Excerpt: ...just gold enough on his bright green wings to distinguish him from the glossy leaves of the Cape Jasmine, which grew close by the balustrade, was balancing himself upon one of the rich white blossoms that filled the whole air with their fragrance; while a gay-plumaged bird, with a strange sort of a feathery coronal upon his head, was making himself busy among the rank grass beyond. Still farther on, a longnecked chamelion clung to the trunk of a guava tree, throwing back his snake-like head, and darting his inquisitive little eyes about very suspiciously; a green-coated robber of a parrot nestled among the fruit and foliage above; and below, and all around, a whole school of crows flapped their black wings, and wheeled, and fluttered, and cawed, with amazing industry and volubility. It is in vain to try to enumerate the lady's strange visitors, but they were such as any of you might see of a bright morning in Burmah, and very attractive you would find them--much more attractive, I have no doubt, than the long palm-leaf books, all smeared with oil, to make their circular scratches legible. From a little bamboo shelter--a curious thatched roof set upon poles, just beyond the high, uncropped hedge, and dignified by the name of schoolhouse--came a sound of mingled voices, very cheerful, very earnest, and, to stranger ears, about as intelligible as the cawing of the crows. But the lady understood it all; and it told her that her native schoolmaster was doing his duty, and his tawny pupils making some proficiency in the them-bong gyee, or a-b, ab talk. Kah gyee yd, ka--kah gyee yd kya, kah--kah gyee yd long gyee ten, ke--kah gyee yd long gyee ten san cat, kee, came the confused sounds--a very circuitous way of saying k-a, ka--k-e, ke, --4 Don't...

Book Synopsis Perishing Heathens by : Julius H. Rubin
Download or read book Perishing Heathens written by Julius H. Rubin and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Perishing Heathens Julius H. Rubin tells the stories of missionary men and women who between 1800 and 1830 responded to the call to save Native peoples through missions, especially the Osages in the Arkansas Territory, Cherokees in Tennessee and Georgia, and Ojibwe peoples in the Michigan Territory. Rubin also recounts the lives of Native converts, many of whom were from mixed-blood métis families and were attracted to the benefits of education, literacy, and conversion. During the Second Great Awakening, Protestant denominations embraced a complex set of values, ideas, and institutions known as “the missionary spirit.” These missionaries fervently believed they would build the kingdom of God in America by converting Native Americans in the Trans-Appalachian and Trans-Mississippi West. Perishing Heathens explores the theology and institutions that characterized the missionary spirit and the early missions such as the Union Mission to the Osages, and the Brainerd Mission to the Cherokees, and the Moravian Springplace Mission to the Cherokees. Through a magnificent array of primary sources, Perishing Heathens reconstructs the millennial ideals of fervent true believers as they confronted a host of impediments to success: endemic malaria and infectious illness, Native resistance to the gospel message, and intertribal warfare in the context of the removal of eastern tribes to the Indian frontier.
