Book excerpt: FROM THE NATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JEWELED FIRE In the latest novel in Sharon Shinn’s Elemental Blessings series, a woman is confronted with the past she left behind—and an uncertain future... Leah Frothen has returned home to rebuild the life she’s avoided for years. But she can scarcely catch her breath before she is summoned to meet with the regent, Darien Serlast, the man who made her a spy. Leah is reluctant to take on a new assignment, but Darien has dangled the perfect lure to draw her in... Leah finds she enjoys the challenges of opening a shop catering to foreign visitors, especially since it affords her the opportunity to get to know Mally, the child she abandoned five years ago. Leah is simultaneously thrilled, terrified, hopeful, moved, and almost undone as she slowly attempts to become part of her daughter’s life. But when the regent asks her to spy on ambassadors from a visiting nation, she develops a dangerous friendship with a foreign woman and finds herself falling in love with a man from her past. Soon Leah learns that everyone—her regent, her lover, and even her daughter—have secrets that could save the nation, but might very well break her heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lands of Remgeldon For three years, Zandrax had been cooped up at Dakes. He had to see and hear what was going on. In that time, he heard Halvards army was about to fall upon Dakes. He would be discovered. When returning to Dakes, he set about preparing to take the ship out, planning to leave Adrianna at Dakes and leaving those twin brats behind. But she was an adept spy and learned of his preparation and wasnt about to be left behind. Zandrax also heard about the many dragons, nearly a thousand. They had only been breeding for eight years. He needed to go somewhere where there were no dragons. He had also heard that people were speculating about other lands all around them. There was the Isle of the Dragons. Why not other islands? When Dakes was taken by the army, they learned that Zandrax had taken a ship out of Dakes and was headed east. Now they had to find out where he went. The search was begun anew. This time Dragonriders led the way across the oceans to new lands. Not only was there a massive search for Zandrax underway but a massive exploration started. Search and exploration became one. Major leaders Thon and Holin Silver were in lands named Keloria and Eberlee; Bragan Pelingre and Sladan Silver went to the land they named Heartland; Waldon Graystone opened an island off his coast of Drude then went on to see if there was more land. Others took over exploration led by Kalan Silver, the First Dragon Lord. The hunt for Zandrax was begun.

Download or read book The Horizon written by Didier Maleuvre and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a horizon? A line where land meets sky? The end of the world or the beginning of perception? In this brilliant, engaging, and stimulating history, Didier Maleuvre journeys to the outer reaches of human experience and explores philosophy, religion, and art to understand our struggle and fascination with limits—of life, knowledge, existence, and death. Maleuvre sweeps us through a vast cultural landscape, enabling us to experience each stopping place as the cusp of a limitless journey, whether he is discussing the works of Picasso, Gothic architecture, Beethoven, or General Relativity. If, as Aristotle said, philosophy begins in wonder, then this remarkable book shows us how wonder—the urge to know beyond the conceivable—is itself the engine of culture.
Book Synopsis Unlike Any Land You Know by : James Vesely
Download or read book Unlike Any Land You Know written by James Vesely and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with General Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers," the men and planes of the 490th Bomb Squadron became famous as the "Burma Bridge Busters." From late 1942 to the end of the war, their incredible feats of low-level bombing and strafing of Japanese-held bridges, airfields, and troop facilities in occupied Burma hindered the Japanese advance in Asia, and provided critical air support for the allies fighting on the ground. The author's uncle, a radioman/waist gunner in the 490th, was killed on a mission in the waning days of the war. This book is both a search for his memory, and a tribute to the squadron in which he proudly served and sacrificed his life—the "Burma Bridge Busters." The author was born and raised in Chicago. In addition to writing and traveling, he is an avid fisherman, hunter, and scuba diver. He has published Seasons of Harvest, a three-volume historical novel, and is at work on a second novel titled Cumberland Road. This book is his first nonfiction work.
