Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Sacred Story Knowing that in a certain sense we were traveling for the benefit Of others, we constantly kept before our mind the necessity Of thoroughness, and Often climbed through ruins on foot under a burning sun, which we would not have done, but for the necessity of seeing what we have described. In many instances we give the present native name Of places. We do this for the benefit Of Bible students. The native name is given in italic, and, in most instances, either pre ceded or followed by the translation. Should this narrative fall into the hands of those who still have honest doubts about the truthfulness Of the Bible, we can but hope the many allusions we make, and incidents related illustrating the fulfillment of its predictions, will be helpful to them. Many a man says ifi could only be assured, I would believe. We assure all such, that time and again we were overwhelmed with the reality Of the Sacred Record. With this brief introduction, we invite the reader to the narrative itself, hoping God will bless you in the reading as he has us in the writing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lands of Sacred Story: Sketches of Travel and Personal Experiences Which Appeared in the Christian Union During 1908-1909 It is a pleasure to introduce a man one loves, to speak upon a theme of sacred interest. The very introduction gives one a sort of fellowship with the message that is borne to the people, and he feels a selfish joy in the good that is done. Such is the feeling of the writer of these lines as he speaks to the public of James T. Nichols and the new book, The Lands of Sacred Story. Mr. Nichols as editor of the Christian Union, has proven himself a writer of rare power. God has given him the ability to say much in little space. His editorials have taken rank as among the very best things that have been said for our people's distinctive work and in the advocacy of the gen eral advance movement of the religious world. Many of us have felt that his writings should have a far wider field than that afforded by a State paper, even if the latter be of exceptional value and of large circulation. But when this man of God turns to the narrative of his own travels in the land made sacred by the ministry of Jesus, he is at his best. Of reverent faith and discerning judgment, he enters so sympathetically into the narrative that one feels the story of the land even as he sees the land declare it. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they that do hunger and thirst after righteous ness for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Stories for Children There was once a great storm of rain that covered the earth with a flood; first the fields and valleys were covered, and then the high hills, and last of all the mountains. All the nations who have lived Since have some story of this flood. Even the savage tribes in far-away lands have their stories of how the earth was once covered with water. There is an old Chaldean story about a man who once built a vessel in which he was saved from drowning; and in the vessel with him were many different animals and birds. Another singular story is told of a battle between the sea and the earth. In this fight the sea wins the day, and the earth is covered by the water. There is also a Phrygian story of a man named Enos who foresaw that there was to come a great rain; and it is said that he wept and prayed for his people, because of the terrible flood that was coming upon them. A curious medal has been found that tells about this flood, and upon it is a picture of a square-shaped vessel This is floating upon the water, and has the picture of a man and woman standing within it. There are two birds in the picture; one of them is perched on top of the vessel and the other is flying toward it, with a branch in his mouth. From the Bible we have our story of the Flood, and it is one of the most interesting which we find in the sacred Book. Book excerpt: "Often through ordinary things and ordinary events we glimpse the divine." Living the Sacred Story tells of a seemingly ordinary journey that yielded extraordinary spiritual growth and understanding. From her arrival in Istanbul to her extended sojourn in the Old City of Jerusalem, Bonnie Glassford recounts scenes from an ancient landscape in which people of today live and work. From the perspective of the Ecce Homo Convent in Jerusalem, she encounters Christians, Jews and Muslims living their lives against the rich backdrop of the Holy Land. Living the Sacred Story follows the footsteps of Biblical figures. It combines travel, spirituality, humor, pathos, new insights, personal growth and Biblical reflection. Within an exotic landscape that is the cradle of western civilization, through encounter with the lands described in classical literature and the Bible, and through meeting the people who now live in those lands, the reader becomes aware of a rich inner landscape that we carry around with us. Ultimately the story arrives at the awareness that in the most ordinary events, and the lives of the most ordinary folk, we see the divine. This book speaks to the deep yearning and spiritual hunger of our time.

The Bible is a volume which everybody respects, which few people read, and which fewer study. I cherish the hope that some into whose hands this little book falls may be inspired by it to examine the Sacred Story to see whether these things be true or not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Tales of India About a year ago, the idea entered my mind of writing on our ceremonial lore which consists of an immense stock of curious legends transmitted from mouth to mouth for ages past. In the zenana of Bengal alone has the sacred fire of this knowledge been kept burning and, were it not for our wives, sisters, and daughters, it would long since have been extinguished. The ceremonies which I have mentioned are almost exclusively performed by women, and the sterner sex takes little or no part in them, as a rule not even knowing where or when they take place. The rites are simple and cost nothing. As to their origin, I can only hazard a guess; and it is that they have been invented at different times by Indian women of understanding above that of their contemporaries with a view to keeping their sex, which has often more time on its hands than it knows how to dispose of, from becoming idle and, therefore, vicious, that zeal for religion might be fostered, and women be enabled to exercise and develop their higher sensibilities which would otherwise languish. I have tried to preserve the pure outlines of the sacred record from the vivid description and the suggestive supposition that are sometimes introduced to add charm to the story, and in all quoted speech I have used the exact words of the author ized version of the Scriptures, so that the earliest impression made upon the memory of the child might be one that should remain.
