Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to examine in detail the effects on agricultural land use of the L.D.C. and non-resident land ownership programs in P.E.I. The economic consequences for the farmer and the farm community in an era of rapid change are also considered. Finally, the influence that each program has exerted on the retention of prime recreation land and on the preservation of wildlife areas, as well as ecologically sensitive areas, is documented. These investigations have been accomplished through cartographic analyses and personal interviews with landowners, representatives of the Provincial Government, and members of the private sector serving the agricultural community"--page 4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this book presents a wide-ranging review of urban, regional, economic, and environmental planning in Canada. A comprehensive source of information on Canadian planning policies, it addresses the wide variations between Canadian provinces. While acknowledging similarities with programs and policies in the United States and Britain, the author documents the distinctively Canadian character of planning in Canada. Among the topics addressed in the book are: the agencies of planning; on the nature of urban plans; the instruments of planning; land policies; natural resources; regional planning at the federal level; regional planning and development in Ontario; regional planning in other provinces; environmental protection; planning and people; and reflections on the nature of planning in Canada. The author documents how governmental agencies handle problems of population growth, urban development, exploitation of natural resources, regional disparities, and many other issues that fall within the scope of urban and regional planning. But he goes beyond this to address matters of politics, law, economics, social organization. The book is pragmatic, eclectic, interpretive, and critical. It is a valuable contribution to international literature on planning in its political context.

Book Synopsis The Summer Trade by : Alan MacEachern

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism has been a central part of Prince Edward Island’s identity for more than a century. What began as a seasonal sideline in the nineteenth century evolved into an economic powerhouse that now attracts over 1.5 million visitors each year, employs one in ten Islanders, and is the province’s second leading industry. Spanning from the Victorian era to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Summer Trade presents the first comprehensive history of tourism in any Canadian province. Over time the Island has marketed a remarkably durable set of tourism tropes – seaside refuge from urban industrial angst, return to innocence, literary shrine to L.M. Montgomery, cradle of Confederation, garden of the Gulf. As private enterprise and the state sought to manage the industry, the Island’s own identity became caught up in the wish fulfillment of its summer visitors. The result has been a complicated, sometimes conflicted relationship between Islanders and tourism, between a warm welcome to visitors and resistance to the industry’s adverse effects on local culture. Lavishly illustrated with postcards, tourist guides, and memorabilia, The Summer Trade also presents a history of Prince Edward Island in cameo that tracks cultural, economic, political, and environmental developments and tensions. Across the strait, the Island beckons.

Book Synopsis The Impact of Exurbanite Settlement in Rural Areas by : James D. McRae
Download or read book The Impact of Exurbanite Settlement in Rural Areas written by James D. McRae and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The migration of urban people to urban-shadow areas in Canada represents a reversal of rural population trends. The impact of this resettlement can be both favourable and unfavourable. A resettlement of the eastern Ontario/western Quebec study area from 1972 to 1979 was mainly generated by exurbanites from Montreal and Ottawa. This resettlement has generally strengthened rural socio-economic infrastructures and maintained farmland in agricultural use. However, the demand for primarily subdivided properties is decreasing the availability and increasing the value of quality farmland. While farmers may turn to land rental, short-term agreements contribute to exploitation of the soil resource. The anticipation of higher land values could also contribute further to economic uncertainty and eventually to a lowering of agricultural productivity"--Abstract.
