The first botanical classification of the plant was made in 1753, by the Swedish botanist Carl Von Linneo, who classified and described the plant as “Cannabis Sativa L”. Since then, research has not stopped; including nowadays great advances in the heath’s area, with novel and controlled clinical trials, presentations and new applications for the relief of some pathologies or associated symptoms, where traditional drugs have failed. Evidence of that is in 1964, Raphael Mechoulam, in the Weizmann Institute of Sciences in Israel, found that Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is the main psychoactive compound present in cannabis, and since then, a great amount of information about the benefits of the identified molecules of this plant has been obtained. Cannabis is currently submitted in an extensive regulation process that includes taking decisions about the risk/benefit balance, many countries have considered cannabis as a possible treatment for fighting and/or stopping certain pathological mechanisms of diseases and/or as a contributor in improving the efficiency and safety of other drugs.
