Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land Beyond Mexico This book is the record of a mule-back journey of nearly a thousand miles undertaken by an American archaeologist who wished to familiarize himself with some of the old Maya ruins of Central America. It aims at giving a picture of the land and people of Guatemala, San Salvador, and the northern border of Honduras, as they are known only to those who arc content to sleep in the Indian villages and ride the lonely upland trails of one of the loveliest and least known countries of the New World. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico, Old and New: A Wonder-Land If I am so fortunate as to enable the reader of the succeeding pages through mental vision to see things somewhat as I saw them, and to learn the fact, as I did, contrary to my expectation, that the best blood of Mexico at the present time runs in Indian veins, not Castilian. which has come down from the Aztecs, Toltecs, and, perchance, from Egypt and Chaldaea, I shall be glad and amply remunerated. Previous to my recent wanderings and experience in the new Republic, I had been led to think and fully believe from what I had read and heard that the hope and salvation of Mexico was in the hands of those who looked back to Spain as their mother-country; but I found the actual to be far otherwise. The talent and promise are confined almost exclusively to the so-called Indians. The term Indian has been misleading to our northern people, causing them to judge the natives there to be somewhat similar to the Blackfoot, or Pequoid of Oregon, yet far more degraded. From the advent of Cortez into the country they have been pictured by the Spaniards as a most barbarous and degraded race, pests and burdens to the land. They were made slaves by the Spanish lords, and by their endurance and fortitude they have proved themselves of noble extraction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Benighted Mexico Incomparable in its spectacular picturesque ness is sun-kissed Mexico, and it would have been a pleasant task to brighten these pages with stories of atmospheric romance and its vari coloured beauties. But there are none to-day. It is a land of sufiering, intrigue, infamy, crime and vice almost beyond human belief and the end is not yet. A titanic struggle is at hand, but the ways and means for the redemption of the nation are not in the perspective. Fate and the United States of America seem to have carved a skull and crossbones on its destinies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aztec Land Having resolved to visit Mexico, the question first to be considered was how to do so in the most advantageous manner. Repairing to the office of Messrs. Raymond Whitcomb, in Boston, after a brief consultation with those experienced organizers of travel, the author handed the firm a check for the cost of a round trip to Mexico and back. On the following day he took his seat in a Pullman parlor car in Boston, to occupy the same section until his return from an excursion of ten thousand miles. A select party of ladies and gentlemen came together at the same time in the Fitchburg railroad station, most of whom were strangers to each other, but who were united by the same purpose. The traveler lives, eats, and sleeps in the vestibule train, while en route, in which he first embarks, until his return to the starting-point, a dining-car, with reading and writing rooms, also forming a part of the train. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montezuma and the Conquest of Mexico Whiie in the eastern hemisphere, he who imagined the possibility of reaching land beyond the mysterious atlantic, was deemed but a vis ionary dreamer, civilization had flourished, fallen and sprung up again in the western world. AI ready the wonderful ruins of an ancient American civilization had been overgrown by old forests, and the builders of them were forgotten by the people of Montezuma's day. While Columbus, ignorant of the extent of the globe, and of the great continent which lay between him and Asia, believed that he had but discovered a passage to the East Indies, more than one American monarch was extending and consolidating a king dom which bade fair to last for ages. The gentle savages of the West Indian Archipelago were soon subjugated by the Spanish sword and were easily ground by cruel Spanishavarice, but the great Gulf of Mexico hid for a time the mainland from the settlements upon the Islands. The Mexican question, like the Irish and American question, is first economic and, per accidens, religious and racial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of the Montezumas Months of delightful travel have at length landed our indomitable party at the borderland of the ancient realm of the Montezumas, and promise to bring us to the realization of our desire to visit a foreign land - a land far more foreign, indeed, to our Anglo-Saxon ideas and customs than any of the cultured countries of civilized Europe, and as different as the holy cities of Palestine, or as Egypt under the Ptolemies. En route we lingered long in the beautiful city of Denver, that gate-way to the marvelous mountain scenery of our American Alps, looking, as it does, on one side across the vast prairies stretching out for hundreds of miles between it and its sister cities of the East, and on the other to the rising foot-hills and proud peaks of the Rockies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land of Tomorrow: A Study in the Development of Mexico With such a foundation laid, is it any wonder that the builders of the Mexican nation have had a difficult task? We sometimes think that our noble Washington struggled against great odds in the achievement. Of American independence. His task was not a tithe so difficult as that'heroicly begun by Hidalgo and after so many years of struggle completed by the inflexible Juarez. The American colonies had always enjoyed a large measure of liberty. Their citizens were self-reliant, vigorous, ready to act. Even the clergy were in sympathy with the revolution. Men Iof' wealth like Robert Morris lent their aid and great statesmen that were the wonder and admiration of Europe represented our cause abroad and guided affairs at home. France was our ally, and we had a navy'that was no mean factor throughout the struggle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico and the Mexicans: Or Notes of Travel in the Winter and Spring Not less fascinating was his description of the gorgeous hues of the flowers, the splendid coloring of the butterflies, and the brilliant plumage of the birds all of which seemed like pictures of fairy-land. Nor have I forgotten the testimony which he bore to the high courtesy with which he was everywhere received and treated, in social, as well as in official circles. Now that the bonds of friendship and alli ance between our own country and our sister Republic are about to be drawn so much closer; now that a new, auspicious, and even brilliant era is about to dawn upon the Land of the Aztecs, I made up my mind, in the month of January last, to see Mexico with my own eyes.
