Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets of the Old Testament Perhaps the most conspicuous gain of recent study of the Old Testament has been the re-discovery of the prophets. For centuries these were but honoured names, the bearers of certain golden words that shone out lustrous over the ages, while their own personalities remained in shadow. Now the prophets stand in the clear light of history, as the great, figures of the ancient Revelation, the men through whose word and influence the vision broadened towards the perfect day. But they are no mere historical figures. As poets, preachers, moralists, statesmen seers and reformers - heralds of the coming Kingdom - above all, as men of God, who knew His mind, and walked with Him in spirit and truth, they are abiding fountains of inspiration for those who seek after righteousness. Individual prophets have received brilliant exposition at the hands of English-speaking scholars. There is still room, however, for a comprehensive treatment of the subject, which allows the prophets to speak for themselves. The present volume seeks to fulfil this ideal, within necessary limits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. It demands no freedom of poetic license to characterize the duration of the World War as "a grand and awful time." There are those who see, on the battlefields of three continents, only a welter of blood, murder set to martial music, an abyssmal tragedy, a riot of destruction. There are others who see all this, and more. They lift their eyes, and through brief breaks in the storm-cloud that hovers over the sky of Christendom, see the stars. The Hebrew prophets in their time caught such glimpses of light in the heavens. They too lived in dark days. Civilization, as they knew it, seemed again and again upon the brink of hopeless ruin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets in Ancient Israel The Jew was a person of no political importance and of no social standing. He was almost as unpopular in the Roman world as he is in Eastern Europe to-day, though not equally persecuted. He inhabited a little strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Syrian desert, and for six centuries had only intermittently enjoyed an approximate national independence. He was to the fore in commerce then as now - he had little else to live for' besides his faith - but political influence was almost denied him, and political dominance was a dream which appeared even to those who dreamed it to demand a more amazing divine interference with humanity than the world had ever' witnessed. Yet Jesus was a Jew and not a Roman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets and Kings: Of the Old Testament That thoughts of this kind did not take much hold of Mr. Erskine, I knew. It often struck me that if he could have entered into them, he would have had greater influence over his Presbyterian countrymen; he would have understood better what their old Covenant signified; he would have been regarded less as a mere protestant against the exclu siveness of their Calvinism; his idea of God, as an Educator, would have quickened many conceptions of Him as a Ruler and a Judge which had become petrified in their minds. I was much possessed by this feeling when I first published this book. It has become deepened in me while I have considered, in reference to recent controversies about the Union of Church and State, the theories of a distinguished divine whom Mr. Erskine reverenced and loved for the geniality of his character and the warmth of his heart, whom Scotland regards as one that made her old theology in some degree palatable, or at least tolerable, to the philosophers and economists of this generation. The defence of Establishments which Dr. Chalmers put forth in his London Lectures between thirty and forty years ago, must have received many a useful cor rection, even a severe commentary, from the zeal and struggles of the writer' s latter years. These may have modified greatly the influence of it on his own country men. But for those to whom the Lectures were addressed, - for our parties in the South, - his apology had, and has still, many attractions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Post-Exilic Prophets IN a series of ten volumes, of which this is the first published, it is proposed to give an account of the Development of Religion in Israel from the Earliest T imes, down to the Time of Christ. The general plan of the series is to describe briefly the literature itself and its authorship, and to' bring out more fully the character Iof the ideas contained in it, and show their place in the development of the religion. To each author has been entrusted a definite group of books or portion of literature. While working in sympathy with the general plan, he will at the same time endeavour to make his book a fresh and inde pendent contribution to the knowledge of its subject. The list of the volumes and of the authors who have undertaken them is given on next page. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minor Prophets Hosea prophesied in the prospect of the breaking up of the kingdom of the ten tribes, and near the end of the house of Jehu. He is full of the thought of the ruin that was at hand; but he anticipates scenes of restoration and glory beyond it. As I may express it, the death and resurrection of Israel is contemplated by him, and announced under different figures, in a very abrupt and vivid style. At the opening of the book, the prophet is directed by the Lord to take to him a wife and children. And he might say of them, as Isaiah did of his two sons, "Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders." The first child is "Jezreel" - the sign of the doom, both of the house of Jehu, and of the house of Israel. The second child is "Lo-ruhamah" - the sign that God would withdraw His mercy from the house of Israel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
