Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reveals the hitherto unrepresented relationship that developed between Scotland and Sweden during the second half of the sixteenth and first half of the seventeenth centuries. Sweden's emergence as an independent Nordic, and indeed European, power required continual military and economic growth, which in turn necessitated a constant supply of manpower. The initially piecemeal migration of private individuals from Scotland bringing both martial and mercantile skills to Sweden gradually grew into an informal alliance, albeit officially sanctioned by the Swedes, based on personal networks. Equally the impact of Sweden's support for the Scottish Covenanting movement on British state-formation is scrutinized. This fresh perspective on Scottish-Swedish connections is aimed at those interested in state-formation, migration studies, diplomatic developments, and military history.

Book excerpt: This volume examines the impact of military activity upon Scotland's national identity as the country underwent a fundamental transition through domestic centralisation at the turn of the seventeenth century, integration into the United Kingdom in 1707, and as a partner in Britain's global empire during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is divided into three thematic sections that examine the evolution of Scottish military identity over the early modern period, how the Highland region moved from a relationship of hostility to the Lowland political authorities to the central element in eighteenth and ninteenth century Scottish soldiering, and, finally, how aspects of Scotland's civilian society interrelated with her soldiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In neglecting maritime and naval matters, students of the reign of Charles I have missed or misunderstood important elements in the sickness of the early Stuart polity. The crisis of the monarchy at that time was bound up with the failure of the nation's sea forces in the wars of the 1620s and with Charles's efforts to reform and strengthen the navy by means of ship money. The studies of the shipping industry, shipowning, mutiny and one particular seaman's experience in the transatlantic servant's trade explore the economic and social aspects of seafaring, especially the relations between owners, masters, and men at a time of rapid growth and change in the merchant marine. But the relations between the merchant marine and the Royal Navy were so close that the two should be studied together. The essays on Sir Kenelm Digby's privateering venture in the Mediterranean, on ship money (the longest and most central), on the expedition against the Salle rovers, and on the Parliamentary Navy demonstrate in different ways how naval policy, naval finance, and naval enterprise were linked with the problems and the interests of the private sector, which actually took over the Navy in 1642, with not altogether savory results. This novel juxtaposition of topics will, it is hoped, stimulate new thinking about Caroline society and politics.--Book jacket.

Book excerpt: This is a new edition of Geoffrey Parker's much-admired illustrated account of how the West, so small and so deficient in natural resources in 1500, had by 1800 come to control over one-third of the world. Parker argues that the rapid development of military practice in the West constituted a 'military revolution' which gave Westerners an insurmountable advantage over the peoples of other continents. This edition incorporates new material, including a substantial 'Afterword' which summarises the debate which developed after the book's first publication.

This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the English Civil War broke out, London’s economy was diverse and dynamic, closely connected through commercial networks with the rest of England and with Europe, Asia and North America. As such it was uniquely vulnerable to hostile acts by supporters of the king, both those at large in the country and those within the capital. Yet despite numerous difficulties, the capital remained the economic powerhouse of the nation and was arguably the single most important element in Parliament’s eventual victory. For London’s wealth enabled Parliament to take up arms in 1642 and sustained it through the difficult first year and a half of the war, without which Parliament’s ultimate victory would not have been possible. In this book the various sectors of London’s economy are examined and compared, as the war progressed. It also looks closely at the impact of war on the major pillars of the London economy, namely London’s role in external and internal trade, and manufacturing in London. The impact of the increasing burden of taxation on the capital is another key area that is studied and which yields surprising conclusions. The Civil War caused a major economic crisis in the capital, not only because of the interrelationship between its economy and that of the rest of England, but also because of its function as the hub of the social and economic networks of the kingdom and of the rest of the world. The crisis was managed, however, and one of the strengths of this study is its revelation of the means by which the city’s government sought to understand and ameliorate the unique economic circumstances which afflicted it.
