Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how a group of young people make decisions about drug taking. It charts the decision making process of recreational drug takers and non-drug takers as they mature from adolescence into young adulthood. With a focus upon their perceptions of different drugs, it situates their decision making within the context of their everyday lives. Changing lives, changing drug journeys presents qualitative longitudinal data collected from interviewees at age 17, 22 and 28 and tracks the onset of drug journeys, their persistence, change and desistance. The drug journeys and the decision making process which underpins them are analysed by drawing upon contemporary discourses of risk and life course criminology. In doing so, a new theoretical framework is developed to help us understand drug taking decision making in contemporary society. This framework highlights the pleasures and risks that interviewees perceive when making decisions whether or not to take drugs. The ways in which their drug journeys and life journeys intersect and how social relationships and transitions to adulthood facilitate or constrain the decision making process are also explored. Qualitative longitudinal research of this kind is uncommon yet it provides an invaluable insight into the decision making process of individuals during the life course. The book will, therefore, be of interest to researchers and students from a variety of disciplines including qualitative research methods as well as sociology, criminology, cultural and health studies. It will also be an important resource for professionals working in health promotion, drugs education, harm reduction and treatment.

But his journey of vengeance takes an unexpected turn when he foils a highwayman's attempted robbery and ends up learning the lucrative practice of thief-taking - capturing and turning in criminals for reward money. As Peter continues the search for his father's killers, he and his partner, George Ludlow, realize their not-so-legitimate business venture is as dangerous as it is profitable. As they attempt to foil the criminal plans of notorious Thief-Taker General Jonathan Wild, Peter and George suddenly find themselves targets in an elaborate scheme crafted by the very mastermind behind Peter's father's death. Steinberg has written numerous health-related publications and was lead author on Government, Ethics, and Managers, A Guide to Solving Ethical Dilemmas in the Public Sector. He taught personal and community health at Brooklyn and Queens Colleges in New York City and Southern Illinois University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is from the musings in my personal reflective blog , A Gift From The Journey. In my musings it is my hope that the reader might find one aspect of my musings helpful in their lives. In life we can feel that we are alone in our experiences. It is my experience that there is always someone else that my have had a similar journey. The sense of isolation is lifted when we know that we are not the only one on any given path. In my musings I am often struck by how many similar themes that have happened in my life. Others have also shared some of those experiences/themes. I am grateful for the many paths on my journey and I hope that you will enjoy accompanying me on my journey. I have received many gifts in my life. There have been many individuals who have touched my spirit and in that moment my life was changed. In my life the bridge builders that I have known are responsible for much of my success. Without them I would have been blind when a new path opened. I have a personal belief that whether we have a positive moment in life or a negative moment in life that each moment becomes our teacher. It is in the transcending of these moments that our greatest gift of wisdom becomes our blessing. I hope that you enjoy this journey with me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among a growing number of ethnographies of eastern Indonesia that deal with cosmology, exchange, and kinship, From a Shattered Sun is the first to address squarely issues originally broached by Edmund Leach and Claude Lévi-Strauss concerning the relation between hierarchy and equality in asymmetric systems of marriage. On the basis of extensive fieldwork in the Tamimbar islands, Susan McKinnon analyzes the simultaneous presence of both closed, asymmetric cycles and open, asymmetric pathways of alliance--of both egalitarian and hierarchical configurations. In addition, Tamimbarese society is marked by the existence of multiple, differentially valued forms of marriage, affiliation, and residence. Rather than seeing these various forms as analytically separable types, McKinnon demonstrates that it is only by viewing them as integrally related--in terms of culturally specific understandings of "houses," gender, and exchange--that one can perceive the processes through which hierarchy and equality are created.
