Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knowledge of God and Other Sermons "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent." St. John xvii. 3. So spake the Master we follow in His great prayer the night before He died on the Cross; and the Church has taken His words into one of her daily collects, speaking of God, "in knowledge of whom" (that is, of course, "in the knowing of whom") "standeth our eternal life"; as well as into the Collect for St. Philip and St. James's Day - "whom truly to know is everlasting life." But men say, 'We cannot know God: we do not deny the existence of God; but we affirm that, if there be a God, He is unknowable.' Now let me at once allow that there is a great truth underlying this agnosticism. There generally is a truth at the root of all error; for error is mostly partial or one-sided truth, erring in its ignoring of other truth. It is true, then, that a finite being like man cannot know, with any complete or commensurate knowledge, an infinite Being like God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Things of God Sermons Its newness lies in the fact, not only that we are living in an age of new thought, but that growing experience is ever leading Christians to new views of God and His love which are invariably accompanied by something of new ness in the understanding of God's Word. In this way we are getting our new conception of Christ. As the sermons have not been unattended with evidence of blessing to some who heard them, it is my earnest hope that there may be blessing in them also for some who may read. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... Compare here 1 Kings x. 5: the Sitt1ng of his (Solomon's) servants. To be saved by Christ Jesus, to believe in Christ Jesus, is much; but to be in Christ Jesus--what can it mean? Surely it is the expression of the greatest nearness to God of which language is capable! The whole sentence, perhaps, may be paraphrased: Placed in a condition of perfect rest, safety, and enjoyment, so near God as to know Him, not as His far-off subjects may, but as the sons of His house, the members of His family. The man who is in this position and knows it, is a delightful person to meet; he is pleasant in manner, he is not tired or hurried or depressed or murmuring. He is seated at home in his own sphere and enjoying it. Hence, with every want supplied, in touch with all-love and all-wisdom, he is naturally utterly unselfish (no praise to him), and is full of strength and courage to fight the good fight, to finish his course, and to keep the faith the warfare, the walk, the witness of the Christian man (2 Tim. iv. 7). But the secret of it all, the source of his strength and untiring zeal, is found in his being seated together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. No murmur is ever heard here, SSnnursin heavenly no doubts are possible here--no dis-p'aces-cords of earth's purblind reasonings. The eye is opened, and the ears; and, the tongue has learned to speak the language of Heaven, so that it calls bitter, sweet; and pain, joy; and all ill, good, --so it be His sweet will. Such, then, is the twofold life of God's child. child, at home now with God in Christ in Heavenly Places, in perfect happiness while fighting the battles of the Lord, or standing at His door and waiting, or treading a lonely path across a wilderness just as it pleases Him. So far we..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of God in Christ and Other Sermons: Preached at St. John's Church, Stamford, Connecticut In the New Testament He reveals Himself through the Incarnation of the Word - as the spoken word expresses the inward thought, so the Word of God reveals God. In these last days He hath spoken unto us by His Son - a revelation perfect to our present understanding, and which grows fuller as we can more fully take it in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith and Knowledge: Sermons Written with a view to publication. To claim that there is complete uniformity of thought between the earliest and the latest, would be to confess that the writer had learned nothing between the ages_ of thirty and forty. There are a few sentences in the earlier sermons which he would now express somewhat differ ently; but he has thought it better not to alter any discourse from the form in which it was actually delivered. This principle has also compelled him to allow certain quotations to appear twice or even three times in the volume. He hopes, however, that sufficient variety of subject and treatment will be found in it to prevent these small repetitions from being tiresome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of the Divine Silence: And Other Sermons The Scriptures would have been more minute and explicit in their teaching upon this subject if it were not in the nature of things beyond our comprehension. Our introduction into the real knowledge of celestial society cannot take place until we are changed. It would be scarcely less possible for the irrational to come into affinity of knowledge and sympathy with the rational than for the rational to come into affinity of know ledge and sympathy with the celestial and the divine, without this change concerning which we are assured. We shall' have a nature that will enable us to feel at home in heaven, that will enable us to associate with angels and with God without consciousness of shrinking or of shame. The knowledge of God is not to be earned by sacrificing reason to feeling, or feeling to reason, by ascetic observance or by orthodox belief: it is given freely to all that purify themselves with all the force of heart, and soul, and mind. Further, the only power that can bring feeling, thought, and will into harmonious action is the personal influence of Christ - which St. Paul sums up in faith. From that personal influence all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed, though the doers be those who never heard His name; and to its transfiguring power, if it be rightly received, no limit can be set even in this life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love and Wisdom of God: Being a Collection of Sermons Cuddesdon days, a sermon to Men only, a Missionary sermon at St. Paul's, a School sermon, two Memorial ser mons, Addresses given at a Quiet Day for Bishops during the Lambeth Conference of 1897, a paper on clerical study, and a sermon preached at the Festival of Lincoln Theological College in 1888. It is always a very different thing to read a sermon and to hear one. This is specially true in the case of a preacher like the late Bishop of Lincoln. His gracious and inspiring presence, his appealing voice, his intensely sympathetic in tonation, cannot be produced on the printed page, and much, very much, is consequently lost. Those who knew him best will agree that it seemed comparatively to matter very little what he said it was his presence and his way of saying what he had to say which seemed all-important the magnetic attraction of his presence was in itself more than half the sermon. It follows, therefore, that a'volume of his printed sermons can only suggest in a very attenuated way the real effect of the preacher. It was, however, thought worth while that his method of preaching and teaching should not be altogether lost to a younger generation, and the only way of securing this (with whatever inevitable drawbacks) was to publish a volume like the present. They will at least show that the Bishop's mind was continually at work as well as his heart; he was a real thinker, and used to take great pains in preparing his ser mons, sometimes beginning them quite early in the morn ing between four and five o'clock While he was still in bed. In earlier years he wrote but little, and preached gener ally from notes but latterly, as he found his memory less reliable, and to avoid the strain of speaking extempore, his practice was to write almost everything. Why did the Vision come to Jacob near Luz, and not somewhere else? Was the place particularly sacred? Had God promised to appear there more fully than He would elsewhere? No; for Jacob was there by the mere chance of travel, and Luz was a city of Phil 1stines who presumably did not worship the God of Abraham. Why was this the very gate of Heaven? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Seen and Unseen AT this season we are particularly called upon to consider that great Union of the Seen and Unseen, the mystery of the Holy Incarnation, by which is understood the first coming of Christ in the flesh. This doctrine, we may be assured, lies at the foundation of the Christian religion; and must therefore be a matter concerning which it is of the greatest consequence to us all to have a sound knowledge and a right faith.
