist. By his first wife, Catherine Shorter, the grand daughter of a Lord Mayor of London, he had, with a daughter Mary, Countess of Cholmondeley, three sons: Robert, second Earl of Oxford, Sir Edward Walpole, whose life and romance we shall deal with later on, and Horace Walpole, the antiquary and the writer not only of this work but of the admirable letters we all know so well, which give the key to so much Georgian history. By his second wife, Maria Skerrett, the Phryne of Pope, Sir Robert had one daughter, Lady Mary Churchill, born before marriage, but dowered by her father's influence at Court with the rank of an earl's daughter. Robert, second Earl of Oxford, son of Sir Robert, was married unhappily to a great heiress, Margaret Rolle, Lady Clinton, and (dying in 1751) by her had but one son, George, third Earl. He, however, died unmarried in 1791, and his only surviving uncle, Horace Walpole, the author of this work, succeeded as fourth Earl, and bore the title unwillingly until he also died unmarried 2 March, 1797, when the earldom became extinct, until revived in the junior branch of the Walpole family in 1806. EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION THE MARRIAGE OF THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF GLOUCESTER THE Last Journal of the Reign of George III now before us, consists, with a certain amount of invaluable comments on Parliamentary debates, foreign news, and Court gossip, in a great measure of a narrative by Horace Walpole con- cerning a point in the history of his own time both near and dear to him, namely, the account of the declaration of the marriage of his niece Maria Walpole, Countess Dowager Waldegrave, to H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester, the second brother of King George III. Though the story has often been told, it is advisable to tell again here how this marriage (a startling one from every point of view) came to be brought about, and this cannot be done in a more suitable manner than in the first introduction to these two volumes. In this way leaving the second introduction by Dr. Doran, which follows, to explain the inception, scope, and contents of the work.
