Book Synopsis Las Siete Partidas, Volume 5 by : Alfons X (rei de Castella-Lleó)
Download or read book Las Siete Partidas, Volume 5 written by Alfons X (rei de Castella-Lleó) and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Las Siete Partidas, or Seven Divisions, is the major law code of thirteenth-century Spain, compiled by Alfonso X the Learned of Castile. Seven centuries later, this compendium of legal and customary information remains the foundation of modern Spanish law. In addition, its influence is notable in the law of Spain's former colonies, including Texas, California, and Louisiana. The work's extraordinary scope offers unparalleled insight into the social, intellectual, and cultural history of medieval Spain. Built on the armature of a law code, it is in effect an encyclopedia of medieval life. Long out of print, the English translation of Las Siete Partidas—first commissioned in 1931 by the American Bar Association—returns in a superior new edition. Editor and distinguished medieval historian Robert I. Burns, S.J., provides critical historical material in a new general Introduction and extensive introductions to each Partida. Jerry Craddock of the University of California, Berkeley, provides updated bibliographical notes, and Joseph O'Callaghan of Fordham University contributes a section on law in Alfonso's time. Las Siete Partidas is presented in five volumes, each available separately: The Medieval Church, Volume 1: The World of Clerics and Laymen (Partida I) Medieval Government, Volume 2: The World of Kings and Warriors (Partida II) The Medieval World of Law, Volume 3: Lawyers and Their Work (Partida III) Family, Commerce, and the Sea, Volume 4: The Worlds of Women and Merchants (Partidas IV and V) Underworlds, Volume 5: The Dead, the Criminal, and the Marginalized (Partidas VI and VII)

Book excerpt: When Mary needs to pick a topic for her research project, she lands on investigating the rumor about the “Magic Mirror of Hallucinations,” a nightmarish object said to cause your own reflection to try to switch places with you. Naturally, Mary immediately stumbles upon the mirror and carelessly exposes herself to its effects—when nothing happens, she wonders whether it was just a rumor after all. Soon enough, however, it appears to her friends and classmates that she’s turned over a new leaf: where before she went to such great lengths to be demure and ladylike, she’s now wearing frilly miniskirts, referring to herself as “Platinum Heart SR,” and, most troublingly, claiming she’s neck-deep in a conflict with a shadowy cabal known only as “the organization.” Can Mary successfully unravel the organization’s intrigue before her academy life collapses? Or will she go down in the hearts and minds of her friends as the girl who failed to defeat the great evil haunting her?

Book Synopsis The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour, Volume 5 by : Louis L'Amour
Download or read book The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour, Volume 5 written by Louis L'Amour and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Louis L’Amour are built around the dramatic moments when men and women cast their fears, doubts, and pasts behind them and plunge into the unknown—into split-second decisions with life-and-death consequences. Nowhere is that more evident than in this quintessential collection of stories set on the American frontier. Here L’Amour takes us across a bold, beautifully rendered landscape where old scores haunt new lives, the wrong choice leaves unwitting victims, and strangers may come to trust—or kill—one another. Fugitives, visionaries, fortune seekers, drifters, and young women trying to build homes on a lawless frontier, the characters in these pulse-pounding stories are vintage L’Amour. Together in this vivid, rollicking collection, they bring to life the spirit of adventure and confirm Louis L’Amour’s place in the pantheon of American writers.
Book Synopsis Fictions of Western American Domesticity by : Amanda J. Zink
Download or read book Fictions of Western American Domesticity written by Amanda J. Zink and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a compelling explanation of something that has bedeviled a number of feminist scholars: Why did popular authors like Edna Ferber continue to write conventional fiction while living lives that were far from conventional? Amanda J. Zink argues that white writers like Ferber and Willa Cather avoided the subject of their own domestic labor by writing about the performance of domestic labor by “others,” showing that American print culture, both in novels and through advertisements, moved away from portraying women as angels in the house and instead sought to persuade other women to be angels in their houses. Zink further explores lesser-known works such as Mexican American cookbooks and essays in Indian boarding school magazines to show how women writers “dialoging domesticity” exemplify the cross-cultural encounters between “colonial domesticity” and “sovereign domesticity.” By situating these interpretations of literature within their historical contexts, Zink shows how these writers championed and challenged the ideology of domesticity.
