Book excerpt: The Kids’ Karate Workbook is an engaging workbook meant to be used at home by young people who want to supplement their regular Karate or Taekwondo training. Drawing on the author’s more than 20 years of experience teaching martial arts to children, the book offers a step-by-step curriculum that traces a typical journey from first-day beginner to intermediate-level student. Along the way, kids learn about uniforms and etiquette; practice the most frequently used strikes, kicks, blocks, and forms; and unlock the basics of martial arts physics. The curriculum is highly interactive, inviting readers to answer questions and solve puzzles. It also highlights common mistakes to avoid, answers frequently asked questions, and points the way to a deeper understanding of martial arts. The easy-to-follow text is accompanied by 150 illustrations depicting the author’s own students—real kids who are also serious martial artists. While written for youngsters, the book is equally useful for parents who want to assist in practicing at home, as well as instructors who teach children.

But the story is enjoyable for readers of all ages. The legends of Karate-Do are brought to life in its beautifully descriptive stories that tell of the heroics and steely determination that embody karate history. The peaceful philosophies behind this multi-layered martial art are too often overlooked, while its graphic fighting forms more often take center stage. Karate is explained simply, so children may gain a greater understanding of the true meaning and nature of Karate-Do"--Page 4 of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in a comprehensive overview of the philosophical and spiritual foundations that underlie karate, The Art of Killing emphasizes its original purpose: to kill an attacker swiftly and brutally. Prior to 1900, karate-dō was exclusively an art of unarmed self-defense. Its practice was designed for life-or-death situations--effectively, an art of killing. Here, authors Leonard Pellman and the late Masayuki Shimabukuro restore karate to its original intent. They move karate away from its popular modern-day sporting applications back to its deadly origins---and to the restraining philosophy of peace, self-sacrifice, compassion, and service to others that necessarily accompanied it. With chapters on kokoro (heart, mind, and spirit), ki (spirit and energy), and the seven major precepts of bushidō, The Art of Killing shows readers that the lethal art of karate is more than a method of bringing an enemy down--it’s a philosophical and spiritual system grounded in essential lessons to guard against abuses of power. This book does not contain detailed instruction in killing methods, but it does showcase the deadly power of karate--and explain why purity of intentions matters, and how compassion and respect are the essence of karate training. Readers will learn: The purpose and meaning of karate-dō The origins and major precepts of bushidō Training methods, preparation, and etiquette Fundamentals, spiritual power, training patterns, and analysis and application of kata About the body as a weapon

Book excerpt: This is a karate book aimed specifically at children. It is all too easy to permanently damage a young person's body by trying to make him or her train in the same way as an adult. This book, aimed at the 10-14 year age group, shows how children can train and learn safely and successfully, on their own terms and at their own speed. As well as covering all the moves, blocks, kicks and punches, the book answers questions about the history and traditions of karate, the grading system, what to wear and diet. Aspects of the sport such as self-defence, sportsmanship and the control of fear are included, as well as advice on rules and competitions. This book should help every junior karate fan to form good and lasting habits to take him into adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As choir directors, we are constantly challenged to find ways to balance fun with music performance and theory. We want our students to be successful and enjoy their musical experience with us. Assessment is an essential part of what we do. We need to be able to see what our students really understand and we don't want to leave anything out. What if your students were so excited to show you what they know that they came to you and asked for tests? I created this program for my students because they used to get nervous when it was time to test. Sight-reading tests were particularly stressful. I was in Karate at the time, and I noticed how the karate students were always excited to test. The tests were short, and there was a reward for success. I decided to start making a game out of testing for my choir students. Now, my students ask me for tests! They are going online and looking at the concepts before I teach them in class, and they are having fun learning. They are excited to show me what they can do and their musicianship has reached a new level! My students are taking ownership of their progress and becoming independent musicians. How the program works... The concepts for Middle School Singers are divided into seven sections, with levels for first through third year middle school singers. The tests get more challenging as the students progress through the program. The Yellow Belt level is designed for quick success, and the higher Belt Levels are designed to be completed within a six-week time period. The program contains a study guide for each level, as well as a student tracking form for each year in choir, written theory tests, and oral sight-reading and rhythm-reading tests. There are printable certificates at the end of the book for each level, and a printable reward pass (but you can always make your own reward system). With my students, I also create a sticker chart so that my singers can view their successes and get a visual idea of what they still need to accomplish. I can also look at the chart to see what individual classes need at a glance when I am planning for the next week. This program would be a great tool for district alignment and common assessments. You can rest assured that you are covering concepts that your students need to know before they move on to high school.
