Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knights of St. Crispin, 1867-1874: A Study in the Industrial Causes of Trade Unionism Massachusetts' Crispins alone claimed that many}6 The New York Tribune declared in May 1869 that there were then eighteen thousand Crispins in and around New York and fifty thousand in the United States}7 The organization's records show that about four hundred lodges were established, many of which had over six hundred members}8 and some over a thou sand. Unity Lodge of Lynn had over twelve hundred19 and a Philadelphia lodge over fifteen hundred members. This would indicate that Foster's estimate was a little too low. Even if the maximum number of active lodges never exceeded two hundred and fifty and their membership averaged only two hun dred the enrollment would have been fifty thousand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the ideological conflicts and practical experiences of late-nineteenth-century American workers who pursued "cooperation" as an alternative to "competitive" capitalism. Between 1865 and 1890, in the aftermath of the Civil War, virtually every important American labor reform organization advocated "cooperation" over "competitive" capitalism and several thousand cooperatives opened for business during this era. The men and women who built cooperatives were practical reformers and they established businesses to stabilize their work lives, families, and communities. Yet they were also utopians--envisioning a world free from conflict where workers would receive the full value of their labor and freely exercise democratic citizenship in the political and economic realms. Their visions of cooperation, though, were riddled with hierarchical notions of race, gender, and skill that gave little specific guidance for running a cooperative. The Practical Utopians closely examines the experiences of working men and women as they built their cooperatives, contested the meanings of cooperation, and reconciled the realities of the marketplace with their various and often conflicting conceptions of democratic participation. Steve Leikin provides new theories and examples of the failure and successes of the cooperative movement, including how the Gilded Age's most powerful labor organization, the Knights of Labor, collapsed in the face of the expanding industrial economy. Dealing with a critically important yet largely ignored aspect of working-class life during the late nineteenth century, The Practical Utopians brings crucial aspects of the cooperative movement to light and is a necessary study for all scholars of history, labor history, and political science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the History of Wisconsin series introduces us to the first generation of statehood, from the conversion of prairie and forests into farmland to the development of cities and industry. In addition, this volume presents a synthesis of the Civil War and Reconstruction era in Wisconsin. Scarcely a decade after entering the Union, the state was plunged into the nationwide debate over slavery, the secession crisis, and a war in which 11,000 "Badger Boys in Blue" gave their lives. Wisconsin's role in the Civil War is chronicled, along with the post-war years. Complete with photographs from the Historical Society's collections, as well as many pertinent maps, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in this era of Wisconsin's history.

He not only revisits this urban conglomeration, but also seeks out previously unheard groups such as women and blacks. The result is a more rounded portrait of a small eastern city on the verge of becoming modern.

First published in 1980, The Labour Companion remains a valuable reference for students of labour's role in Canadian history.
